Problem set is the synonym used for standard question-and-answer type homework at Columbia. It usually refers to science or engineering homework, since most humanities homework revolves around papers. However, the term is also used by the "harder" "soft sciences" like economics.
Some humanities students reel in horror from mere mention of the term.
