Talk:David "Buddha" Meyer

Foobar, do you think you could get some sources on this stuff? I sort of get the feeling this is all fictional for an inside joke by the Ultimate team. David Meyers doesn't come up in the Spec, which I'd imagine he should if he was the founder of CU Ultimate. He also doesn't come up on Google in any connection with Ultimate. --Nonsensical 15:29, 6 July 2007 (EDT)

Re. sources: I agree. I didn't write this article, just cleaned it up from a posting by Skanelaw (his or her only contribution).
Re. Meyers: I think this happened in the 1970s, is spec searching reliable 30 years back? Foobar 16:13, 6 July 2007 (EDT)
Oh yeah, you're right. Looks like Spec archives didn't really start until 2000/2001. But yeah, still we should mark this article for cleanup. Is there a template for that? --Nonsensical 16:21, 6 July 2007 (EDT)
I looked for such a template yesterday (for just these articles) but didn't see one. It'd be great if some other ultimate people could be encouraged to clean it up, since we can't contact Skanelaw Foobar 16:51, 6 July 2007 (EDT)

Buddha is a legend--not fiction

I played with Buddha, but I have only sketchy info for background.

Dave Meyer: Columbia HS (NJ)--1973/ Columbia College--1977 One of original HS Ultimate players from NJ...with Bob Evans (Princeton). Suffered stroke/aneurysm while at Georgetown Law on September 29, 1978 and never recovered. Died August 13,1983.

Skanelaw and a group of ~20 players (and families) get together for a reunion game each Sept (Sat after Labor Day). The Ultimate skills have deteriorated but the camaraderie and stories haven't.

Chronology clarification

How could jerry M have played in an ultimate game in 1978 if he got his BA in 1989? see http://www.whoi.edu/profile.do?id=jmcmanus Foobar 20:30, 7 July 2007 (EDT)

Verifying existence

Apropos to this discussion: one good way to validate the existence of CC or SEAS students who were here during most of the 20th century is to run a search in the directory of the Alumni E-Community (see https://alumni.college.columbia.edu/ecom/ ) for those who are eligible to do so. There was no David Meyers listed there when I checked. So I ran a google search for "david buddha meyers" and found this discussion: http://www.ultimatehistory.com/founders/Pg/buddha.html . The name referenced is "David L. Meyer". Searching on the e-community again, I did find a David Meyer, CC'77. Pacman 17:41, 8 July 2007 (EDT)

cool! and thanks for tracking him down. maybe there should be a template for that sort of search --- for alumni --- in the same way there are searches for the entries in the directory of current students? Foobar 18:19, 8 July 2007 (EDT)

jerryM

jerryM (like a bunch of us from that era--freshmen in the fall '74) ended up on an extended plan. It was just too difficult to leave the nest. We will have to get PaulTV to upload some of the rosters.

wow --- there were multiple people who entered in 1974 but didn't finish for a decade or more? sorry for being dense/too young+ignorant of history but what was up? Foobar 00:20, 10 July 2007 (EDT)

The key was to be in a department with research money and you could stay on as a graduate research ass't. As long as you helped professors publish and get citations, visibility in conferences, etc. they would never want you to leave the land of Oz.
