Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) was a famous aviatrix who achieved rabid celebrity status during the 1920s and 30s. Her shy charisma, her persistence and independence, and her outstanding airborne achievements combined to make her a lasting symbol of feminism through the 20th Century. Among her achievements is being the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean solo. She mysteriously disappeared somewhere over Oceania during her circumnavigation attempt in 1937. Earhart attended the Medical School for a year (1919), but quit in order to pursue her aviation career.
