Columbia University is us. It was founded as King's College in 1754. King's College was renamed Columbia College after the American Revolution - a decidedly patriotic name. When Columbia began expanding in the mid-nineteenth century, the institution was still "Columbia College", while the undergraduate division became the "School of Letters and Science" and then the "School of Arts", joining the School of Law, the School of Mines, etc. In 1896 the Trustees voted to rename the institution "Columbia University" and return the undergraduate division to its original name, "Columbia College."

In 1954, the Associated Press noted that Columbia was the nation's "most complexly organized university."[1]
