Joseph A. Greenaway
Joseph A. Greenaway, Jr. CC '78 is a judge sitting on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. He was recently nominated by President Barack Obama to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, which covers Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Greenaway was born in London to West Indian parents and migrated with them to the U.S. at age two. After earning his BA in history at Columbia he went on to Harvard Law. He worked stints in private practice and in the New Jersey U.S. Attorney's office, then worked in the corporate world and did teaching stints at Rutgers and Cardozo Law Schools before being nominated to the New Jersey District Court. He has also taught Columbia College courses, including a seminar on the Supreme Court.
Many have remarked on his similarities to the president who has nominated him to the Third Circuit: both are black men with immigrant backgrounds with Columbia and Harvard Law pedigrees.
