The The Report of the President's Committee on the Educational Future of Columbia University (also known as The Educational Future of the University and the MacMahon Report), was a comprehensive two-year internal assessment and review of Columbia. It was a major undertaking commissioned by University President Grayson Kirk and led by a committee of six faculty members, chaired by Professor Arthur MacMahon. The final report made a number of recommendations regarding restructuring the University, including reforming General Studies and establishing a new undergraduate college devoted to the sciences. In addition, the report assessed Columbia's standing vis-a-vis its peers and concluded that Columbia stood firmly in third among american universities, behind only Harvard and Berkeley.
