The University Medal for Excellence is awarded each year to an alumnus or alumna, under 45 years of age, whose record in scholarship, public service, or professional life is outstanding. Graduates from all divisions of the school (including Barnard College and Teachers College) are eligible. Recipients are honored at University Commencement with a citation and presentation along with the recipients of honorary degrees.

It is somewhat like the First Annual Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence.

The award has been conferred since 1929 and is given out by the Trustees committee on honors and prizes and the University Senate committee on honors and prizes.
