The Editors bulletin board is a place for the community of WikiCU contributors to leave notes and messages of interest or relevance to community in general. Check in regularly. You can also add the page to your watchlist by clicking on the drop-arrow next to the Read/Edit/View History tabs and selecting "Watch."

Note: New notes should be placed at the top of the page, not the the bottom.

New UNI policcy? Want to float an idea.

See the Block List here: http://www.wikicu.com/Special:BlockList. I blocked that last user because he/she (a) was registered with a GMail rather than a UNI and (b) because they looked like administration edits (for more of those see NoCo). So—I move that we make policy such that, if a user's edits are vandalizing, press-releasey, or otherwise ruinous to the quality of this wiki, we require a UNI. Case-by-case basis, one knows it when one sees it, etc. Thoughts? cds2148 15:51, 27 March 2014 (EDT)

Sounds like the right thing to do. Admin 03:28, 6 April 2014 (EDT)

Columbia's non-profit data

This should go somewhere. Any thoughts?[1] Uf001 21:42, 29 January 2014 (EST)

Yeah, it should. Probably just pull out whatever data is relevant to any pages and then cite.cds2148 15:51, 27 March 2014 (EDT)

2014 Wikithon

Hope you guys have time for clean-up tomorrow. Account registration is broken, so everybody is using Pbailinson's account. cds2148 19:17, 29 January 2014 (EST)

Proposed noun for WikiCU Editor

I'm going to be calling myself (and the rest of you) a wikicunian[s] from now on. Absentminded 15:51, 21 August 2013 (EDT)

A note on finding old material on Bwog

I know the that Bwog archives are a mess, but I figured out a way to better navigate them this week. Say that you only have an old, old link without a slug (e.g., one that includes "publicate" and ends with a number, e.g. "3113"), you can use the short-link system to find it. Just take the number after "publicate" and put it into the short link: "bwog.com/?p=[number]".

Also: if you're looking at an old post, but the link to the picture is broken, you can find it. Here is how. Say the link is "http://bwog.com/uploads/whoohoo.jpg". Gives you a 404. Now insert "images." before "bwog.com" and "wp-content/" before "uploads". That gives you "http://images.bwog.com/wp-content/uploads/whoohoo.jpg," which does work. Good for finding old party pics, pretty much anything from '06 through '09. cds2148 16:49, 4 July 2013 (EDT)

Hugely helpful, thanks! Absentminded 15:49, 21 August 2013 (EDT)

Spectator Archives updated (Again)

It looks like the Spectator Archives have been updated to add issues from 1938-1947, and the 1949-1950 academic year. Absentminded 18:01, 1 May 2013 (EDT)

Spec Archives have been further updated from 1938-1996 inclusive (with the exception of fall 1990). On-wards! Absentminded 14:01, 12 June 2013 (EDT)

Extended to 1938-2000 (still missing fall 1990). Commence modern-era research! Absentminded 22:56, 24 June 2013 (EDT)

Archive.is

FYI: if you see a page and are afraid it'll be edited/taken down, you can create a snapshot of a webpage that gets its own archive.is shortlink. cds2148 18:08, 11 June 2013 (EDT)

Nice tip, thanks! Absentminded 23:47, 11 June 2013 (EDT)

Annie Karni

I think there should be a page for Annie Karni. Thoughts? I don't have the contextual knowledge to write it, or at least not to start it. I only recall that she was at one of the ROTC townhalls that I covered, before which some then-upperclassman told me that she was ever-ready to pounce on Columbia. Which she ended up getting to do after that townhall. (Also, N.B. the page for the New York Sun.) cds2148 21:29, 4 June 2013 (EDT)

We actually used to have a page on her but it appears she requested it be deleted and our policy has been to respect subject requests. We can talk about modifying that policy, though. Pacman 10:59, 5 June 2013 (EDT)
Yeah, I think that policy should be modified. It's just bringing together publicly accessible stuff. (And, not that this should enter into policy decisions, but come on, Karni. Ye reap what ye sow.) cds2148 17:51, 7 June 2013 (EDT)

Reorganizing Main Page

Pages without photos

Is there a way to access this so we can add photos to pages that need them Ad2397 16:13, 13 May 2013 (EDT)

Good idea. Pictures add very much. cds2148 16:21, 13 May 2013 (EDT)
I'm not sure if such a list exists. It might be easier to systematically work through certain categories of things that should have pictures (like buildings, or current administrators). Absentminded 18:07, 13 May 2013 (EDT)
I'm not a coder, but basically you just need a script that searches all created pages and take out any page that has [File:*.jpeg‎*] or [File:*.gif*] and create a category page for it. Maybe a future project. Ad2397 18:17, 13 May 2013 (EDT)

Blogs

Would anyone care to update the list of blogs?  − Reaganaut  17:51, 4 May 2013 (EDT)

Thoughts on cataloging student websites

So Columbia students have a history of starting websites for the columbia community. A handful have survived more than a few years (CULPA being the great grand-daddy, and at this point I'd even put WikiCU in that category. It's been just over 6 years and we're not dead yet); most have died. Of those that died, some had an impact on campus life (CUCommunity, and Dogears.net come to mind, and CUSnacks featured prominently in a Varsity Show plot), while others seem to come and go without ever getting much traction (Hungrycu seems to have fallen into that crack. CampusPlaybook? PostATime? Buzzable? CUEats? CampusBoxOffice? Columbia Classes?) I guess what I'm getting at is whether each and every one of these projects deserves it own page (Notability!), which is the direction we've gone in so far, or maybe I/we should just come up with a single article chronicling Columbia students' ingenuity, with individual articles only for 'major' sites. Thoughts? Absentminded 16:32, 3 May 2013 (EDT)

We could do both? An overview page detailing what you just said, plus individual pages for websites people care to create pages for. Admin 05:39, 4 May 2013 (EDT)
That is basically what has been done so far. The notable ones usually get their own pages; for the others, we had the blogs page, which could conceivably be expanded to encompass other types of websites. Pacman 18:35, 13 May 2013 (EDT)
I got distracted by other stuff... It appears that there's a thing called the [Application Development Institute now. gotta figure out how to tie all that in. Absentminded 18:49, 13 May 2013 (EDT)

Notability standard discussion

There's renewed discussion of whether there's a Notability standard for wikicu going on here: Talk:Notability#Renewed discussion 2013. Absentminded 13:34, 3 May 2013 (EDT)
