Columbia has had its share of suicides like most other elite institutions of higher learning (but unlike NYU, which has had far more). If you or someone you know has made even a passing remark about suicide, it is suggested to contact Health Services immediately.

Partial list of suicides
This list is very incomplete since major media outlets, for the most part, stopped reporting on college suicides during the 1960s.
However, once I graduate I'll have very little time or inclination to moderate the site or make any significant changes. And it's not just me. TTan recently observed that "the current cadre of editors are mainly former CUCom regs and almost all of them are alums," and most other users tend to make worthless contributions (inside jokes, irrelevant, self-promoting, etc). As TTan says, "we need fresh blood on WikiCU." So we either need a marketing strategy or I need to have over the reigns to someone else. Now, the university - which includes the student councils and all student groups - doesn't want anything to do with the site because they're afraid of being liable for any contributions. (Technically, under the DMCA, websites aren't responsible for user-submitted content, but the university is stubborn, hey what's new.) In light of this, I see the follow options:

* Continue as before. Hope and pray for new editors. Maybe apply a new skin/theme/style to make it look all swish.

* Transform the wiki into something more like a portal with a Columbia start page, blog feeds on the front page, weather, Spec headlines, votes, a forum, etc. CUCommmunity reborn. On the downside this would take a lot of effort - I certainly couldn't do it myself. And do people really want another version of what is ultimately a social networking website when they've already got Facebook? This option would become infinitely more attractive if Culpa and/or Cueats and/or BoredAtColumbia.net would join us in building a mega portal.

* Hand the site over to Spec. They'll still be around in 10 years, and in between hopefully lots of Speccies will work on improving the site. But they're hardly the most innovative bunch (remember all those efforts at making a splog). And because they're run by a big group of people, and new people every year, they might never get round to making any improvements. Also several contributors here really don't trust the Spec.

* Hand things over to another successful CU website. Bwog? Culpa? Would they even want anything to do with WikiCU? At least they've demonstrated the ability to create a good website, respond to student requests, and keep their respective sites running for several years.

* Give it to Wikia, the commercial arm of Wikipedia. They'll keep it running. But it'll have a ton of ads and Columbians will lose all control.

* Give it to some other student. But who? Plus this doesn't solve much because this student will also graduate like me, and isn't necessarily more reliable than me. I think Culpa does something like this - the site is owned by one person, but they designate one or two current students to run it on an everyday basis. Questions: what if this one person completely neglects the site? and how does this person choose current students to run it? surely it's better to hand WikiCU to an on-campus organization that will keep the site running for years to come even if it doesn't do a great job???

:If the site can remain on this server I see no need for most of the proposed fixes. What we really need are more people with an interest in the sort of material that's compiled here. Here are some ideas for that, specifically:
::*Improve the site's Google rating. I'm not really sure how (maybe Google bomb stuff), but this has really low visibility on search engines, which hurts its relevance and ability to pull in contributors.
::*Advertise. Flyering, appeals to Bwog, whatever.
::*Reach out to alumni. They already contribute lots of stuff to the stories section of the alumni website, and have committed interests, like the Ultimate Frisbee team people. You could write to the alumni magazines (e.g. Columbia magazine or CCT) asking if they could run a story about the effort, which should pull in some disparate people.
:My two cents: adopt the culpa management scheme.
::*Flyer on campus to recruit a 'staff' of editors (admins, really)
::*At an interest meeting ask them to apply.
::*Application should include ideas for leveraging the wiki, increasing usage, etc. Should also ask them to create an entry from scratch.
::*I would really like to see some kind of development alliance between us, CULPA, and the new hungrycu.com guys.
::*It's pretty clear that because of it's nature the wiki will draw less traffic. It might be a good idea to flesh out a few areas fully to show off. Housing would be the easiest- come up with a standard article format and bring the entire category up to snuff for buildings, really put together a solid lottery article, since that's something that first years will ALWAYS come looking for help on. Then we let the wiki do it's magic when they start clicking links to other articles...
:First off. Make a prominent link on the main page to this. Right now, the only people who even know this discussion is going on are the aforementioned CUCom regs and other obsessive "Recent changes" checkers with no life. We need to put it out there that there's a serious discussion going on with respect to WikiCU's future. That being said, here are my observations:
::*I concur with Absentminded. There is a fairly well-established trend of student-run websites that manage to survive several generations -- most notably CULPA and Bwog. However, that's because they either have a strong and regimented organisation (Bwog), or they serve a pressing need (CULPA). Since it is the very nature of Wikis that they are collaborative and each contributors contributes with respect to his or her free time and knowledge (and also since there's no need for strong organisation), I think the CULPA method is an interesting study.
::*To add further credence to the CULPA method, I am a big fan of having a "core" team who can take ultimate responsibility and ownership for a site like WikiCU. For any community to exist (e.g. CUCommunity) there has to be base of regular users that know each other and work together on a regular basis. WikiCU cannot be Wikipedia because we simply don't have that critical mass of users (and even that being said, I will wager that the vast majority of Wiki edits are made by a relatively small base of editors, and the vast majority of Wiki users are readers).
::*Absolutely do not give it to Spec. That organisation can't even maintain a consistent web front (it changed no less than 3 times in my four years here). Their upper ranks are full of overambitious zealots over-eager to add their own stamp to a something that isn't broke to begin with. And the point about Splogs is well-put -- they can't even keep that up. What worries me more is that they will close it off, either explicitly or implicitly. ::*Absolutely do not give it to Wikia. I can only imagine the mayhem that will be unleashed on this if non-Columbians are the editors. We might run into your asshole friend who insisted on reversing all your edits on the "University of North America" (remember that?)

In November 2007, Columbia activists embarked upon yet another protest. Banking off several recent "bias incidents" involving racist graffiti and symbols seen around campus, a group of students went on a hunger strike, and lassoed some vague and general demands into an agenda they hoped they would coerce the administration into accepting. Students dropped in and out of the strike, but the plurality went without food for 10 days.

As of November 16, the administration met some demands it was planning to address anyway, which ended the hunger portion of the protest, though protesting students plan to continue camping out on South Lawn and holding vigils.

General focus areas of demands
# Administrative reform
# Further expansion of Ethnic Studies
# No expansion into Harlem (see Manhattanville expansion)
# Core Curriculum reform

# Bryan Mercer, 22, a senior at Columbia (dropped out on 11/15)
# Emilie Rosenblatt, 22, a Columbia senior from Illinois (dropped out on 11/15)
# Victoria Ruiz, 20, a Columbia junior from California
# Rich Brown, a Columbia junior (joined on 11/13)

Lucha, the MSA, the College Democrats, SEEJ, and the ISO are among student groups offering support. The CCSC, GSSC, and Barnard's SGA have offered "statements of solidarity".

The strikers are also supported by some members of the faculty, notably Hamid Dabashi, Gil Anidjar, Nicholas De Genova, and Barnard PoliSci prof Dennis Dalton, who declared he would join the strike, but continues to consume water and juice. The entire faculty of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race has also declared support.

Alumni who have visibly supported the strike include the hunger strikers of 1996, Mark Rudd, Jennifer Oki, Nell Geiser, and Alexis Pauline Gumbs. Anti-Columbia singer Nellie McKay is also an active supporter.

Opposition
An informal anti-strike group has been organized on Facebook by Aga Sablinska and has held counter-protests.

The ESC is the only student group to officially oppose the strike so far. A Spec poll found that 64% of the student body does not support the strike and that 73% think that the administration negotiating with them would set a bad precedent.

Anti-Manhattanville expansion Community Board 9 believes the methods employed by the strikers are unnecessary and counterproductive.

In a published report in Spec on November 15, Dean of Student Affairs Chris Colombo reportedly told CCSC President Michelle Diamond that the strike "is going to end one way or another tonight." Diamond subsequently issued a statement of her own, independent of the student government, asking for the strike to end. That day, the university prompted two strikers to drop out after threatening forced medical leave.

Timeline
* November 7: The strike begins, tents erected on Butler Plaza. In the evening, Christmas lights are displayed along fencing of the lawn. It is unclear whether or not the strikers received permission to use university electricity.
* November 11: Aretha Choi, battler of an eating disorder, drops out after she is found nonresponsive in 209 Butler and subsequently rushed to St. Lukes Hospital.
* November 14: At approximately 10:15 in the evening, Sam Rennebohm, a member of the ad hoc coalition in support of the strikers, surrounded by a crowd of approximately 200 supporters and onlookers, declares that on November 15 at noon, students will demonstrate to prevent events from taking placed as scheduled at the university, including an alumni dinner with former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Negotiations with the administration came to a stand-still with no new meetings scheduled. Shortly thereafter, Spec reports that a number of the strikers' demands have been met (see below).
* November 15: Mercer and Rosenblatt drop out after being threatened with forced medical leave by Health Services; strikers' rally has a minimal impact due to rain. That night, anti-strikers hold a well-attended yet passive gathering on the Low Steps.
* November 16: The remaining strikers break their fast, but the group declares it will still be camping out in protest and holding nightly vigils as part of "Phase Two". The anti-strikers announce their intention to continue their activities as well.
* November 17: Just one day after vowing to remain camped out on Butler Plaza, the strikers took down their tents, turned off their holiday lights, and took their cardboard octopus home. That's all folks.

Achievements
Columbia College dean Austin Quigley and Arts and Sciences VP Nicholas Dirks have tried to preempt the strike with announcements they're willing to make new administrative hires to represent diversity concerns, and have pledged further study regarding the status of the Core Curriculum. The Manhattanville expansion is so far not under negotiation.

On November 14, Spec reported that the strikers had won the inclusion of a Major Cultures seminar to become part of the Core Curriculum, transforming the existing Major Cultures distribution requirement. Later, the univesity seemed to suggest that reform of Major Cultures would simply involve various departments' "submission of new syllabi". Either way, this will require a $50 million fundraising project. Among the other major goals the administration agreed to was mandatory anti-oppression training for incoming faculty.

Jessie Spano was a fictional character on Saved by the Bell played by Elizabeth Berkley. Spano finished behind Screech Powers for Bayside valedictorian and decided to attend Columbia University after being rejected from virtually every other school she applied to. Since the division she attends is never revealed, it is possible that she was actually admitted to Barnard College.

Like many Columbia students, Spano had an unhealthy obsession with stimulants:

Matthew Fox (actor)

Matthew C. Fox, CC '89, was Columbia College's 2007 Class Day speaker. He plays Jack Shephard on ABC's TV show Lost, and was somehow involved in the 1988 football game in which Columbia broke its 40+ game losing streak.

Fox's selection as speaker angered many in the Class of 2007, some of whom called for him to be replaced. However, these students merely ended up creating several anti-Fox and ironic pro-Fox Facebook groups. The Bwog initially mirrored the anger of many seniors, but gradually took a more detached tone, labelling the affair Speakergate '07.

The Speech
Despite the general disappointment in Fox's selection as speaker, many students who heard the speech said he was great, if not even better than McCain. Nevertheless, rumors persist that his speech was ghostwritten.

Among the highlights of Fox's speech were his listing of previous speakers, who appeared to far outstrip him in prestige, but, according to Fox, lacked the closeness with the graduating class he purported to share. He noted that unlike Harvard speaker Bill Gates, he was indeed a college graduate. He singled out senior Julia Kite for being quoted in the Spec as not knowing who Fox was, but followed by claiming he had always followed his passions, and that the Class of 2007 should do the same.

MetroCards
MetroCards can be obtained in advance with flex or cash at a slight discount at the vending machines in Lerner Hall. In the station, MetroCards can be purchased from MetroCard vending machines using cash, credit, or debit. A single ride MetroCard, good for two hours, costs $2.00, though customers can save by purchasing pay-per-ride MetroCards. Pay-per-ride MetroCards can store between $4 and $80. Putting on $10 on your pay-per-ride MetroCard triggers a 20% bonus, whereby 6 rides can be obtained for the price of five (or, more accurately, $1.67 per ride). Unlimited MetroCards are also available for one day until the next 3 a.m. ($7), for seven days ($21), or for thirty days ($76). Complete MetroCard information is available here.

In the station
Trains are often rerouted for system maintenance, especially on late nights (commonly between midnight and 5 a.m.), weekends, and holidays. It may be a good idea to check the MTA website for service changes and alerts before leaving. Advisories known in advance specific to individual stations are generally posted throughout fare control and subway platforms. A weekend summary is commonly posted next to the system map on subway platforms. Station attendants, usually located in booths at many points of fare control, should be able to assist with routine questions.

Trains
How to get to Columbia
Take the (1) train to 116.

If beginning south of 96 on the Broadway IRT (1), (2), and (3), make sure you are on a (1) train before leaving 96. When service is running normally, this means walking across the platform at 96 to the local track. When (2) and (3) trains are running local (late nights and sometimes due to system maintenance), this means detraining at 96 and waiting for a (1) train on the same track. (2) and (3) trains do not run up Broadway north of 96.

Advice for going uptown
There's a world of New York north of Columbia that's mostly accessible by subway. Boarding an uptown (1) train at 116 means only a 10 8 minute ride to the Columbia Medial Center, exiting at the venerable 168 station, and a 15 minute ride to the Baker Field athletic complex, exiting (above ground) at 215.

Advice for going downtown
Beginning on a downtown (1) train at 116, be aware that the option usually exists to transfer to an express train across the platform at 96. The (2) and (3) express trains travel down Broadway on the upper west side and 7th Avenue below, making stops (alongside the (1) train) at 72, 42, 34, 14, and Chambers. Intermediate stops are accessible on the (1) train. Remember, express trains only save 5 to 10 minutes, tops, depending on one's destination. While time should be saved when traveling south of 34, it is probably to one's benefit to remain on the (1) train when traveling only as far as 42 (Times Square, a major transfer hub) or 34 (Penn Station, the next stop).

Crosstown
There are a number of ways to get crosstown from 116. The most direct route is not by subway, but rather by bus. The M4 (heading downtown), which can be picked up at 116 and Broadway makes a left on 110 and a right down 5th Avenue (with a stop at 86 for the Metropolitan Museum of Art). The M4 runs back up along Madison Avenue. Be advised that local buses do generally stop, if requested, at every avenue and every couple of blocks. Once on the east side, the subway runs up and down Lexington Avenue.

Crosstown buses are also available at 125 (one of which, the M60, can be boarded at 116 and Broadway), 96, 86, 79, 72, 66, 57, 50, 42, 34, 23, and 14, all north of Houston. Also, the (L) subway runs across 14 (and into Brooklyn).
You're correct that the SAT/ACT information is not reported; however, due to the nature of the student body, some GS students undoubtedly took the SAT before it was recentered, some probably took it recently, after being out of high school for a number of years, and of course as the article mentions, some students take the GSAE, so a score report, while in some cases useful, wouldn't give as accurate a picture as a score report for a more traditional student body, whose students took basically the same test at roughly the same point in their lives.
CC-GS Backdoor
*I'd like to flesh this out. Here's what it amounts to. GS undergraduates are granted access to the exact same education as CC undergrads (instruction in the liberal arts and sciences by Columbia's Faculty of Arts and Science), are given the exact same credentials (a BA from the trustees of Columbia university), but are admitted through a completely different and barely transparent process (as stated above.) So on the one hand, GS students are entitled to feel entirely the equal of their CC peers. On the other, CC students are entirely justified in feeling upset at GS's status- it's essentially dilution of what they were told was a restricted access commodity for which they fought through stiff competition to get access to- Columbia BA's. Nowhere does Columbia explain in its undergraduate recruitment literature that in reality there are an addition 300 students in the same program who didn't have to fend against 17000 other candidates to claim one of a 1000 seats. The confusion and outrage at this "revelation" that most CC students have a hard time grasping could easily be avoided if the University made the GS admissions process far more transparent (which may require making the requirements more stringent to avoid embarrassment and and even greater outrage- though this might result in a decline in admits, enrollments, and tuition dollars). As it stands General Studies IS ostensibly a backdoor to a Columbia BA. The charge can neither by proved nor disproved in the current situation, which only lends weight to the suspicion that it is. In general Columbia needs to re-think how its undergrads are organized. Of course Barnard doesn't help either... Absentminded 23:26, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
: I agree. That's actually what I was trying to do in this article. My belief is that CU owes it to both GS and CC students to be more transparent about this information. GS and CC students shouldn't have to feel like their degree is somehow less valuable due to a backdoor existing. For example, how hard would it be to post the SAT/ACT median and interquartile range? Feinstein 23:51, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
:: As long as the university awards the BA to GS students, it's difficult to argue that the school exists as some sort of back door. The residential college serves a purpose and a student body quite distinct from the nontraditional school, while each gives qualified applicants the opportunity to learn within the same university. While arguably transparent in its admissions criteria, many GS admits do come from other top tier universities, while others took time off for whatever the reason and decided that the time was appropriate for a resumption of studies at an elite university. Those that can't cut it tend not to return, especially with merit (and not need) being the sole determinant of continuing financial aid. Those that do generally contribute a great deal to the academic setting and move on to graduate programs on par with their residential college peers. The only students I've found dissatisfied with the existence of GS tend to be stuck in their own pretentious insecurities, seemingly bitter that the same degree is granted to so-called undeserving undesirables that failed to gain entrance to the degree through the unreasonably competitive traditional college process -- and since they somehow won that game, neither GS nor (in many cases) Barnard should receive papers conferring comparable studies completed at Columbia University. If the university bothered to publish the average GPAs of the three schools, I think this discussion would be moot. Sadly, like GS admissions statistics, they do not. ::* Demographics on the admitted class
::Feinstein 16:02, 27 March 2007 (EDT)

:::Actually, there is a fairly detailed profile of the 2006 entering class available at http://www.gs.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/newspages.dll/pages?sitename=COLAD&record=449&htmlfile=gsnews2.htm (or see the News section of the GS website). == CC-GS Backdoor ==
