Minghui Yu was a PhD student in the Department of Statistics. Scheduled to graduate in 2011, Yu was struck and killed by an SUV while fleeing attackers just north of the Morningside Heights campus.

Life
Before coming to Columbia, Minghui studied at USTC in China, in the Special Class for the Gifted Young.

At Columbia, Minghui was admitted to the Physics Department, but transferred to Statistics in the Fall of 2007. He served on the 2007-2008 working committee of the CUCSSA, and was also a TA for the statistics department.

Circumstances of death
On April 4, 2008, Minghui was waiting at a bus stop at 122nd St. and Broadway shortly before 9pm when three young Afro-American teenage males approached him. One of the males kept watch while the others assaulted and attempted to rob Mr Yu. MingHui Yu refused to give up his belongings, and the two attackers punched him in the face and kicked him. Minghui then attempted to flee from his attackers in desperation, however ran onto the street into the path of on-comming traffic. He was struck by a Jeep Cherokee. He was taken to
St. Luke's Hospital but passed away as a result of the severe head trauma he sustained.

The motivation for the attack remains unclear. While initially it was reported as an attempted mugging, later accounts strongly suggest that the attack had racial overtones, with the defendant stating "look what I did to that one" to his accomplices after the attack.

Investigation and aftermath
The driver who struck Minghui stopped at the scene and gave assistance. No charges were filed against him. An NYPD investigation is underway and is being supported by the Department of Public Safety. Images of the attackers were caught on several security cameras on buildings in the area by the Department of Public Safety.

One of Minghui's assailants, 14-year-old Afro-American Sheldon Johnson, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He faced the charge in juvenile court. He has pleaded guilty to second degree manslaughter.

MingHui Yu's family in China has been notified, and efforts are being made to bring them to the United States. A vigil was held on campus on April 7.

The Columbia Space Initiative (CSI) is a student group dedicated to space projects on campus and Columbia's largest engineering club. CSI competes in NASA challenges, do outreach and provide members with networking in the space science field. It was founded in September 2015 (unsurprisingly) with the help of professor and former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino. CSI has participated in three NASA challenges (Micro-g NExT, RASCAL and BIG), launched its own model rockets and balloons. CSI organizes many events across campus, including live call-ins with the International Space Station and talks with prominent people in the space domain such as former astronauts and NASA employees.

Membership and Participation
CSI is open to all current Columbia and Barnard students, with no application process required. The club encourages students to explore multiple missions and holds weekly general body meetings on Fridays at 4 PM in Mudd Building, Room 833. The annual "Liftoff Meeting" serves as an introduction for new members to learn about the various missions and opportunities within CSI.

Notable Missions and Achievements
CubeSat: CSI's CubeSat team is developing LIONESS (Line Imaging Orbiter for Nanosatellite-Enabled Spectrographic Surveys), the first satellite designed by Columbia undergraduates to be launched into low Earth orbit. The mission aims to study diffuse gases in nearby galaxies using an integral field unit spectrograph. The project has received funding through NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative, with a planned launch in 2027.

AQUAS
Launched in 2023, the AQUAS mission focuses on creating an autonomous, unmanned sampling vehicle to monitor and treat algal blooms in New York City's Morningside Park. Collaborating with the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and NYC Parks, the project aims to improve local water quality through innovative environmental monitoring.

Micro-g NExT
In 2024, CSI's Micro-g team developed the SEE LION, an autonomous camera and computer system designed to assist in unassisted egress scenarios from the Orion capsule. The device was tested at NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory in Houston, Texas, successfully identifying objects with high confidence.

Rocketry
CSI's rocketry team designs, builds, and tests high-powered hybrid rockets. Notably, they achieved successful launches of a 30k 805 lbf rocket at the Spaceport America Cup and a 25k 1200 lbf rocket at the FAR-OUT event in June 2024. The team continually works to refine control systems and develop innovative scientific payloads for high-altitude flights.

RASC-AL
Participating in NASA's RASC-AL competition, CSI students design mission architectures to support human survival in lunar and Martian environments. The 2025 objective focuses on creating a mission concept aimed at reducing risks associated with human exploration on Mars, with the goal of fostering a permanent human presence.

Outreach and Community Engagement
CSI's Outreach branch is dedicated to connecting with middle and high school students throughout New York City, focusing on increasing exposure to STEM concepts and careers. In partnership with the Sophie Gerson Healthy Youth Foundation, CSI volunteers conduct educational programs, including model rocket design and launches, reaching over 1,000 students in the previous academic year. Additionally, CSI hosts public events featuring astronauts and space industry leaders, often attracting over 200 attendees.

Awards and Recognition
In 2025, CSI was honored with the Zvi Galil Award for Improvement in Engineering Student Life, recognizing its significant contributions to enhancing the student experience within Columbia's engineering community.

University Commencement is the end of the line. Just over 12,000 degree candidates and more than 30,000 guests cram into Low Plaza and South Lawn and beyond.

All degree candidates receive 4 tickets for their guests. Since some candidates host more or less than 4 guests, a relatively liquid market in commencement tickets has developed. Most years some group of enterprising students set up a website to acquire or dispose of tickets.

The Ceremony
At 9:30am, the Class of 1893 bell in St. Paul's Chapel rings and marks the beginning of the the Degree Candidates Procession. This usually coincides with a loud cheer going up among the degree candidates. The soon-to-be graduates, who assemble beforehand on the upper campus, then descend down onto Low Plaza and take their seats.

At 10:30am, the Academic Procession begins, with faculty, trustees, and administrators proceeding from Low Library to their seating on the Steps. This marks the official beginning of Commencment.

President's Address
Whereas many schools invite a major public figure to deliver the keynote address at commencement, at Columbia that privilege has always been held by the University President.

This quirk is the reason for the annual complaints from Columbia undergraduates, whose Class Day speakers tend to be slightly lower profile, since a ceremony for 1,000 students doesn't have quite the pull as Commencement does. Students who expect the Class Day speaker to be high profile to make up for commencement are usually disappointed, though there have been some fine speakers in the past.

Conferral of Honorary Degrees and Awards
The Honorary Degree recipients are usually big names. The provost presents each recipient who is then hooded on stage. Also honored are the recipient of the University Medal for Excellence, the recipients of the Presidential Teaching Awards and recipients of the Alumni Medal.

Conferral of Degrees
Following Bollinger's speech and the honorary degree conferrals, each of the schools' deans (first of the undergraduate schools in chronological order, followed by those of the graduate schools in reverse chronological order) approaches the podium and presents his class to President Bollinger, asking (in an obsequious and typically witty fashion, e.g. "I beg you, sir") to accept them and confer upon them their degrees. Bollinger then accepts a scroll from them and following all the presentations officially confers upon the graduates their degrees.

Graduating members from each school typically wave (or throw) items representing their discipline during their presentation- apple cores for Columbia College, shredded newspapers for the J-School, a giant toothbrush for Dentistry, etc.

Distribution of Diplomas
After the ceremony ends, student a capella groups sing "Stand, Columbia". This is followed by a rendition of Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York," and assorted sappy songs typically associated with graduation. After "Stand, Columbia," in any case, students make their way down from Low Plaza to meet their families and guests and proceed to a pre-designated location at which they can pick up the diploma for their respective school. For CC, this is usually the upper levels of Lerner Hall. For SEAS it is with their departments.

Commencement History
Commencement had traditionally been held at churches near campus. When Columbia moved to its Midtown campus in 1857, commencement exercises were often held at the Academy of Music, a popular theater located on the corner of 14th Street and Irving Place. On the Morningside Heights campus Commencement exercises were first held in 1898 in the gymnasium in University Hall (now the Blue Gym.) Space was extremely limited and each student was only allowed a limited number of guests. Sound familiar? Since 1926 the ceremony has been held outdoors on Low Plaza, with some exceptions.

1786
In 1786, New York was still the capital of the United States. The first commencement of the newly-renamed Columbia College was considered such an important event in the city that, on April 11, Congress actually shut down to mark the occasion "to support the important interests of education by their contenance, and grace the exhibitions by their august present".

1789
George Washington reportedly attends Commencement after being sworn in as President of the United States.

1811
The 1811 commencement, held in Trinity Church, has gone down in Columbia history as "The Riotous Commencement." A student was denied his diploma after he decided not to alter his commencement oration. He appealed to the audience and disorder broke out, leading to a number of arrests.

1941
Commencement 1941 was tinged with sadness over the passing of baseball legend Lou Gehrig, who had attended Columbia, from his eponymous disease just one day before.

1968
In 1968, commencement was not held on campus and the university president did not deliver the address, thanks to the fallout from the protests of that year. Instead history professor Richard Hofstadter delivered the address to the students gathered in St. John the Divine, many of whom staged a walk-out on a pre-arranged signal- WKCR played "The Times They Are A'Changin"- and held a counter-commencement in Morningside Park.

2020 and 2021
Due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person commencement ceremonies and Class Days were cancelled and replaced by virtual events. As the pandemic waned and restrictions eased the Classes of 2020 and 2021 were jointly celebrated with in-person university wide and school specific ceremonies during 2022's Commencement Week.

2024
Despite being partly set up already, University Commencement in 2024 was completely canceled a week before the event as a result of the fallout from the Gaza Solidarity Encampment, which resulted in the sealing off of the Morningside Heights campus and fear of further protest action. Even Class Days were relocated to the Baker Athletic Complex.
The COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus pandemic profoundly changed student life during the 2019-2020 through 2021-2022 school years.

Timeline of Events
January 2020 to early March
*Concerns building around the pandemic, especially for New York City.
*Near the end of this period, Columbia administration keeping in eye on the infection rates, peer schools like NYU and other Ivies, and creating their own University COVID-19 Task Force with infectious disease professors, upper-level administration, and other appointees.

March
*After a period of uncertainty, students were told to leave campus, barring special circumstances. This was relatively well-received, compared to peer schools like Princeton.
*Columbia Housing directed students to two external moving and storage companies. Due to extreme load, this ended up working out badly, and many students were forced to leave their belongings or pay large amounts to ship them to their home addresses.
*Commencement and Class Day ceremonies for 2020 graduates are cancelled and replaced with virtual events.

Remainder of Spring 2020
*The semester moved to P/F (not P/D/F) for both SEAS and CC students.
*Many professors chose to cancel their final exams in favor of projects due to the P/F policy and timezone differences.

Fall 2020
*Both Summer 2020 and Fall 2020 were shifted back to letter-grading.
*Most student concerns centered around too much Zoom and screen usage, academic honesty, and timezones. Only classes under the Engineering department were required to be recorded and asynchronous.
*On November 16th, 2020, ESC announced that they had convinced the Columbia administration to allow SEAS undergrads to take one class P/D/F, regardless of class level or subject, including major requirements. This policy came in stark contrast to the usual SEAS P/D/F policy, which allows students to P/D/F one 3000+ level humanities class per semester. With this new policy, students had a chance to select the P/D/F grading option up until the last day of classes, and after learning their final grade in the class, had the option to uncover the Pass if they chose.
*Soon after, on November 18, CCSC announced the same policy would also apply to CC students. No such policy was extended to GS or Barnard students.

Spring 2021
*Despite many high hopes, Columbia did not return to normal in the spring of 2021.
*CC and SEAS seniors were guaranteed housing, while everyone else got the boot (students with extenuating circumstances had the option to petition for housing, and many received it).
*Barnard guaranteed housing for seniors and freshmen, while sophomores and juniors got the short end of the stick. As with Columbia, Barnard students could also petition for housing if they had extenuating circumstances, but because of Barnard's limited dorm space, very few were accepted.
*Despite it's best efforts to de-densify campus, around 70-80% of the undergrad population returned to NYC, scattered across dorms and off-campus apartments in Morningside Heights.
*To safely allow this much higher volume of students, Columbia developed a rigorous testing program.
*Courses were shifted to a hybrid modality, where each professor had control over how much they wanted to teach in-person or online, with in-person teaching staying within NYC guidelines of course. The vast majority of professors decided to stick with the online format, and classes that did go hybrid had mixed effectiveness.
*Facilities slowly opened up. Libraries were available to students who signed up for 4-hour time slots. Dodge Gym reopened for use. Undergrad labs once again began hiring undergrad students.
*During the winter, Columbia set up heated outdoor tents for students to have a safe place to socialize without freezing to death.

Spring 2022
*PrezBo announces a special ceremony recognizing the Classes of 2020 and 2021 to take place during Commencement week.

Fall 2022
*All students were welcomed back to campus with vaccine documentation or a really good excuse
*In-person classes resumed, while restrictions remained for the sizes of other gatherings
*After an uptick in cases in mid-September, which the administration blamed on on and off-campus parties, students were banned from inter-dorm travel. About one week later, the ban was amended to allow students to sign in one Undergraduate Guest to their dorm at a time.

The smarter method is to use Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird. Outlook has more features, but it costs money, you probably won't use the extra features, and you'll come to hate the program after a few years in the real world. Bellovin, CC '72, is a professor in the Computer Science Department who specializes in computer security and networks. He worked at Bell Labs for over 20 years before joining the Columbia faculty in 2005. He sort of resembles Santa Claus, despite being Jewish. In Fall 2006, he was hit by a car and returned the next week on a cane and jokingly suggested, "Maybe my next paper should be an examination of how a person and a motor vehicle cannot occupy the same space at the same time."

Teaching
Bellovin started teaching in 2005. He's a pretty big name in computer security, so he's often out of town on talks and receiving awards and stuff (~90% attendance rate). You can really get all the information you need from his slides, which he posts online, but then you miss out on all the cool tangents he goes on in class about the early days of the internet.

Steve announced in May 2024 he would be retiring and no longer accepting advisees, but would focus on writing in retirement rather than settling back in his rocking chair.
Edwin Howard Armstrong SEAS 1913 was an American electrical engineer who invented FM radio and its underlying receiver and transmitter technology.

Armstrong did some work for Michael Pupin while a student, then after graduation. Eventually, he managed to work his way into a Columbia professorship this way somehow.

Much of Armstrong's work, including the regenerative circuit, super regenerative circuit, and superheterodyne receiver was conceived in the basement of Philosophy Hall, doing much of the work as an undergraduate in the Electrical Engineering Department.

The Supreme Court later awarded Lee De Forest the patent for Armstrong's receiver technology after a prolonged 12 year patent dispute. Armstrong was later pwn3d again by RCA in a patent dispute over FM technology.

The patent dispute proved so financially and emotionally ruinous that Armstrong subsequently committed suicide in 1954, jumping out of his 13th floor apartment; coincidentally, Columbia's electrical engineering department is housed on the 13th floor of Mudd.

Armstrong is one of Columbia's most distinguished alumni and his work with FM led to the declaration of Philosophy Hall as a National Historic Landmark in 2003.
Moe Berg Law '30, is perhaps the most interesting personality to ever have stepped onto Columbia campus.

Moe Berg was a Major League Baseball catcher from 1923 to 1939. In his career he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, the Washington Senators, and the Boston Red Sox. Possessing sound baseball instincts and defensive abilities, he rubbed shoulders with many famous players, including Casey Stengel and Ted Williams.

Later, during World War II he served with the OSS (a government organization which would eventually morph into the CIA), parachuting into Nazi Europe to aid and assess resistance groups there. In the last years of the war, he rendezvoused with several German scientists to attempt to persuade them to defect to the United States and contribute to the Manhattan Project.

He also spent several months in Japan to take photographs and videos. These would be used to plan the Doolittle Raid.

He studied at Columbia Law School while simultaneously playing professional baseball. An undergraduate alumnus of Princeton University, he regularly read 10 newspapers everyday. He was also multilingual; it was said of him "he could speak eight languages, and couldn't hit in any of them."

His biography, authored by Nicholas Dawidoff, is entitled The Catcher was a Spy, which was also made into a 2018 full length feature film.
The budget was initially set at $2m. However, the final cost of renovating the structure, completed three years after Lee Bollinger moved in, exceeded $20m.

Following these renovations, President's House now features a dedicated Gigabit network connection, the use of which is unknown.

Lee Caroll Bollinger Law '71 was the president of the university from 2002 to 2023, a tenure surpassed only by the likes of Frederick A. P. Barnard and Nicholas Murray Butler. He is affectionately known as PrezBo (alt. spelling Prezbo), a term coined by the Varsity Show.

Presidency
Bollinger came to Columbia after serving as president of the University of Michigan, where he did now unthinkable things like host house parties for students. Occasionally, though, he will invite students for cotillions at the President's House, where he will deftly avoid providing substantive answers to any of their questions or critiques.

His presidency has been marked by the vague goal of making Columbia a "global university," including the creation of the World Leaders Forum and the Committee on Global Thought.

The massive Manhattanville campus project is another of his brainchilds.

Other activities
Once, in his spare time, he did something important involving law and affirmative action. Now, he mostly teaches undergrads how to behave like law students, luring them with a class on free speech, where he exercises Socratic Terror to compel debates that are still 1000 times more interesting than anything most actual lawyers do.

PrezBo also promotes physical fitness, inaugurating the 5K Fun Run. The event, which occurs in September every fall, features free t-shirts and is led by PrezBo himself.

Characteristics and interests
He is rarely, if ever, seen walking to and from his official residence at 116th and Morningside Drive. Rumor (though confirmed by many who have actually seen it) has it he is driven the 1.5 blocks from his office in Low Library.

He is recognizable for his wispy hair, trim physique, and vague, tepid statements about everything and everyone except perhaps Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Bollinger submitted an op-ed (his first and only submission to a campus publication) In response to a Spectator staff editorial which called for the firing of the Athletic Director, M. Dianne Murphy. This was responded to by CCSC President Daphne Chen, who asked Bollinger to "really speak to us" in a Spectator op-ed.

He loves the word "global" and uses it about five times in each sentence.

Asked by The Daily Beast what book everyone must read before graduating college, Bollinger said, "Montaigne’s Essays. Why? Because they teach you how to learn, how to observe the peculiarities of life, how to be a good friend, how to know and be honest about yourself—and how to spend the last years of your life once you have done your part to make the world a slightly better place." Because it would have been pretty embarrassing if he'd mentioned a book that wasn't part of the Core.

Bollinger's salary was $1.93 million in 2010, which made him the 7th highest-earning college president.

His favorite TV shows are Mad Men, Saturday Night Live, the Wire, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. He has gone hiking in an area densely populated with grizzly bears to test his endurance. He is a fairly interesting man.

Personal Life and Early Career
Bollinger was born April 30, 1946 in Santa Rosa, CA, the son of Lee and Pat Bollinger. He received a B.S. in intellectual history from the University of Oregon in 1968, where he met his future wife Jean. They moved east to Columbia University where Lee attended law school and Jean received a masters degree in curriculum and teaching from Teachers College . They were married in 1968.

After graduating, Bollinger clerked for the Court of Appeals and then for Chief Justice Warren Berger. He taught at University of Michigan's law school in 1978 and became dean of the law school in 1987. He became provost of Dartmouth College in 1994, and then president of University of Michigan in 1997.

Bollinger has a son and a daughter with Jean Magnano Bollinger, Carey and Lee Carroll. Carey Jean Bollinger graduated from Harvard in 1998 and from Columbia Law. She is on a leave of absence from a doctoral program in research psychology at Teachers College. Lee Carroll Bollinger graduated from Berkeley, and received his law degree from University of Michigan, and an LLM from New York University.
