Every action the club takes is directed by the National Organization's mission statement: "to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community". In addition to professional development, NSBE participates in community service and leisure activities. The group also participates in the annual Zone, Regional and National NSBE conventions.

Membership and Recognition
NSBE is recognized by the Activities Board at Columbia and receives additional support from the Engineering Student Council.

In addition to engineers and Black students, NSBE has members from Columbia College and people of all races. Members include first-years through seniors. Our members go on to work for a number of companies including: Proctor & Gamble, Boeing, J.P. Morgan, Microsoft, Amazon, Morgan Stanley, and many more.

General Body Meetings
Topics of the meetings cover the gambit including: finding an internship, surviving the corporate environment, getting into graduate school, finding a job, and many other similar topics. There are also meetings focussed on discussion and leisurely games to relieve stress and discuss pressures members are feeling.

Pre-College Initiative
According to the national website "the Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program is designed to stimulate the interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, or STEM. NSBE's goal is to encourage students in grades K–12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees".

The Columbia chapter supports this mission by tutoring high school students and members of nearby NSBE Junior chapters, in particular from the Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy.

T.O.R.C.H.
The Technical Out Reach Community Help or T.O.R.C.H. program is designed to serve the community by volunteering time to train community in the use of computers and other technology.

Also falling under the umbrella of TORCH is the annual event titled "A Walk for Education". During this event, NSBE partners with CCNY's chapter of NSBE to reach out to Harlem students and encourage them to pursue a career in STEM.

General Body Meetings take place Wednesdays at 8 pm West Ramp Lounge in Alfred Lerner Hall. Every meeting starts by the whole group saying the mission statement as a group.

The closest location is on Columbus Avenue and 97th Street, which is a very short distance to the 96th Street subway stop at Broadway. WFM also has five other locations in Manhattan:
* On the south side of Union Square
* At Columbus Circle in the basement of the Time Warner Center
* On Houston between Bowery and Chrystie in the Lower East Side/Soho
* On Greenwich between Warren and Murray in TriBeCa.
West Side Market, Milano Market, and Garden of Eden all make fairly good substitutes for WFM if you can't be bothered heading downtown.

The New York City Subway was designed by Columbia-educated engineer William Barclay Parsons in the 19th century, and looks as if it hasn't been upgraded much since. Still, it's the easiest and most economical means for getting around NYC should you be one of the brave souls who dare venture beyond Morningside Heights. The current base fare is $2.50 per ride. (Don't complain since in London the base fare is £4, or $8.) MetroCards are required for entry and can be purchased with cash, credit, and debit cards at any station.
