The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (referred to for branding purposes as Columbia Engineering as of the late 2000s, but almost always informally referred to as SEAS), is the engineering school of Columbia. No one calls it Fu. Ever. It awards degrees in engineering, applied physics and applied mathematics.

The school maintains a close relationship with Columbia College, and undergraduate students from both schools fall under the oversight of the Division of Student Affairs and live in the same dorms.

In 2011-2012, the School's research expenditure was $125 million.

History
SEAS was founded in 1863 by Thomas Egleston Jr. as the School of Mines and then the School of Mines, Engineering and Chemistry before becoming the School of Engineering and Applied Science. It was the country's first such institution. In 1997, the school was renamed in honor of Chinese businessman Z. Y. Fu, who had donated $26 million.

Following Columbia's move to the Morningside Heights campus, the school took residence in Lewisohn Hall and Mathematics Hall, which were then known as Mines and Engineering Halls, respectively. The construction of the Seeley W. Mudd Building in the '60s allowed the school to move into more spacious (though more ugly) quarters on the northeast corner of the main campus. Due to the growth of the school in the past four decades, further expansion was determined necessary, leading to the planning of the Northwest Science Building, which opened in the spring of 2011. SEAS will benefit greatly from the opening of the Manhattanville campus, including 1,000,000 square feet of space being allocated for a new Institute for Data Science.

Departments and faculty members
SEAS is divided into nine departments with a total of 152 members of faculty as follows:
* Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics Department (29)
* Biomedical Engineering Department (19)
* Chemical Engineering Department (10)
* Civil Engineering Department (13)
* Computer Science Department (35)
* Earth and Environmental Engineering Department (15) (formerly "Mining, Metallurgical, and Mineral Engineering (Henry Krumb School of Mines))
* Electrical Engineering Department (20)
* Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department (16)
* Mechanical Engineering Department (11)

Additional faculty unaccounted for in above departments:
* Computer Engineering (10)
* Material Science and Engineering (9)
* Other (1)

The Columbia Alumni Association (CAA) is an umbrella association for all university alumni that was formed in 2005-2006. You automatically become a member of the CAA upon graduation. It is not to be confused with the Columbia College Alumni Association or other individual school alumni associations.

The CAA was launched as a successor to the Alumni Federation. Its goal is to create a unified alumni association to forge a "sustainable, ongoing program of alumni relations," according to Eric Furda, VP of Alumni Relations. Whereas individual schools have had alumni associations of their own, no univeristy-wide organization dedicated planning events to bring together students from all schools had existed.

Since its launch, CAA has launched a University Alumni Newsletter, a University-wide Alumni Directory, and embarked on a blitz of events. In its first year the CAA hosted 150 events around the world that were attended by 11,000 alumni and guests. In summer 2007, it hosted a particularly glittering and star-studded alumni event in Paris.

Also in the summer of 2007, the CAA took over the Columbia Connections website.

Email
CAA offers @caa.columbia.edu email addresses to Columbia alumni, provided through Google Accounts. Once you sign up, you get two accounts, one is your UNI, and the other is customizable. So if you were Joe Bloggs, you might for example get jb2112@caa.columbia.edu and joe@caa.columbia.edu. According to a Bwog tipster lee.bollinger@caa.columbia.edu is already taken. Sign up soon if you want your customizable alias to be your first name!

CAA also offers email forwarding from your regular UNI account (@columbia.edu) once you graduate.

Sheila Misheni SEAS '14 is from Mombasa, Kenya and majored in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Sustainable Engineering. She was an elected member of the Engineering Student Council for the first three years of her college career, starting as the Class of 2014 Vice President, and then serving as the Vice President of Student Life for two years. She has also been an active member of NSBE, serving as their chapter senator. In addition, she was the president of the African Diaspora Literary Society.

Student Council
Sheila was a treasured member of the Engineering Student Council during her tenure there. Aside from the enthusiasm and passion she brought to the team, she implemented several long-lasting student life changes that will benefit future generations of SEAS students.

The following is a list of accomplishments Sheila has achieved through her involvement in council:

* The Engineering Research Symposium
** In her words: "Basically it showcases all the research that goes on at Columbia"
* Homecoming Week
** With the help of the incomparable CCSC Vice President Campus Life Jasmine Senior, Sheila instituted a week of events to help raise school spirit and strengthen the Columbia community during the week before homecoming
** Some of the events include: Carnival on Low Steps (complete with bouncy houses), Spirit Day, and Homecoming Give Away Day
* Tis the SEASon
** Sheila created Tis the SEASon to spread holiday joy and offer a mirror event to SEAS the Day, which occurs in the Spring
** Tis the SEASon is now known for causing episodes of immense jealousy among college students who wish they could get the free scarves, ear muffs, etc. that have been known to be given out at this event
* Engineering Week
** Sheila conducted a complete revamp of engineering week in Spring 2013 by bringing together all the engineering groups in a huge school wide collaboration effort
** Some changes include: Laser Tag in Roone, Passport to SEAS, and four different EWeek shirts.
* Career Fair
** Working with other engineering student groups like NSBE, SWE, and SHPE, Sheila helped work to bring the first ever student led engineering career fair in the Spring of 2014.

Basically, Sheila is an awesome person who helped make campus a better place. Cheers!

The Columbia Campaign, launched in September 2006, was Columbia's most recent fundraising campaign. It was the fourth capital campaign in Columbia's history, and the first not to bear the "Campaign for Columbia" title. When it was announced, its initial target of $4 billion was the largest capital campaign ever mounted by an American university, and has since only been eclipsed by one, a $4.3bn campaign announced by Stanford. In 2011, the Office of Alumni and Development announced a new goal of $5bn, to be completed in 2013.

By December 31, 2013, the Campaign had surpassed its extended goal of $5bn by raising a final total of $6,116,289,534. According to PrezBo, this is the highest amount ever raised by an Ivy League university, and the second-highest ever raised by any university (damn you, Stanford).

Launch
The campaign launched with $1.6 billion already pledged during the "silent phase" of the campaign. The campaign's launch had been anticipated since the University's 250th anniversary celebrations in 2003-2004.

Kick-off gifts included $48 million from trustee Gerry Lenfest '58LAW for a "challenge" matching fund for the endowment of faculty chairs in the arts and sciences and law, and $29 million from Robert Yik-Fong Tam '50BUS and his sister Wun Tsun Tam for faculty positions and the Committee on Global Thought.

Strategy
The University employed a variety of outreach tools to woo alumni donations, using a variety of media. The 2005 creation of the Columbia Alumni Association as an umbrella organization to reach out to alumni across the spectrum of CU's various schools was one of the centerpiece strategies of the campaign.

Subsequent donations
In April 2007 the University announced a $400 million pledge from John Kluge '37CC, all of it slated for financial aid. It is the largest gift in University history, the fourth largest received by any university, and the largest financial aid gift in the country. In 2012, Gerry Lenfest announced a $30 million gift to help fund the new School of the Arts building in Manhattanville.

Sub-campaigns
The Campaign features many sub-campaigns, including the $865 million Campaign for Undergraduate Education, the $100 million Columbia Campaign for Athletics, both formally launched in the fall of 2007, and the Second Century Campaign at the School of Journalism, launched in 2006 with the goal of raising $100 million in time for the school's 100th anniversary in 2012. There is also a Campaign for Engineering, which has an overall goal of $125 million.

In October 2012, Giving Day took place as a fundraising drive for the annual funds of the sixteen schools within the University. Since all dollars raised as part of that effort (over $6.8 million in one day) counted toward each school's annual fund, they were also included in the Campaign total. Giving Day was repeated again in 2013, raising over $7.5 million from nearly 10,000 donors.

Progress to goal
In 2011, the Office of Alumni and Development announced that the Campaign had surpassed its $4 billion goal ahead of schedule, and that the Campaign would continue on with the new goal of $5 billion by December 2013. In 2012, the Campaign again surpassed its goal early, with more than $5 billion raised almost 18 months ahead of schedule. It was announced the goal would not be extended further, but that the campaign would continue until December 2013. The final total raised was $6,116,289,534.

This progress moved Columbia up to consistently ranking in the top five universities for annual fundraising in the nation.

Senior Night is a well-established senior tradition, and perhaps one of the most successful. It's basically an excuse for seniors to start their drinking on Wednesday nights, instead of waiting until the customary Thursday like everyone else. Seniors gather at Havana Central for drinks, and there are usually drink specials or door prizes of some sort.

Officially, it is not a Columbia-organized event; it claims to be organized by the Senior Underground. Theories abound as to the identity of the Senior Underground, but remain as-of-yet unresolved. It's probably CCSC.
