The 2024 Gaza Solidarity Encampment was one of many protests taking place on Columbia's Morningside campus to express Palestinian support, condemn Israel's occupation of the Gaza strip, and demand the school's divestment from Israel following the Israel-Hamas war that started on October 7th, 2023. Starting on April 17th, 2024, this protest was special because it took the form of an encampment where students planned to stay in tents day and night on the Eastern part of South Lawn until the school met their demands. The encampment came to an end on April 18th when President Minouche Shafik authorized the NYPD to take action.

April 17
Around 4 AM
Approximately 50 tents were set up on East South Lawn. Protestors put up banners reading "Gaza Solidarity Encampment" and "Liberated Zone". A substantial NYPD presence was noted outside the university as soon as the encampment had been established.

Morning-Noon
Columbia President Minouche Shafik testifies in House antisemitism probe over the university's response to antisemitism.

Evening
The university begins handing out formal letters informing the students participating in the protest that if they do not stop immediately, they will be subject to sanctions up to and including suspension from the school.

April 18
In a letter, Shafik authorizes the New York Police Department to intervene. Starting at around 1PM, the NYPD's NYPD's Strategic Response Group enters the encampment and begins arresting protesters who refuse to leave. A group of Jewish counterprotesters congregated to celebrate the university's response, waving American and Israeli flags. A protest on 114th Street and Amsterdam Avenue formed, but was dispersed to allow buses with detained protesters to exit. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators recovered signage and repitched several tents. After many arrests, the lawn was cleared and obstacles were placed down by the university, presumably to prevent another encampment.

Protesters soon begin gathering on West South Lawn, continuing to chant in support of Palestine and waiving flag, but without setting up tents.

Most exterior campus gates are closed, and Public Safety Officers guard remaining entrances and restrict campus access to CUID holders. A similar practice was observed during earlier protests, but the number of open gates is now significantly lower.

In a press conference, NYC Mayor Eric Adams, alongside top New York Police Department officials, announces that police made more than 108 arrests during the sweep of the encampment.

At around 7:30 PM, the Student Affairs Committee sends out an email to all students, condemning the university's decision to bring police onto campus.

April 19
Protesters remain on West South Lawn.

At around 1:30 PM, University Senator Jalaj Mehta sends out an email "In collaboration with several Columbia University Student Senators" to all students, condemning the university's decision to bring police onto campus.

At around 5:45 PM, Assistant Director of Student Engagement Julia Dooley announces the cancellation of the Activities Fair scheduled for Sunday, April 21st as part of the annual Days on Campus event.

Later that day, Columbia begins issuing formal notices of interim suspension to students having participated in the encampment.

The Activities Board at Columbia (ABC) is the largest of five governing boards that oversee undergraduate student groups on campus. As of Fall 2013, there are 155 organizations recognized by ABC, including cultural clubs, performance groups, publications, and special events. ABC recognition affords a group the right to officially use the Columbia name, access to space reservations, and a potential budget.

ABC consists of an internally elected Executive Board composed of four members, usually with prior experience on the board, thirteen Representatives-at-Large, elected by the officers of recognized clubs, and four liaisons from the General Studies, Columbia College, Engineering, and Student Government Association student councils. These twenty-one individuals are responsible for approving expenditures, advising recognized groups in cooperation with Student Development & Activities (SDA), and voting on the allocations to each group.

In December 2009, the board voted to create its first non-voting position, that of Director of Technology. The DoT is tasked with the upkeep of the ABC Website, which served, since 2008, as the backbone of the ABC financial system, until LionLink took over that role.

History
ABC was formed in the fall of 1998 following the dissolution of the Union of Student Organizations amidst accusations of favoritism, corruption, interfering in the minute affairs of student groups, seizing money and power for itself, etc. the previous spring. CCSC and ESC, which had formed the USO in order to delegate the allocation of Student Life Fees to student activities, organized the generically named Interim Governing Body (IGB) to draft a constitution for a new funding board at the beginning of the fall semester, and ABC was the result of their work. It was decided that Barnard would not fund ABC directly, as a vast majority of the groups at the time were not Barnard affiliated.

Funding Structure
ABC has a complicated structure of allocations, and event approval that enable the board to serve as fiduciary for its groups, liaison with the administration, and solve problems within the bureaucratic structure. While the ABC traditionally has received much criticism for its shortcomings as a student-run organization, recent boards have worked to make the organization into an advocate for student groups with their efforts to build community on campus and encourage new events.

Currently, funding is granted by ABC in two main ways:
*Co-sponsorships, which student organizations have to apply for and are awarded on a per-event basis
*Allocation Packets, which are awarded at the start of each academic year and is calculated based on the previous year's granted co-sponsorships, event planning, and revenue. Generally, clubs spending most of their funds every year will be granted a higher allocation than clubs saving their money.

There used to be three categories of recognition for student groups, Categories A, B, and C.

*Category A: a more limited form of recognition generally reserved for newer or less active groups, as well as groups that do not require significant funding. Such organizations are allotted a maximum of $250 per semester. Newer groups often move out of this category after a successful few years upon their recognition.
*Category B: the standard ABC group designation. Category B groups are required to submit a budget to the ABC in the spring for the upcoming year. Budget requests can be for any amount, but are subject to approval by ABC.
*Category C: recognition category for "special" groups. These are groups such as heritage months or the Varsity Show that do not have programming throughout the entire year. These groups are allocated funds approximately a month prior to their event(s).

These three categories are no longer in effect, as recognized groups are now simply split into categories depending on the interests/career paths/communities they cater to, with each category receiving its own representative.

With new agreements between the councils and the ABC, instead of appealing to the ABC for additional funding, clubs will be encouraged to talk to the Joint Council Co-Sponsorship Committee (JCCC). The JCCC will grant appeals for unforeseen costs/circumstances, along with funding for new event ideas. Under the new agreement, the ABC plays a supporting role to clubs who wish to ask the JCCC for additional funding. The application for JCCC funding can be found on LionLink under the documents section of the Joint Finance Council page. This change was made due to the ABC's limited budget for appeals and the overlap in purpose for the ABC Appeals Committee and the JCCC.

Campus Perception
Most students, with the exception of those serving in leadership positions in student organizations, aren't familiar with ABC and might not even recognize the name. Among club leadership, ABC is mostly known as a source of funding, and often has a negative reputation following allocation cuts and denied co-sponsorship requests. Very few understand the inner workings of ABC and its policies.

In the 2007 Varsity Show, ABC was portrayed as a maniacally greedy, evil organization that had started World War II and which denied student groups funding in order to reconstruct the orb that once sat atop the Sundial, so as to determine the location of Alexander Hamilton's treasure. The depiction is a result of the shortchanging many student groups feel at the hands of Columbia's administrative and student bureaucracy, of which ABC is an integral part.

6 years after this unfortunate depiction of the ABC in the Varsity Show, the ABC spent the Spring semester of 2013 focusing on reforms designed to address students' concerns over student bureaucracy. After a semester of discussion with student councils and club leaders, the ABC board members put forward their proposed reforms to all the ABC groups' approval at their Spring town hall. The ABC groups voted unanimously to make sweeping changes to the ABC constitution, instituting a system of direct democracy for the first time, establishing ABC Awards designed to give more money to successful groups (particularly the ones with lower allocation amounts), and changing the first line of Article I of the ABC constitution to state that "The ABC is an undergraduate governing board that operates on behalf of its constituent groups," as opposed to one that operates on behalf of the student councils.

Regarding other changes for ABC groups in the 2013-2014 Academic Year, after discussions with the SGA in 2012-2013, provided that they attend FUEL, all ABC groups can now program on Barnard's campus and enjoy usage of the free AV and Tech policy available there. The GBB holds make-up FUEL sessions for student groups that missed FUEL on its regular date.

The ABC has also created the Awards Committee and the Outreach Committee, designed to offer additional resources, information, and support for ABC groups. The Awards Committee will both recommend and review ABC groups for various awards, such as the "Best New Event Award" or the "Best New Group Award." The Outreach Committee exists to institutionalize the usage of new office hours and various forms of media to help and inform groups. These changes are reflective of ABC's ongoing efforts to alleviate student frustration at Columbia's administration and student bureaucracy, of which ABC is an integral part.

Counting refers to a channel on the Columbia University Discord server whose sole purpose was to count to 1000 and beyond by sending numbers as successive messages. When the count was broken, meaning a message has been sent that violates the positive natural integer order, counting had to start over from 1. The number 1,000 was reached on December 29th, 2023 and the channel was locked at a value of 1,003.

Origin
On December 10th, 2021, Columbia University Discord member Legion requested the addition of a game to "fill the void". User spooky then expressed interest in counting to 1000, wondering if Columbia students could do so without "ruining the count". Although Legion clarified that he meant a bot game and even called spooky's idea "masochism deluxe", the first ever count was started by lindsxcr in the #general-chat channel. This count remained uninterrupted for over 24 hours and reached the number 74 before it was broken by someone using the channel for its intended purpose and asked for help recovering his lost AirPods. After it ended, the idea of a channel dedicated to counting was brought up by an admin but was not put into practice right away. A few months later, on March 18th, 2022, Legion once again asked about the Discord games he had requested. This led to the start of a new count in the #off-topic-chat channel that lasted for 10 days and reached the number 327 before it was broken by a double-count (the person that sent 327 also sent an image representing the number 328 right after). After this second failed count, a proper #counting channel with clear rules was introduced.

Rules
Rules were laid out by the server's admins at the channel's creation on March 28th, 2022. They are:
* Pictures, GIFs and other non-numeric messages like popular references may be used as part of the count as long as the number they depict can clearly be identified
* If a number is sent twice, the count is broken
* Sending a message that does not represent a number breaks the count
* One person may not send two or more messages in a row (no-double-count policy)
* Deleting or editing messages to resolve a miscount is prohibited and will cause the count to start over
Members repeatedly breaking the count on purpose may be blocked from accessing the counting channel by the server's admins. Some members have even requested to be blocked voluntarily after breaking the count by accident and/or to avoid stress related to its progress.

Common practices (unwritten rules of counting)
* It is common practice to start every new chain with a GIF depicting the fictional "Doctor Strange" character played by Benedict Cumberbatch lifting his index finger to form a one with his hand. Low counts have even been restarted because they did not start with that GIF
* Discussions about counting, including explanations of references used as part of the count, should be held in the #off-topic-chat channel
* If 1000 is reached by only a small number of participants rapidly sending messages in alternating order (a practice known as "boosting"), the count is considered illegitimate even if it does not violate the rules. On October 12th, 2022 the number 999 was reached through boosting, but was then intentionally broken to prevent it from getting to 1000.
* Numbers considered amusing in meme culture, namely 69 and 420, are commonly referred to as "nice" and "blaze it" respectively

Counting-Meta
On April 4, 2022, the decision was made to establish a counting chat, titled #counting-meta, within the #off-topic-text channel. This was to facilitate discussions about counting channel activities without disrupting the ongoing count. The thread saw activity for six days before becoming inactive. It was reactivated on September 9, 2023, with a new count that evolved separately from the original #counting channel. This new count, following a set of its own unwritten rules, reached 1,000 one hundred and nine days later on December 27, 2023 without the count breaking once. The count is still continuing and active as of December 29, 2023.

Counting Meta Unwritten Rules
* You do not talk about #counting-meta.
* You do not talk about #counting-meta.
* Numbers must be clearly and explicitly typed, avoiding ambiguous values, images, or GIFs.
* Messages can follow the numbers.

On April 4, 2022, the decision was made to establish a counting chat, titled #counting-meta, within the #off-topic-chat thread. This was to facilitate discussions about counting channel activities without disrupting the ongoing count. The thread saw activity for six days before becoming inactive. It was reactivated on September 9, 2023, with a new count that evolved separately from the original #counting channel. This new count, following a set of its own unwritten rules, reached 1,000 on December 27, 2023 without the count breaking once.

If the count is broken, meaning a message has been sent that violates the positive natural integer order, counting has to start over from 1. The number 1,000 was reached on December 29th, 2023 and the channel was locked at a value of 1,003.
The Columbia Underground Listing of Professor Ability (CULPA) is a professor ratings site which allows students to anonymously post their own reviews of their professors. The site is the main source of professor review currently available to the Columbia student body.

CULPA is not officially affiliated with the university.

Reputation
CULPA is regarded as one of the most useful tools for students looking to enroll in a class, boasting over 10,000 reviews.

However, because of the candid nature of the submissions (students tend to use CULPA to praise professors they like and slag off those they do not), the site has occasionally been accused of harboring biased reviews and misrepresenting professors (both positively and negatively).

History
CULPA was founded in 1997 by Alex Feerst, CC '98. After Feerst graduated, the site continued to be operated by Jonathan McCarter, CC '98. However, at some point between 1998 and 2000, CULPA suffered an untimely demise. The site would have disappeared completely, except for the fact that the Columbia University Marching Band inexplicably decided to keep a copy of CULPA backed up on their servers. In 2000, Ashran Jen, CC '00, and Ben Wheeler, SEAS '00, resurrected the site from its (figurative) ashes on the Columbia University Marching Band servers. Morris Doueck (CC '03) and Nat Lin (CC '04), took over from Ashran and Ben. Ben Falik (CC '04) and Pam Terry (BC '06) joined the team in 2002. When Nat and Ben graduated, Jonathan Wegener (CC '07) and Carly Baratt (CC '06) filled their shoes. And in Pam and Carly's year of graduation, Michael Decker (CC '09) and Seth Berliner (CC '08) joined. In 2008, Ron Gejman (CC '10), a programmer, joined the staff as well. Since August 2008, there are indications of that an overhaul to the website is underway. This overhaul has yet to occur.
From time to time the CULPA website stops working, but so far it has always resurfaced.

Starting around 2020, the site fell into neglect both by its developers and its users, and even became inaccessible at some point. This prompted the creation of new CULPA sites, notably culpa.app which claimed to be the official version run by the "actual CULPA admins", and culpa.io, an open-source, modernized version that also included the ability to review dorms, dining halls, libraries and more. The team behind culpa.app showed some hostility towards culpa.io, because it used what they saw as their reserved name. The validity of their claims was supported by the fact that they later managed to re-acquire the original culpa.info domain and told the creator of culpa.io that they had passed CULPA onto a group of students that failed to maintain it. In November of 2022, the Columbia Daily Spectator acquired CULPA, including the culpa.info domain (supposedly off said actual admins). In early 2023, both culpa.app and culpa.io were configured to redirect to culpa.info, therefore making Spec's version the only accessible version of CULPA today. The creator and maintainer of culpa.io (the open-source version) explained on Reddit that he took down his site when asked to do so by the new owners, and expressed support for this new chapter of CULPA, confident that improvements are on the way.

"Rivals"
Some students have been trying to get the administration to set up an official professor review site using the results of the official course evaluations.

There also exists a largely useless website called The SEAS Oracle.
For a short time, these three versions of CULPA coexisted, until culpa.app and culpa.io shut down in early 2023. The creator and maintainer of culpa.io (the open-source version) explained on Reddit that he shut down his site upon a request from culpa.app, but later configured the culpa.io domain to redirect to culpa.info (the original domain now run by Spectator) and made all previously posted reviews accessible (see External links below). A short time later, culpa.app was also configured to redirect to culpa.info, which is surprising, as it clearly goes against the site's goal of becoming the only version of CULPA. It seems reasonable to assume that this came as a result of discussions between Spec and the team behind culpa.app.
The Columbia Minecraft Club strives to foster a community for Columbia University students who play Minecraft. Founded by a group of friends playing the game together casually, this eventually evolved into regular meetings, in person, beginning in the Fall of 2019. The Columbia Minecraft Club was founded in the Summer of 2019. Since its creation, the club members have hosted weekly general body meetings alongside other special events. These special events include server launches, Minecon Live, skin design contests, building competitions, Bedwars Game Nights, and yearly anniversary celebrations. The group was officially recognized in the Spring of 2022 by the Activities Board at Columbia.
Columbia has 3 undergraduate schools of its own and 1 affiliated college:
* Columbia College (CC), a coeducational liberal arts college of arts and sciences.
* School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), the engineering and applied sciences school, which is strongly integrated with CC
* School of General Studies (GS), the school for "nontraditional" students whose education has been interrupted and other students with unusual backgrounds, including students of JTS and UTS. GS students are generally older than those in CC and SEAS, have life experiences to match, and live in off-campus housing.
* Barnard College (BC), the women's college across the street from Columbia. It has an ambiguous relationship with Columbia and the three undergraduate schools. Barnard is an independent school in partnership with Columbia, and it has its own administration, faculty, student body, and campus. Columbia and Barnard students may take classes on both campuses, eat in each others' dining halls, and be part of each others' clubs and sports teams.

Uris Deli is an on-campus dining outlet located, surprisingly enough, in Uris.

2006-2007 changes
For the 2006-2007 school year, several changes were made to Uris in an deliberate effort to keep out undergraduates and to cater more to business school students. The made-to-order sandwich counter, considered one of the best at Columbia, was closed. Tea and Tea, the bubble tea shop, was reopened in Lerner as Cafe East and the space was converted into vending machines. Currently, a b-school student-operated coffee shop occupies the space. Also, Uris stopped accepting Flex/Dining dollars, the primary currency of many undergraduate students, though this change was reversed in 2009.

Present
Today, Uris Deli is home to two Dining locations: Chef Mike's Sub Shop, and a Blue Java Café. Both locations are open to all Columbia students. Both locations share a seating space with tables both inside and outside.

JJ's Place is the late-night dining location at Columbia that is open from 12:00 PM to 1:00 AM every day. JJ's is located in the basement of John Jay Hall. Like John Jay Hall or Ferris Booth Commons, Columbia students may use a meal plan swipe to gain access. Barnard students can also spend points to access JJ's, although there exists a complicated history of Barnard students being barred from using the facility. The location used to house a student cooperative organic market. It was at one time an on-campus bar, serving alcohol to upperclassmen.

JJ's menu features chicken tenders, burgers, smoothies, fries, and other artery-clogging options, as well as a salad bar. The staff is also fun, nice, and all-around awesome. There is a candy-by-the-pound rack and a small "mini-mart" section where you can use swipes to purchase various grab-n-go snacks and drinks. The to-go section is also an abysmal deal, considering that only 4 items, each worth less than a dollar, will cost you a full meal swipe.

History
Prior to JJ's Place, the basement of John Jay Hall was occupied by the Lion's Den. When the Den moved to Ferris Booth Hall, the space was renamed the "Crown Room", although undergraduates were at times excluded from the space. Later, part of the Crown Room became the "John Jay Pub", which closed in the summer of 1985 after New York raised its minimum drinking age to 21, effectively killing off its business. The space was then renamed the "John Jay Lodge" following a renovation that gave it a hunting lodge theme (though some students uncharitably compared the decor to a "French harlot house" and the "Amityville Horror.")

Interior
JJ's has OK seating with lots of tacky timber. LCD televisions were installed in 2006 at each booth, and there's a television at the far end of the room which primarily features ESPN, though can be changed to different channels using the handy channel up/down buttons on the front. It also has wifi. They have a foosball table.

It was recently renovated in the summer of 2012, turning its once run-down appearance into a dining hall reminiscent of Applebee's, complete with sound system and bright orange and green paint. There's used to be a (broken) air hockey table, as well as a Jamba Juice machine with various flavors. Rumor is the CEO of Jamba Juice's daughter, who attends Columbia, made this happen.

The facility was originally designed to resemble a German rathskeller, which explains the roof beams. A heaving stone hearth off to one side bears an inscription memorializing Columbians who lost their lives in the First World War.

Opening hours
JJ's used to be open from 12PM to 10AM daily, but is now only open from 12PM to 1AM.

Initially, it was closed on weekend nights, but starting in Fall 2011, JJ's Place opened on weekend nights as well.

The 2012 Spectator plagiarism incident occurred in September 2012, when an Arts & Entertainment deputy at the Columbia Daily Spectator, was accused of plagiarizing a New York Times article about a Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit. The similarities between the two articles were first discovered by IvyGate. The incident was also covered by Bwog and the journalism blogs Poynter and Romenesko.
Alleged Plagiarism
These are the three paragraphs that she allegedly plagiarized from the New York Times.

New York Times:
<blockquote>The Modernist architect Frank Lloyd Wright wasn’t a hoarder. But he did save just about everything — whether a doodle on a Plaza Hotel cocktail napkin of an imagined city on Ellis Island, his earliest pencil sketch of the spiraling Guggenheim Museum or a model of Broadacre City, his utopian metropolis. Since Wright’s death in 1959 those relics have been locked in storage at his former headquarters —Taliesin, in Spring Green, Wis., and Taliesin West, in Scottsdale, Ariz.</blockquote>

Spectator:
<blockquote>Frank Lloyd Wright was notorious for saving everything, from his personal correspondence to scribbles on Plaza Hotel napkins. Since Wright’s death in 1959, these relics have been locked in storage.</blockquote>

New York Times:
<blockquote>Among the gems in that material are drawings for Wright’s Fallingwater, a home cantilevered over a stream in Mill Run, Pa.; the Robie House, a Prairie-style building on the University of Chicago campus; Unity Temple, a Unitarian Universalist church in Oak Park, Ill.; and Taliesin West.</blockquote>

Spectator:
<blockquote>Among the University’s future collection are the famous original drawings for Wright’s Fallingwater, a home designed amid a rushing stream in Pennsylvania, and the Robie House, a Prairie-style building on the campus of the University of Chicago.</blockquote>

New York Times:
<blockquote>While Wright is typically thought of as "a lonely genius," Mr. Bergdoll said, "you move him into the Museum of Modern Art, and he’s dialoguing with Le Corbusier in the company of Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto and Louis Kahn."</blockquote>

Spectator:
<blockquote>"While Wright is typically thought of as a lonely genius, you move him into the Museum of Modern Art, and he’s dialoguing with Le Corbusier in the company of Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto, and Louis Kahn," said Barry Bergdoll, chief curator of architecture and design at the MoMA.</blockquote>

Aftermath
After a short internal investigation, the article was replaced with an editor's note.
<blockquote>Editor's note: It has come to our attention by a post on the blog IvyGate that portions of this story as originally published contain similarities to a New York Times article published on September 3 on the same topic. We are currently reviewing the story and have removed it until we determine the extent of those similarities.</blockquote>

That editor's note was later updated.
<blockquote>Editor's note, updated: Spectator is committed to accurate and original reporting, and we have retracted this story after verifying that at least three paragraphs were largely identical to those in the New York Times piece. We will be reviewing the writer's other work and will update readers as we know more.</blockquote>

The next day, Spectator editor Sarah Darville announced that the writer had been fired.

Many people considered Bwog's coverage of the incident to be sensationalist and tasteless, particularly their joke about "turn[ing] Spec into a 3-story Pinkberry." The incident only worsened Bwog/Spec relations.
