Vikas, 19, began tap dancing at the age of 9 and has since maintained his equal passions for dance and science. He spent half of last summer teaching dance and choreographing competitive dance pieces in the Seattle area, and the second half living in Los Angeles where he danced for Muse Dance Company. The School’s New York City location was a big draw for Vikas, who hopes to one day perform on a major stage.

He continues to train at Broadway Dance Center in midtown and recently joined a dance company set to have its first performance in November. While some may consider tap dancing and engineering polar opposites, Vikas offers a different viewpoint. “Tap dancing is all about musical precision. The best tap dancers are amazing because they can ‘speak’ clearly with their tap shoes. In relationship to the music, they know when to make sounds and when to sit quiet,” explains Vikas. “My engineering background helps me with overlapping disparate rhythm patterns. Studies have pointed to the fact that math and music use similar parts of the brain, and I guess I’m another example supporting that theory!”

Also a bit of an entrepreneur (he started a company in the seventh grade that converted customers’ old VHS tapes to DVDs), Vikas likes that the School provides an exciting entrepreneurial environment. “Through programs like Columbia Business Lab, Columbia has shown that it is dedicated to helping its entrepreneurs get their ideas off the ground,” says Vikas, “and a school that fosters that type of environment is definitely one I want to be a part of.”

The Undergraduate Recruitment Committee (URC) is a subunit of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for students who are interested in being part of the recruitment effort for Columbia Admissions. The largest part of being a member of the URC is being a campus tour guide, leading a weekly tour of prospective students, families, and visitors around campus and explaining the history and culture of Columbia. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions recruits new members of the URC each fall. Members undergo extensive training in the spring before becoming full URC members.

The URC consists of an Advisory Board, which is made up of roughly fifteen upperclassmen who help administer the varying programs put on by the URC, and the general body, which is made up of over 150 active tour guides. In addition to the URC, the Multicultural Recruitment Committee (MRC) and the Global Recruitment Committee (GRC) also support the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in recruiting students.

Engineering tours have been updated and enhanced in recent years, due to the growth and construction of new aspects of the Fu Foundation both in its programme as well as the buildings that contain it. Those in charge of the Engineering tour program include recent SYTYCD season 12 Vegas week finalist Vikas Arun.

Programs
* Days on Campus
* Phone-a-thons to admitted students
* Lion's Den
* Online chats to prospective students
* The Alma Mater Program, whereby students return to their high school over break to present about Columbia
* Overnight & Lunch visit programs, through which prospective high school seniors stay overnight or have lunch with a Columbia student in the fall
* Student Services Rep: Works with VP for Policy to pursue policy changes to student services such as housing and dining.
* Alumni and Pre-Professional Affairs Rep: Works with CCE to plan events geared towards career/internships. Also works with Columbia Engineering Alumni Association to plan events related to alumni and student interaction.
* Combined Plan "3-2" Representative: Created in 2013, advocates for the 3-2 population.
* Director of Technology: Created in 2008; handles ESC website.

Liaisons
The ESC has three official liaison positions to the other undergraduate student councils, with one liaising to CCSC, GSSC, and SGA. In 2010, the council added the position of Sustainability Liaison to liaise with Green Umbrella.

Co-sponsorships
See Joint Council Co-Sponsorship Committee. The large majority of ESC co-sponsorships are run through the JCCC, though other events may be co-sponsored by ESC or its constituent class councils.

In Fall 2013, ESC introduced ESC Project Grants, which are "grants aimed at promoting engineering spirit through engineering projects". Seven student teams were awarded up to $1000 each to work on their own extracurricular engineering projects.

Elections
Since time immemorial, ESC internally elected executive board members, including the president. This was the subject of much controversy over the years, as the election rules can only be altered during the annual constitutional review. Several council members proposed amendments calling for direct elections, but none were approved. Several years ago, someone accused the ESC of being insular and that it was only electing current council members to E-board positions. The ESC was also widely criticized by campus news sources such as Bwog and Spectator for holding internal elections.

In 2011, ESC voted during its annual constitutional review to approve direct elections of its executive board. It was decided the first-such elections would take place in 2012, as time was needed to draft election rules for these positions. Tim Qin SEAS '13 became the first ESC President to be elected by the undergraduate engineering student body.

In 2013, ESC voted during constitutional review to have its elections run by a centralized elections board.
