627 W. 115th St is a brownstone residence hall located on 115th Street between Broadway and Riverside Drive. It's commonly referred to as "ZBT," the "ZBT House," or the "former ZBT House" after the fraternity that used to own and occupy the house. Due to a rumored legal dispute with ZBT national, the house can no longer legally be called the above names and was renamed Owl House.

Unlike other residence halls, ZBT cannot be picked into during the housing lottery, since it houses undergraduate transfer students from Columbia College and SEAS, like Carleton Arms. This could be part of Columbia's plot to increase revenue by taking in more transfer students, as outlined in An Agenda for the Future. Or it could just be that Columbia's offering more of them guaranteed housing. Unlike any other Columbia dorm (excluding Symposium), residents do not have a security desk, meaning they can swipe in as many Barnard and GS students as they want.

The only comparable non-SIC dorm is Symposium. ZBT's advantage over Symposium is that the facilities are better, and there is a huge basement lounge. But on the other hand, the rooms are mostly doubles and triples to make up for the huge square footage.
Zeta Beta Tau is a fraternity primarily composed of baseball players. Prior to 2013, it had a house at 627 West 115th Street.

History
Ancient history
Phi Epsilon Pi was merged into Zeta Beta Tau.

Recent Incidents
In fall 2012, a rumor in the Blue and White describes a prank played by the women's team in which they oiled the floors of the ZBT house while the brothers slept, causing them to slip and fall. One of them cracked a rib.

In February of 2013, ZBT's charter was revoked for an undefined hazing incident. Rumor has it that the field hockey team was involved. Athletics and the InterGreek Council orginally kept mum, as did ZBT brothers.

In March of 2013, Dean Kevin Shollenberger reversed the Greek Judicial Board's decision to revoke the charter. The fraternity agreed to follow a plan of action drawn up by the University following Shollenberger's decision.

In August of 2013, Bwog posted that ZBT had lost its house over a "party violation" that nullified KevSho's clemency. Spectator later printed that many of the ZBT members intending to live in the house were instead placed in Plimpton.

In October of 2013, Spectator ran an article containing interviews with two ZBT alumni confirming the rumor that the hazing was committed primarily by the women's field hockey team. According to the alums, the team was completing a ritual where they went to each of the frat houses and had members ask the freshmen girls questions, some about their sexual history. At ZBT, one of the brothers sprayed a girl with water, causing her to cry. The ensuing yelling at the brother caused a neighbor to file a noise complaint. The administration investigated and discovered the hazing taking place, resulting ZBT's loss of chapter recognition by the Greek Judicial Board, upheld by Terry Martinez.

After negotiations with the administration by alumni, Kevin Shollenberger overturned the decision, requiring ZBT to draft an action plan on how to avoid future hazing incidents. Members implicated in the hazing were also expelled from the fraternity. All was well until May, when the baseball team won the Ivy League championship. An impromptu victory party was thrown in the house, organized by some of the expelled brothers. Although no noise complaint was filed, this was against the terms of the fraternity's action plan. After ZBT left for the summer, administrators discovered the empty kegs in a closet and learned of the victory party. As a result, ZBT lost their house, this time for good. Many were reassigned housing in Plimpton.

In November, 2013, The Columbia Lion reported that ZBT had its national charter revoked until 2015.

Although ZBT has not occupied it since 2013, their former house at 627 West 115th Street is still widely known as the "ZBT House," the "former ZBT House," and the "house formerly occupied by ZBT." However, after a rumored legal dispute with the ZBT national headquarters, the house can no longer be legally called any of the above names. It was renamed Owl House.
Zeta Beta Tau is a fraternity primarily composed of baseball players. Prior to 2013, it had a house at 627 W. 115th Street.

Between June 14 and June 22, 2016, members of CDCJ occupied Low Library to push Columbia to divest from fossil fuel stocks. Though the sit-in started with 14 students, only six remained in Low at the end of the protest. The six students were known as the Infamous Six.
It can be rough going if a lot of riders wind up getting on and off as the bus traverses 125th Street in Harlem, but is otherwise one of the best deals in town.

Select Bus Service was going to come to the M60—meaning that the 125th Street stretch would have made fewer stops—but it was scrapped over unspecific community concerns.
The New York City Subway was designed by Columbia-educated engineer William Barclay Parsons in the 19th century, and looks as if it hasn't been upgraded much since. Still, it's the easiest and most economical means for getting around NYC should you be one of the brave souls who dare venture beyond Morningside Heights. The current base fare is $2.75 per ride. (Don't complain since in London the base fare is £4, or $8.) MetroCards are required for entry and can be purchased with cash, credit, and debit cards at any station.

Occasionally, the subway stops running between 96th Street and 137th Street. It sucks when this happens.

The Columbia Muslim Students Association is one of the oldest in the United States. Students from all the undergraduate and graduate schools at Columbia participate in the CU MSA, contributing to its multi-faceted diversity. The MSA is dedicated to creating a strong Muslim community on campus by creating a space for Muslims to interact with one another as well as the larger Columbia University community. MSA events and initiatives are aimed at promoting a greater understanding of the religion of Islam among all members of the Columbia community. The MSA aims to strengthen the Muslim community while concomitantly building strong relations with the larger university and local community. This is done through various types of activities and events, ranging from interfaith community service projects to weekly Friday prayers.

In February 2012, AP reported that the NYPD Cyber Intelligence unit regularly monitored the websites of Muslim students groups several New York universities, including Columbia's MSA. Students were upset, Spec reported.

Structure
The MSA consists of an undergraduate executive board, a social justice branch (Project Nur), an alumni network, and a general body.

Yearly Events
In addition to the variety of events that the MSA hosts, there are three major events which occur annually:

Muslim Protagonist: a symposium on Muslims in literature and the arts.

Islam Awareness Week: a week filled with events with the purpose of spreading awareness about Islam.

Fast-a-thon: a banquet-style fundraiser that raises awareness for a charity and for the practice of fasting.

Print@CU is a stupidly easy web interface for using Columbia printers. It was created by Sam Aarons in November 2011 after a mere 16 hours of work [http://bwog.com/2011/11/30/printingcolumbia-minus-the-pain/ ]. It has since added Dropbox integration, printer status displays and print from url capability.

To use the site, upload your document into Print@CU. The site sends your file to a Columbia printer, at which point you enter your UNI at the NINJa terminal to print normally.

Note that trying to print images can be spotty.

In fall of 2013, Spec bought it and added advertisements. In 2014, the entire page became an ad for Bernheim and Schwartz.

Your document is printing as:
Before Spec "improved" it, Print@CU didn't ask for UNIs and instead submitted documents from a list of false names. It was rumored to select the name Malkovich when parts of the system are experiencing errors, leading to entire printers being consumed by the name. This list has included:

Before Spec "improved" it, Print@CU didn't use to ask for UNIs and instead submitted documents from a list of false names. It was rumored to select the name Malkovich when parts of the system are experiencing errors, leading to entire printers being consumed by the name. This list has included:
*Forbes Celebrity 100
*LOST Cast Members
*Time 100

Due to monopoly pricing, textbooks can be expensive.

Strategies for avoiding textbook price-gouging
Don't buy the book
Determine if you really need the book. Unless the professor is assigning problems directly from the textbook, it is usually possible to do without.

Borrow the book
Sometimes the CU library system has the book you need in its regular collection. If not, you can usually check out a reserve copy from the library and photocopy what you need... or the entire book with our high-tech book scanners. Another fruitful library strategy is to use Borrow Direct, which allows you to check out materials from a number of University libraries for a standard term of one month. You can also check if any of the three public library systems in the city has the book (unlikely, but possible).

Buy used textbooks
The CU bookstore sells used textbooks, but also offers them frightfully expensive prices (usually about 10% off new.) For online shopping Powell's, Amazon, or eBay, generally offer better discounts. The Morningside Bookstore carries some used books as does The Strand downtown. Often the book tables on Broadway stock books from large lecture classes or Core classes.

Buy textbooks in a third-world country
Publisher's often create special editions of textbooks for sale outside the United States. Usually, the foreign editions are stripped down somewhat; softcover instead of hardcover and black & white instead of 4-color, but these editions contain the same content. Other countries have more liberal interpretations of copyright law and will 'make' you a copy. The easiest way to get these editions is to know someone from one of the countries in question to purchase it for you. Even if you travel to the source, there is no guarantee they will sell you the book.

Download the textbook
In this digital age, publishers are often making their textbooks available for download (at least to professors.) I am told by other students that can download these for (ahem) free on something called the Internet.

Many texts can be downloaded legitimately for free. Many Core Curriculum texts were written by people who have been dead so long they're out of copyright. Some are so old they were never copyrighted to begin with. Crazy.

The Columbia Daily Spectator is the weekly newspaper of the university community and Morningside Heights. It is written by undergraduate students and operated out of the Spectator office at 112th Street and Broadway. The paper is referred to simply as "Spec." The paper is printed in broadsheet format every Thursday during the academic term. 5,000 copies are printed and delivered to over 150 locations throughout Morningside Heights, and they are read by God knows how many people.

History
Spec was founded in 1877 by William Barclay Parsons and someone else. It is the second-oldest continually operating college news daily in the nation, after The Harvard Crimson. It has been financially independent of the university since 1962. However, between 1964 and 1970, it received subsidies from the university of up to $20,000.. On December 17, the Spec and Columbia kissed and made up, the Spec got their $25,000 loan, Columbia got free printing services for five years, and the Spec got more time to squeeze $16,000 from their alumni.

Turn to broadsheet
Previously printed in tabloid format, in September 2004 the Spec started printing in broadsheet form. The editors at the time somehow thought they deserved to "move up" in the newspaper world, taking their place next to slightly more distinguished papers like the New York Times. This move was distinctly against the grain; a large and increasing number of newspapers around the world are moving or have already moved to tabloid format, which is more popular especially with readers in cities.

Some students at Columbia agree that broadsheet newspapers are inconvenient and would like to see Spec return to tabloid format. Tabloid sized papers are conveniently hidden in notebooks if you're inclined to read in class. Other students believe that broadsheet format adds a dab of prestige to the Spec brand and allows it to stand up to its Ivy League peers. Nowadays, few people care because who still reads newspapers in print?

The Web
Also see: The 2009 Spec Website Takedown

The Spectator is also available on the web. In recent years, the online staff has changed the organization of the website on an almost annual basis, and as a result, certain hyperlinks to the site are broken.
In 2010, the Spectator launched Spectrum , a blog updated several times per day with news, arts, sports, and opinion posts. Spectrum follows several misadventures in blogging for the Spectator, but appears to be a relative success.

Ending Daily Print Production
Also see: End of Daily Print Spectator

In April 2014, the Spectator Corporate Board moved to end daily production of its print edition. In face of declining print revenue and the supposed inevitability of cutting print production a new model was proposed: the paper would move to a weekly print edition and beef up its website. A majority of the paper's trustees approved.

Recent spinoffs
Blogs
Defunct
Spec's road to producing a successful blog was long and arduous. In February 2006, the paper launched a series of blogs, aptly named SpecBlogs. These blogs soon became defunct. Another blogging effort, launched in October 2006 to cover the 2006 midterm elections, proved more successful. In December of 2007, the newspaper launched yet another blog, this time specific to the Opinion page, called "The Steps". Those blogs are now also defunct. However, SpecBlogs.com was subsequently revived again, with a repertoire that included Commentariat (the new opinion blog), Spectacle (for arts and entertainment), and The Editors Notes. These blogs were phased out upon the creation of the omnibus Spec blog Spectrum (see below).

Spec's short-lived attempts at producing successful blogs were frequently mocked by the initially much more successful Bwog as the "Splogs".

A recurring blog on Specs website during housing lottery season, since 2007, has been the housing blog The Shaft, which survived the carnage of Spec's other early blogging efforts, and is now incorporated as part of Spectrum.

Current
Under the tenure of the 134th Managing Board, the Spec has made a renewed effort at the Spectator blog. Rebranded as "Spectrum", a revamped daily blog was launched in March of 2010. The current Spectrum editor is Hannah Josi.

The Eye
In September 2006, Spectator staff launched The Eye, a weekly magazine featuring investigative pieces and commentary on Columbia and NYC. The goal of starting The Eye was to provide a platform much of the feature writing that Speccies did for The Blue and White in addition to topics that had no previous coverage. The name of The Eye relates both to the fact that one "spectates" with it and urban theorist Jane Jacobs' notion that "eyes on the street" help keep neighborhoods safe.

As of 2015, The Eye is no longer in print after the rest of the paper switched to weekly print in fall 2014.

Organization & management
The Spec is currently run by the 139th managing board. Membership of the current and past boards is listed here: Managing Board of the Columbia Daily Spectator.

Writing and non-writing departments are each headed by an editor, and are overseen by the editor-in-chief. Writing departments include campus news, city news, sports, arts and entertainment, and opinion. Non-writing departments include photography, multimedia, design, copy, and business. The business department is headed by the publisher, and it has several sub-departments, each headed by a director.

First-time writers at Columbia begin their time at the paper with a 1- to 2-month training period, during which they learn the basics of writing an article and publish their first articles. When their department editor sees fit, they become staff writers. Each November and December, students run for positions at the paper, a grueling process that takes nearly a month. They begin by "shadowing," or sitting with the current editors or associate editors and learning the editing process. Next they write proposals for their desired position. The students then take an editing test made up by their department editor that tests them on the fundamentals of editing. Finally, they go through the "Turkey Shoot," an interview in which the current managing board grills the applicant on why he feels he would be a good fit for the position. The results of the application process, including the new managing board are announced in mid-December, the weekend before finals.

The Office of Alumni and Development (formerly known as University Development and Alumni Relations or UDAR) is an executive level operation, i.e. they answer directly to PrezBo without intermediaries. It currently does not have an Executive Vice President, after Fred Van Sickle left in spring 2014. It has a dual mission, as hinted by its name - cultivating a strong alumni base, and then getting their money. It can be argued that for a long time, Columbia skipped the first part of the equation.

They're at the top of the alumni relations and fundraising food chain at Columbia - all individual school and constituent offices answer to them. They are the force behind the Columbia Alumni Association, the Columbia Campaign, and they publish Columbia, the university's quarterly magazine for alumni.

Recent History
In 2010, Fred Van Sickle replaced Susan Feagin as the Executive Vice President. Van Sickle previously served as Feagin's right-hand-man and came with her to Columbia from the University of Michigan.

In 2009 UDAR rechristened itself as the Office of Alumni and Development (possibly) in honor of its move to the newly built Columbia Alumni Center in Hall.

Until 2005, UDAR had its own website, which served as the main 'Alumni Website' and highlighted its efforts on both fronts - development and relations. In 2005, Columbia Connections was launched as the new alumni website. During the summer of 2007, the website was rebranded and reorganized as the website of the Columbia Alumni Association, shortly after the launch of the Giving to Columbia website. Previously, the UDAR and Connections websites maintained a page which listed the options and directions for donating. This marked an unofficial bifurcation of the two pursuits.

In 2014, Van Sickle left the post after being appointed Chief Development Officer of the Institute for Advanced Study. As of April 2015, the EVP post is still vacant.

Alumni Relations
Although an Office of Alumni Relations had existed within UDAR, it wasn't until 2004 that it was elevated in importance when
Eric Furda was appointed to the newly created position of Vice President for Alumni Relations. Previously, a single VP handled both alumni relations and development.

Prior to Furda's appointment as VP, Alumni Relations focused on providing Alumni Benefits, and overseeing Regional Alumni Clubs, the Columbia University Alumni Federation, and the Alumni Travel Study Program.

Since taking over, Furda has overseen the launch of the Columbia Alumni Association, the Columbia Connections website, and effort to strengthen the Regional Alumni Clubs. The CAA has been the vehicle for kick-starting a number of alumni services and events.

Furda was succeded in 2008 by Donna MacPhee.

Development
The history of fundraising at Columbia is interesting, comical, and often forehead-slap worthy. However, with the launch of the Columbia Campaign, Columbia has stepped up it's efforts on the development front, laying the groundwork with the launch of the Columbia Alumni Association on the relations side first, and the launch during Summer of 2007 of the Giving to Columbia website, a quantum leap in it's web-based fundraising and awareness efforts.

Relationship with individual schools
While the Office of Alumni and Development is at the top of the fundraising and alumni relations food chain, it relies on each school's individual alumni and/or development offices to do a majority of the work engaging with alumni. The larger university-wide office typically does only programming that involves multiple schools (usually through the Columbia Alumni Association) or in different regions of the world (usually through the regional clubs). The Office of Alumni and Development, as a relatively new office, is still defining its role within the larger university; the lines are still a little blurry from time to time.

Notable individual school offices include:
*Columbia College Alumni Affairs and Development (CCAAD)
*Engineering Advancement (EDAR)
*General Studies Alumni and Development (GSAD)

It is important to note that both Barnard College and Teachers College maintain independent alumni operations, however they do collaborate on events through the Columbia Alumni Association.

The Columbia University Chinese Students and Scholars Association (official name: Columbia University Chinese Students and Scholars Association:
United for China's Peaceful Rising) is a student club, recognised and funded by the Student Governing Board.

Presence and mission
Prior to 2007, the CUCSSA included an "advisory board", which was, until recently, made up entirely of employees of a foreign nation's consulate. For that reason, the student club has been accused of being "an arm of the Chinese government" . After the shenanigans below, the club took on an OMA employee onto their board. The Chinese consulate officials dropped off shortly thereafter.

As of December, 2007, the CUCSSA appears to have revamped their web presence, possibly in realisation that the Cultural Revolution is over. They no longer identify themselves as "United for China's Peaceful Rising" (indeed, they appear to be in the middle of writing a new Constitution). Also gone are the dozens of pages of attacks on Falun Gong, replaced instead by exhortations to "[g]et started to outdoor activiety (sic) and enjoy all the fun" . Whether this is a genuine realisation that Mao is dead or just a Hundred Flowers-style trap to draw out imperialists and reactionaries into the open before they are served with peoples' justice to build a new motherland on the principles of socialist labour, peasants' rights, and resistance to foreigners and petty bourgeoise capitalism is yet to be seen.

Oddly enough, the CUCSSA's website appears to be blocked in mainland China. Who knows. Their antics have probably embarrassed the real Communist Party.

Falun Gong
Recent events and efforts of the club have centered around clashes with members of Falun Gong and with other members of the Columbia community. In fact, of the 10 items posted under "Lives in NYC" on the CUCSSA website, 9 of these 10 are attacks on Falun Gong. . Since it is a recognized group under the Student Governing Board, the organization appears to be a CU-funded arm of the Chinese Consulate focused on anti-Falun Gong manifestoes. And, during breaks from reprinting implausible copy from the Chinese Consulate, white water rafting.

De-recognition
In March 2015, various Chinese and English media outlets reported that the University de-recognized CUSSA (interestingly, no campus publication ran the story). A Columbia spokesperson gave Forbes the following quote: "Unfortunately, the ongoing violations of multiple financial and student organizational policies by CUCSSA persisted after the organization had been placed on probation, making the recent disciplinary action unavoidable."
Columbia has 3 undergraduate schools of its own and 1 affiliated college:
* Columbia College (CC), a coeducational liberal arts college of arts and sciences.
* School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), the engineering and applied sciences school, which is strongly integrated with CC
* School of General Studies (GS), the school for "nontraditional" students whose education has been interrupted and other students with unusual backgrounds, including students of JTS and UTS. GS students are generally older than those in CC and SEAS, have life experiences to match, and live in off-campus housing.
* Barnard College (BC), the women's college across the street from Columbia. It has an ambiguous relationship with Columbia and the three undergraduate schools. Barnard is an independent school in partnership with Columbia, and it has its own administration, faculty, student body, and campus. Columbia and Barnard students may take classes on both campuses, eat in each others' dining halls, and be part of each others' clubs and sports teams.

Wallach Hall is one of two residence halls that make up the Living Learning Center. It was originally known as Livingston Hall.

History
Construction on Wallach started in 1904 and was completed in 1905. Wallach is, along with its twin, Hartley Hall, the oldest dormitory on campus. While Hartley was funded by the most mic-drop senior class gift of all time, Wallach was built with University funds to match young Marcellus Dodge. Both are part of the original McKim, Mead, and White Master Plan. Wallach was originally named Livingston Hall, after Robert R. Livingston, a King's College alumnus active in the American Revolution and the Constitutional Convention. This is ironic because Robert Livingston's uncle, William Livingston, had led some of the most vociferous opposition to the formation of King's College.

The building was renamed after Columbia College alumnus Ira D. Wallach, who donated $2 million for the building to be completely renovated in 1979, despite the voiced displeasure of alumni. Appropriately, a $2 million gift from alumnus Jerome L. Greene funded a simultaneous renovation of Hartley, though Greene, unlike Wallach, bowed to sentiment and eventually requested that Hartley not be renamed.

Notable residents
*Hal Chase, Beat Generation member
*Jack Giorno, poet who was Andy Warhol's lover
*Jack Kerouac, Beat Generation author, who preferred it over Hartley because his room there was a single, had a view of South Field rather than Amsterdam Avenue, and had fewer cockroaches.

Description
Wallach, like Hartley, has both singles and doubles of various sizes. Singles range from 94 sq ft to 130 sq ft and doubles from 194 sq ft to 222 sq ft. The 9th floor has larger rooms, and the 10th floor is for the building CPA and his or her friends.

Rooms used to be priced according to size, and the spendthrifts would therefore nab all the bigger rooms. Wallach was then incorporated in the LLC. Students who want to live in the LLC must now complete an extensive application. If they are accepted, they are assigned a random lottery number. Students are then able to select an LLC room in order of seniority (senior, junior, sophomore), or if they have the same seniority, in order of lottery number. A large number of sophomores apply in the hope of getting a single, thus avoiding the harsh reality of the normal student's housing lottery.

Wallach, along with Hartley, is no longer especially popular among seniors due to all these complications.

Wallach was recently renovated, removing the suites and turning it into a pseudo-Furnald. Hardwood floors, nicer bathrooms, and a fresh coat of paint make it significantly more desirable than Hartley. The walls are still paper-thin though.

Despite what the Columbia Housing website said until recently, Wallach has no laundry room and residents must use either the one in Hartley (accessible through the tunnel in the basement) or the one in John Jay (also through the basement; especially recommended for B- and C-suite residents).
The CUID or Columbia University ID (not to be confused with the Cornell University ID) is the official ID card for Columbia students and faculty. It prominently features the ugly mug shot you sent in over the summer before your freshmen year unless you lose it and ask for a new shot with the replacement card. However, Alma Mater gets more real estate on the card than your face. Saving grace?

In the summer of 2007 Student Services announced that they would be rolling out new secure ID cards during the fall semester. As of August 13, 2007, all new cards issued by the ID center are the new cards.

Design
The first all-in-one CUID issued in 1996 featured a now rarely used version of the Columbia Crown. A subsequent design prominently featured Alma Mater. CUIDs issued during the 2003-2004 term also featured the ever-present CU250 branding crown on the ID. The design was discontinued at the end of that year. In 2007 the ID center switched designs again. Columbia University and affiliated institutions will be moving to identical ID design layouts, with each institution's card bearing a school-specific image on the left border of the card in addition to the school's name across the top.

In 2012, yet another new design was introduced "[t]o make the University ID card consistent with the current visual identity.". The changed only applied to the Morningside (and Manhattanville) campuses—CUMC, Barnard College, Teachers College, Union Theological Seminary and other affiliates were not affected.

Stickers
Several CUID functions require that you have one of several stickers on your ID. A valid term sticker is required for events like Passport to New York and entrance to the many museums in New York. Keep this term sticker up to date by getting a new one each term from the ID Center in 204 Kent Hall. If it peels off, go get a new one.

In addition, students living on campus will need a building sticker denoting their campus residence. This sticker allows guests to be signed in, and (in theory but never in practice) allows a resident to enter his or her building if the electronic swipe system is down. Replacement stickers can be obtained at the Hospitality Desk in the lobby of Hartley Hall.

Replacements
You can replace your ID by going to the ID Center on the lower level of Kent Hall. It's more easily accessed from College Walk than the upper campus level entrance of Kent.

Back when they had the old ID design, students would go on their 21st birthday to the ID Center and request an over-21 replacement ID and be issued a new ID for free with a bright red stripe where it says 'student.' There is no longer any evidence of age on the IDs.

Also, you can get a free replacement if your ID gets worn out.

Students returning to Columbia in a new program (e.g. coming back as a grad student) are expected to turn in their old ID Card or pay a $15 fee for their "replacement" new ID.

Payment functions
Secure Identity and Access Control Project
In 2004 the University created a task force to explore an overhaul of the CUID system in order to protect private information of students, such as their Social Security numbers which had once been the primary ID numbers embedded in the system, and allow the flexibility to use the system for off-campus purchasing. The University had been aware of the security problem since 2003.

With approval from the Trustees, the overhaul plan was announced in October of 2005 with a timeline calling for implementation by New Year's 2008. Shockingly, the University made its deadline, with complete overhaul completed by the end of 2007. The "Secure Identity and Access Control" project, a $6 million undertaking by Student Services (which oversees the ID Center), replaced SSNs with University-assigned randomized ID numbers. In addition, the new cards incorporate a magnetic wire allowing the University the option of replacing swipe boxes around campuses to "proximity boxes," which allow cardholders to tap instead of swiping.

The University will be overhauling its database system as well, allowing students to register guests online rather than in person.

Once all 80,000 students, faculty, and staff were issued new ID cards, the off-campus flex plan became feasible.

According to Lisa Hogarty, in 2007 the executive vice president of Student & Administrative Services, "What most universities have done is just taken the Social Security number off the card. Once we finish this project, Columbia will be best in class." Considering that Columbia was among the last Ivy schools to address the SSN-related security concerns, and that peer schools have had Flex type programs and proximity-box based access systems for years, the statement sounds a bit like self-congratulatory back-slapping and begs the question, "Well what the hell took so long?"

* Redeeming meal plans at John Jay Dining Hall and Hewitt Dining Hall.
* Paying with Dining Dollars at Dining Services on-campus dining locations and vending machines.
* Paying with Flex or Dining Dollars at the Columbia University Bookstores.
* Paying for laundry in the laundry rooms of the CC/SEAS residence halls.

Access privileges
* Your CUID used to function as an over-21 ID on campus.
* Swiping into Columbia's restricted access buildings. Depending on your privileges, these may include CC/SEAS residence halls, Dodge Physical Fitness Center, and the libraries.
* Signing friends into your own residence hall, but not any others.
* Swiping into Lerner Hall.
* Swiping into IAB, at any hour of day or night. This is convenient to access the many IAB vending machines, or to take a shortcut to East Campus or Wien when you're walking south on Amsterdam Avenue.
* Getting into most of the major New York City museums for free via Passport to New York.
* Getting into Bobst Library at NYU.
* Getting into all Columbia athletics events for free.

What it's not good for
* Swiping into Barnard College dormitories, unless you live in one, like Plimpton.
* Getting into academic buildings, except IAB, at night unless you have special access
* Getting you laid.
