The Philolexian Society is one of the oldest collegiate literary societies in the United States, and the oldest student group at Columbia. It is known primarily for its witty debates, unabashedly anachronistic air, and pretensions to pseudo-intellectualism and faux-erudition.

The society aims to "improve its members in Oratory, Composition and Forensic Discussion". The name Philolexian is Greek for "Lover of discourse," and the society's motto is the Latin word "Surgam", meaning "I shall rise". The society publishes a literary journal of the same name twice a year.

It has many famous alumni and an excellent website.

History
The Society was founded on May 17, 1802. Originally, freshmen were barred from entry, and to satisfy them, the Peithologian Society was founded four years later. For a century, these two societies would be rivals, until Peitholgian ceased to exist after the turn of the century. After maintaining a continuous existence for over 130 years, Philolexian succumbed to periods of intermittent dormancy over the next 20 years, thanks to a combination of administrative interference, the Great Depression, and student apathy following an internal power struggle. In the 1930s, for example, society president Ralph de Toledano noted that the group was almost exclusively devoted to drinking wine and listening to jazz. Although a postwar incarnation included such distinguished names as Allen Ginsberg, John Hollander, Jason Epstein, and Robert Butler, Philolexian effectively ceased to function in the early 1950's. The society was revived once in the 1960s by Ben Stein and others, largely as an adjunct to Alpha Delta Phi, but the effort failed to take hold. In 1985 Philolexian was reconvened again by six students and has been active ever since. The leader of the most recent revival, Thomas Vinciguerra, is now known as "the Avatar".

Activities
Beyond its weekly debating sessions, the Society administers the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Bad Poetry Contest. It also hosts a Beat Night, reading poetry of the Beat Generation aloud on The Steps, and holds an annual Croquet Tea on Mathematics Lawn, in which members appear in 19th century costume. Recently, Philo has attempted to broaden its range of activities, having hosted a human chess match on the Steps and tea with members of the University faculty, as well as co-sponsoring a book club event during Queer Awareness Month. We, even more recently, have begun having a twice annual, themed, Murder Mystery Night. As well as a Beat Tour, a love letter writing workshop and a dramatic reading of members' our middle school repertoire.

Prizes and Contests
In addition to the Kilmer Bad Poetry contest, Philo is involved with three other campus prizes and contests. The Philolexian Centennial Washington Prize oratory contest is conducted once every four years by the Society, and in 2011 the society helped conduct the George William Curtis Medal oratory contest, after Columbia forgot to hold it the previous year. The Philolexian Prize, one of the oldest endowed student prizes at Columbia, oddly, was previously awarded by the English Department without any collaboration with the Society, but now is back under our purview and we will award it with great care and prestige.

Past debate resolutions
* Resolved: Having an embarrassing name is worse than having an embarrassing face

James J. Valentini is a professor of Chemistry at Columbia and the sixteenth and current Dean of Columbia College. He assumed the responsibilities of the deanship and of the position of Vice President for Undergraduate Education after Michele M. Moody-Adams resigned in the summer of 2011.

He's popularly known as Deantini after a Bwog naming competition, and was previously known by his initials JJV to many of his students.

Student from more recent class years have expressed concerns about the apparent 'cult of personality' that has developed around Valentini as a dean, given Valentini's lack of accessibility to students (except for positive photo-ops and through mass-email).

Academic career
Valentini grew up in a small town in Appalachia and was the first in his family to attend college, graduating from the University of Pittsburgh as valedictorian. He received a master's degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago and a doctorate in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley, after which he completed a postdoc at Harvard. First a professor at the University of California, Irvine, he has been a member of the Columbia faculty since 1991.

In 2009, Valentini was selected by his peers as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and earlier as a fellow of the American Physical Society for his research involving chemical reaction dynamics.

He generally teaches Organic Chemistry and leads a small seminar on chemistry for high school students as well. In 2009, he created a small seminar for non-science majors on energy conservation and general energy principles. The course was designed to fulfill the science requirement of the Core.

Administrative roles
Valentini has served in a number of administrative roles since joining the faculty. He served as chair of Columbia's Chemistry Department from 2005 to 2008 and was later the directer of the Chemistry Department’s undergraduate studies program. He has also served as chair of the Committee on Science Instruction for several years, and therefore represented both Frontiers of Science and the science requirement to the Committee on the Core Curriculum until assuming the deanship in 2011. He also served on Columbia College's Committee on Instruction, and was a member of the committee that selected Michele Moody-Adams after Austin Quigley stepped down.

Deantini is widely popular among the students for his "aw-shucks" demeanor and general good cheer/friendliness. Around finals he'll often distribute chocolates around Butler Library. At Commencement 2013, some Columbia College student leapt up to crown him with one of the blue inflatable plastic crowns.

Personal life
Valentini married Teodolinda Barolini, the current chair of the Italian Department, in 2001. They met while serving on the executive committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1994. Notably, closer oversight by Arts and Sciences of Columbia College was one of the rumored causes of Moody-Adams' resignation.

The Panhellenic Council (Panhel) is the self-governing student organization that provides guidelines and support to the sororities it represents. Panhel consists of organizations with national membership in the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). Each organization is represented at Panhel Meetings to discuss and vote on matters concerning member organizations and the Greek community. Panhellenic assists in establishing guidelines for membership recruitment, service opportunities, and social activities for NPC sorority members.

The Panhellenic Council is a member of the larger Intergreek Council, which is one of the five governing boards recognized and funded by the student councils.

Executive Board
2015-2016
*President: Roberta Barnett
*VP Recruitment: Emily Hollender
*VP Communications: Madison Jacox
*VP Programming: Nora Jaquemet
*VP Finance: Hannah Hussamy
*VP PR and Marketing: Brittany Beljak

2014-2015
*President: Jessica Chi
*VP Recruitment: Sienna Walker
*VP Communications: Elina Bystritskaya
*VP Programming: Mara Schwartz
*VP Finance: Veronica Zhai
*VP PR and Marketing: Rachel Schlosser
*VP Extension: Christene Anene

Represented Organizations
National Panhellenic Conference Sororities
*Alpha Chi Omega (AXO)
*Alpha Omicron Pi (AOII)
*Delta Gamma (DG)
*Gamma Phi Beta (Gamma Phi)
*Kappa Alpha Theta (Theta)
*Sigma Delta Tau (SDT)

Recruitment
Recruitment for sororities represented by Panhel is differet than recruitment for the other two Greek governing boards in the Inter Greek Council. For recruitment, certain members of each of the five represented sororities are required to disaffiliate for the recruitment period. Any student wishing to join one of the five sororities must attend a series of events organized by Panhel's recruitment committee, and at the end of the events, each potential new member receives a bid from a sorority.

Bwog, originally called The Bwog, started its existence as the blog of The Blue and White magazine, but has since then developed a life of its own separate from the magazine. Centered on campus news and gossip, it was launched on January 30th, 2006, by founding editor Taylor Walsh. The site was inspired by gossip blogs that began to be popular in New York in the mid-00s, especially Gawker. Some consider it to be snotty and elitist. Others consider it witty and entertaining. Most people read it regardless. It's generally understood that Bwog was great last year but now it sucks, regardless of the current year.

History
Although it had already been active for months, Bwog went mainstream in October 2006 with its nearly real-time coverage of the Minuteman stage-rush incident, which did for it what the Gulf War did for CNN - made students realize that the blog medium, and Bwog in particular, was their most up to date source of campus news. A popular sister blog launched in 2008 to cover the exploits of Hawkmadinejad. The site has undergone three serious redesigns since inception, notably on January 1, 2009 and September 22, 2012. Both designs were met with immediate backlash from readers, but just like Facebook, eventually people stop complaining and continue using the site.

In 2010, the site celebrated its 100,000th entry comment. That same year, the site moved from Bwog.net to Bwog.com, for unclear reasons.

Common Features
*Breaking news
*Bwoglines
*Coverage of protests / major campus events
*LectureHops / RoomHops / OfficeHops / PeopleHops
*Things overheard on campus
*Student council meetings coverage that maybe 3 people read
*Event listings
*Rodent coverage
*Free food announcements, far too close to the event time to be of any use
*Internet culture features
*BwogSex
*On-campus theater reviews
*Comments, with a reputation for being caustic and asinine
*Senior Wisdom
*Actual Wisdom
*BwogWeather

Unlike Spec, Bwog stays active and running during finals. They immediately regretted that decision but such is life.

Publication
Despite what Columbia might insinuate, Bwog is not officially affiliated with the school--the organization does not get support or funding in any form from the university. It is an independent blog that the administration (often begrudgingly) acknowledges. It is completely student-run and managed, supported financially by ad sales.
