The Engineering Student Council (ESC) represents the interests of undergraduate students in SEAS. Not to be confused with the Engineering Graduate Student Council.

Composition
The ESC consists of three parts: the executive board, the class councils, and the representatives-at-large.

Executive board
* President: Organizes and runs meetings; chief advocate for SEAS student body
* VP Policy: Pursues policy changes; heads policy subcommittee
* VP Finance (née Intergroup): Treasurer of the council; heads co-sponsorship subcommittee
* VP Student Life: Plans campus-wide events for SEAS; heads subcommittee responsible for event planning
* VP Communications: Responsible for all communication and media relations of entire undergraduate engineering population; heads communication committee

Class Councils
* Senior Class Council: Consists of a president, vice-president, and 2 representatives from the senior class.
* Junior Class Council: Consists of a president, vice-president, and 2 representatives from the junior class.
* Sophomore Class Council: Consists of a president, vice-president, and 2 representatives from the sophomore class.
* First-Year Class Council: Consists of a president, vice-president, and 2 representatives from the freshman class.

Representatives at large
* University Senator (1): Fully elected member of the University Senate, although the SEAS undergraduate senator sits ex officio on the ESC, he/she does not report to the ESC, nor does the ESC exercise any statutory or governance authority over any element whatsoever of the University Senate or its elected members.
* Academic Affairs Rep: Works with VP for Policy to pursue policy changes to academic life.
* Student Services Rep: Works with VP for Policy to pursue policy changes to student services such as housing and dining.
* Alumni and Pre-Professional Affairs Rep: Works with CCE to plan events geared towards career/internships. Also works with Columbia Engineering Alumni Association to plan events related to alumni and student interaction.
* Combined Plan "3-2" Representative: Created in 2013, advocates for the 3-2 population.
* Director of Technology: Created in 2008; handles ESC website.

Liaisons
The ESC has three official liaison positions to the other undergraduate student councils, with one liaising to CCSC, GSSC, and SGA. In 2010, the council added the position of Sustainability Liaison to liaise with Green Umbrella.

Co-sponsorships
See Joint Council Co-Sponsorship Committee. The large majority of ESC co-sponsorships are run through the JCCC, though other events may be co-sponsored by ESC or its constituent class councils.

In Fall 2013, ESC introduced ESC Project Grants, which are "grants aimed at promoting engineering spirit through engineering projects". Seven student teams were awarded up to $1000 each to work on their own extracurricular engineering projects.

Elections
Since time immemorial, ESC internally elected executive board members, including the president. This was the subject of much controversy over the years, as the election rules can only be altered during the annual constitutional review. Several council members proposed amendments calling for direct elections, but none were approved. Several years ago, someone accused the ESC of being insular and that it was only electing current council members to E-board positions. The ESC was also widely criticized by campus news sources such as Bwog and Spectator for holding internal elections.

In 2011, ESC voted during its annual constitutional review to approve direct elections of its executive board. It was decided the first-such elections would take place in 2012, as time was needed to draft election rules for these positions. Tim Qin SEAS '13 became the first ESC President to be elected by the undergraduate engineering student body.

In 2013, ESC voted during constitutional review to have its elections run by a centralized elections board.

It costs $22 per person, unless you have your CUID, in which case it costs $18 to enter. On Saturdays, the museum offers "Pay What You Wish" admission from 5:45–7:45pm.
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the bright white cylindrical structure contrasts its surrounding environment.

A fire alarm is an event that is traditionally slept through at Columbia. It is a loud and annoying occurrence.

Sometimes, though, the firemen that rove the halls after each alarm will catch you. Given the small number of people who actually exit the building, it's surprising they don't do this more often.

Some time after each has occurred and been forgotten, the residents of the building involved will receive a letter indicating the cause, usually one or another floor/suite's poor cooking skills.

If your building has roof access that is blocked by an alarmed door, fire drills are a great time to go up there without triggering an alarm (because one is already going off!), make sure to block the door with something so your friends get up to the roof and so you don't trigger the alarm when you leave the roof.

If you are in John Jay, Hartley, or Wallach during a fire drill, you don't have to go outside, just walk over to the other building.
It is on the south-east corner of 113th St and Broadway. It is sometimes known as 'Carman 2' because it is full of sophomores and the social atmosphere is similar to Carman.

Doubles in the McBain shaft are considered to be among the worst rooms at Columbia. They are typically selected as 'blind' doubles in General Selection. They range from 195 to 209 sq ft. Due to the shaft, they have no views, and are hot, noisy, and dark. The 06 and 25 lines are especially bad because they only have one small window.

A cat (cats?) lives here. McBain also goes by the names of McBizz, McBizzle, and McPain.

History
Built in 1908 to a design by Naville and Bagge, the building operated as the Yorkshire Hotel and then the Yorkshire Residence Club. In 1964, it was bought by Columbia and converted into a residence hall.

In 2011, The Penthouse Club, the most epic party in both McBain and Columbia's history, was thrown. A revival of the Penthouse Party is rumored for the spring of 2013.

Famous residents
*Meghan McCain

Facilities
* Computer lab
* Laundry rooms on floors 2, 3, 4, and 5
* RA Rooms: 213, 301, 419, 514, 519, 619, 719, 819
* Rider Rooms 216, 334, 429, 529, 629, 729, 829

Rooms
* 43 singles (17 available in general selection)
* 174 doubles

Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
* Many exterior doubles are large and have nice views
* Great walk-through doubles in the corners of the building
* Located near the Broadway restaurants and shops
* <s>19 line is a 174 sq ft single</s> This is usually the RA room
* <s>04 line is a 140 sq ft single</s> Converted to doubles
* <s>10 line is a 331 sq ft corner double</s> No longer true because of remodeling. This line is now a 210 sq ft double
* 22 line is a 269 sq ft double
* Exercise machines in the lounge are open for use 24-7
* Computer lab with 6 computers is likely to meet all of your IT needs
* 2nd floor is renovated and is on par with Broadway
* <b> Room 805 </b> must be set up like a spaceship for roof access. On your way up the fire escape, pause on the second landing and look due north east for a stunning view of Alma peeking in between Lerner and Butler. Keep an eye out for Broadway onlookers once you make it up though.

Disadvantages
* Two elevators, but both are very slow
* Noisy
* The rooms on the shaft often have no light or fresh air, and have terrifyingly close views of one another
* Computer lab printer almost never works (but CUIT has evidently been more diligent, because the printer service has been improving). Rumors exist that CUIT will install another printer over the summer in 2012.
* Mice can slip under the door into room
* Cockroaches and other bed bugs
* A couple of the ceilings collapsed

Ruggles suites 708-714 and 808-814 were renovated during the summer of 2006. All suites on the northern half of the building were renovated in Summer 2007, with the remaining southern suites being renovated in Summer 2008. As of Fall 2008, every suite had been completely renovated, including new furniture, new hardwood floors, and increased lounge space.

Most 4-person suites go to seniors. In the past, most 8-person suites had gone to sophomores and mixed-class groups, but a recent upswing in popularity following its 2006 renovations has resulted in the majority of the 8-person suites being snatched up by all-junior or junior and senior suites. A group point value of over twenty is needed to have a good shot at an 8-person suite.

History
Built in 1908 to a design by Neville and Bagge, Ruggles was originally the Arizona Hotel. In 1964, the university purchased it and converted it into a graduate residence. It was later made into undergraduate housing.

Bad stuff that's happened here:
*Ruggles murder-suicide of 2000 in room 509
*Ruggles vandalization incident of 2006

Suites
* 8 4-person suites
* 8 5-person suites (previously 4-person suites)
* 1 1st floor 6-person suites
* 12 8-person suites with 2 singles and 3 doubles
* 2 8-person suites with 4 singles and 2 doubles

Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
* A short walk to JJ's Place, the John Jay Dining Hall, Butler Library, and Hamilton Hall. Strokos is practically next door
* Parties more feasible than you'd think
* Weekly cleaning of common areas
* High floors have access to the roof. Actually going up there is prohibited, but rarely enforced unless a lot of people are there
* Decent soundproofing between rooms
* Newly renovated basement

Disadvantages
* Exposed pipes
* Poor temperature regulation
* Slow single elevator that sometimes gets stuck between floors
* You have to take your garbage to the basement yourself
* No stair access to basement
* Many rooms exposed to nighttime noise on Frat Row which is really noisy in the mornings due to delivery trucks and parking garage.
* You have to swipe open the entrance door only to be swiped again by a guard
* Roof door alarm rings incessantly because Public Safety never comes to turn it off. Especially a problem during storms, when the door is blown open constantly. Currently (September 2009), the door hinge is broken, and hence is not closeable, meaning residents of the 7th and 8th floors are subjected to incessant and wall-penetrating alarm bells. When the door will be fixed is unknown.
* Some of the rooms are inhumanely small, including an 85 sq. ft. single on the 4th floor

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, more commonly known as the Guggenheim, is a museum on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

The art in here is pretty weird compared to more tame museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In Fall 2014, ESC introduced ESC Project Grants, which are "grants aimed at promoting engineering spirit through engineering projects".
