Kent Hall, home of the MEALAC and EALAC departments, is named after James Kent, Columbia's first law professor. It was originally built to house Columbia's law school, and served that purpose from 1910 to 1960, when the Law School moved across Amsterdam Avenue to the more spacious, yet ugly Jerome Greene Hall. During that time it served as a focal point for the growing movement to admit women to the law school. It was not until 1927 that women were said to have "crossed the threshold of Kent Hall".

Above the doorway is the latin inscription "IVS EST ARS BONI ET AEQUI" - "Law is the art of the good and the just."

The campus level (3rd Floor) library, now the C.V. Starr East Asian Library, was once the Law Library, and the stained glass window on the east side of the Library is a clear relic of that bygone era.

Currently, the building is home to the departments of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures, and Creative Writing.

It has one elevator, which is horrifyingly slow and subject to breaking. On its ground floor, accessible from College Walk, Kent also serves as the home of Student Services and several of its offices, including Student Financial Services, the University Registrar, and the ID Center. The offices seamlessly extend through Kent into Philosophy Hall, which are connected by ground level tunnel.

Tunnel connections
Philosophy Hall
All tunnels connect to the sub-basement, which is accessed by going down the west staircase all the way to the bottom, turning left, and going through the door. It is missing a knob but it isn't locked so just use your finger to open it. Go to the east end of the basement, and you will see a well-lit, fairly clean corridor. Go north and it will be on your right. "Access route" is painted in a blue stripe on the ground. This continues on to St. Paul's, Avery, and beyond in that direction. This might be legal, but just in case, go at night so you don't run into maintenance. There is a very light security risk.

Hamilton Hall
Go to the Philosophy tunnel, but go south instead. This tunnel goes under 116th street (college walk) and ends up in the basement of Hamilton. It is blocked later on so that is as far as can you go. This might be legal, but just in case, go at night so you don't run into maintenance. There is a very light security risk.

St. Paul's Chapel
This tunnel used to be the student rifle range. In the basement, go up the random concrete staircase in the middle of the north wall. It is very dark - if you ever wanted to see perfect darkness, this is pretty close. Remember the caver's rule: bring 3 sources of light. Even a cell phone's screen will work in an emergency. I imagine if you dug around down here you might find some bullets. The end of the tunnel reconnects with the Kent tunnel system through the door marked "Organ Pump Room" or something of that nature. You have to get through a small metal hatch to get to that door from the rifle range. That room is full of decades-old machinery and a big defunct pump. The small room at the end holds Sir Lance's rolodex, placed there by the LTV Squad. Bring a pen to sign it.

Students are not permitted on this route. It's very dark, but there's very little risk that security will find you. This tunnel is cool, unlike the ungodly hot one next to it. You need to be a little flexible to get through the small hatch. One of Benoit's tours left tags down here on the pipes. Two people or more is highly recommended.

Buell Hall
Climb up the ladder in the NW corner of the basement into the hatch. It's really only a dead-end; there is no exit from Buell. If you were to continue past Buell northwards you would get blocked at a hot mass of pipes, beyond which are connections to Uris Hall, Low Library, and St. Paul's Chapel.

There are no alarms or cameras. This is probably the most physically dangerous passage on campus. You are in a passage that is 5 1/2 feet tall, with scalding-hot water dripping from uninsulated steam pipes all around you. There are no lights, muddy pitted floors, and exposed electrical wires. Not to mention the heat and humidity - it is unbearably hot (>100F) and moist (100%). The air is thick with dust (and probably asbestos too). There is no one to hear your screams if you are hurt. You could rot for years down here without being found. I guarantee that no maintenance person has been here in decades. There is virtually no risk of being caught. However, it's very dangerous, so only go there if you're an experienced tunnel explorer. Go in a group, wear protective clothing, bring multiple sources of light, bring water to drink, and tell people where you're going so they can get help if you don't return.

Attic
The attic is easily accessible through the east stairwell. It is dark, spooky, and dirty. There is evidence that people use it as a space for drinking, smoking, and other illicit activity.

Photos
Image:Kentbasementsmall.jpg|Kent basement circa 1940. Note the rifle range.
Image:Kentsubbasementsmall.jpg|Kent sub-basement circa 1940. You can see all the tunnels here except for the really hot Buell one.
A note on finding old material on Bwog
I know the that Bwog archives are a mess, but I figured out a way to better navigate them this week. Say that you only have an old, old link without a slug (e.g., one that includes "publicate" and ends with a number, e.g. "3113"), you can use the short-link system to find it. Just take the number after "publicate" and put it into the short link: "bwog.com/?p=[number]".

Also: if you're looking at an old post, but the link to the picture is broken, you can find it. Here is how. Say the link is "http://bwog.com/uploads/whoohoo.jpg". Gives you a 404. Now insert "images." before "bwog.com" and "wp-content/" before "uploads". That gives you "http://images.bwog.com/wp-content/uploads/whoohoo.jpg," which does work. Good for finding old party pics, pretty much anything from '06 through '09. cds2148 16:49, 4 July 2013 (EDT)
Which she ended up getting to do after that townhall. (Also, N.B. the page for the New York Sun.) cds2148 21:29, 4 June 2013 (EDT)
Thoughts on cataloging student websites
So Columbia students have a history of starting websites for the columbia community. A handful have survived more than a few years (CULPA being the great grand-daddy, and at this point I'd even put WikiCU in that category. It's been just over 6 years and we're not dead yet); most have died. Of those that died, some had an impact on campus life (CUCommunity, and Dogears.net come to mind, and CUSnacks featured prominently in a Varsity Show plot), while others seem to come and go without ever getting much traction (Hungrycu seems to have fallen into that crack. CampusPlaybook? PostATime? Buzzable? CUEats? CampusBoxOffice? Columbia Classes?) I guess what I'm getting at is whether each and every one of these projects deserves it own page (Notability!), which is the direction we've gone in so far, or maybe I/we should just come up with a single article chronicling Columbia students' ingenuity, with individual articles only for 'major' sites. Thoughts? Absentminded 16:32, 3 May 2013 (EDT)
:We could do both? An overview page detailing what you just said, plus individual pages for websites people care to create pages for. Admin 05:39, 4 May 2013 (EDT)
::That is basically what has been done so far. The notable ones usually get their own pages; for the others, we had the blogs page, which could conceivably be expanded to encompass other types of websites. Pacman 18:35, 13 May 2013 (EDT)
:::I got distracted by other stuff... It appears that there's a thing called the [Application Development Institute now. gotta figure out how to tie all that in. Absentminded 18:49, 13 May 2013 (EDT)
Editors' Message Board
*So I think we should create some kind of page to use as a 'message board' of sorts where editors can post things for other editors, or check in for news. For example, I see someone has tried to start a discussion about the Notability standard at Talk:Notability but if you didn't look at recent changes today, you might not know. I'm not really familiar with wiki back-end and management, so I'm not sure what the best way to do that is (and we're using the Community Portal for something else). But I think that would be a good step towards maintaining the momentum from 2013 Columbia Wikithon. Let me know what you (and others) think. I'll try to flag down a few other people so they know I've posted this (the fact that I need to go post on individual talk pages neatly demonstrates the issue I'm talking about). Absentminded 01:01, 30 April 2013 (EDT)

*On this similar note, is there a place where we can find the earliest articles created so that they can be refreshed. Ad2397 09:52, 30 April 2013 (EDT)

*OK I've created this page: WikiCU:Editors bulletin board. Maybe we can put a link to this on the main page, the community portal, maybe the welcome link?
* Hey Cds. I'm a new user and I just added Empire State University and wanted to ask if it fit with the goal of the wiki. I was also considering starting a How I Met Your Mother article and cataloguing all the references / shots from Columbia as I watched the show. Thoughts? Rkuykendall
:Hello! First off, sign your posts on talk pages with four tildes in a row to add your name and a timestamp (four of these: "~").

:As for Empire State University, fictional portrayals of CU are within the goal of the wiki (not that I am the arbiter of that). Columbia references in HIMYM would also be cool.
The Northwest Corner Building (known previously as the Interdisciplinary Science Building, and Northwest Science Building before that, and casually as NoCo) was destined by Columbia to fill the last remaining plot on the Morningside Heights campus. It was built over the Levien Gym, between Pupin Hall and the Havemeyer extension (Chandler Hall), as well as the last undeveloped portion of the Grove just north of Levien and west of Pupin. The project started on 19 March 2007 and first occupancy began in 2009.

Building description
The building is on the southeast corner of Broadway and 120th St, opposite Barnard's Diana Center. It is considerably taller than neighboring Pupin and Chandler Halls, though it still connects to them via pedestrian bridges at multiple levels, similar to those connecting Pupin, CEPSR, and Mudd.

The 188,000 square foot building features a campus lobby, entrance to Levien Gym, Joe the Art of Coffee cafe, the Science and Engineering Library, a large lecture hall, several classrooms, faculty and administrative offices, and 7 floors of science and engineering laboratories.

Design
The lead architect was José Rafael Moneo, selected by Bollinger for his "extreme sensitivity to context". To that end, Moneo designed a building shorter than would have been allowed at the site and hid mechanicals that would have otherwise been stored on the roof.

The Northwest Corner Building was designed by Moneo along with New York-based Davis Brody Bond. Upon its opening, it was certified as LEED Gold.

The building announced a departure from the McKim, Mead and White architecture that dominates many of the original campus buildings, and which served as the master plan for the campus since 1896. It does not, however, operate as a quick-fix in the architectural vein of Uris, Mudd or even CEPSR that lacked a significant architectural statement in hopes of placating a need for space.

A significant hurdle in the design was attempting not to interrupt with Levien Gym. As noted in an article in the New York Times, the design consists of "three enormous parallel trusses in the lower part of the building. These take the weight of the laboratories, classrooms and offices above and distribute the load — almost as a tabletop would — to columns that flank, but do not penetrate, the basketball court."

This approach has created a column-free space directly under the trusses, which is occupied by the library. The room is almost transparent, with window walls overlooking the campus and Broadway. “For the first time, actual academic life will be visible from the street,” said Mark Wigley, dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

Diagonal elements in the truss work and other structural bracing are expressed clearly on the facade, giving the building its overall character.

In other words, it does not look like the red-brick buildings that have dominated since McKim, Mead, and White drew up the master plan in the 1890s. But with so much steel in the science building, any brickwork would merely have been a thin cladding.

It should be noted that the Astronomy Department lodged significant complaints about the building, as it now blocks out 2/3 of the nighttime sky, rendering the observatory atop Pupin more or less useless.

Construction challenges
Bollinger also stipulated that the building show a commitment to embracing interdisciplinary science. In this vein, the building is insulated to reduce the impact of vibrations from the subway on the laboratory spaces. This has proven especially useful in some of the labs working on nanotechnology (like graphene), where even the slightest vibrations can disrupt experiments.

The greatest challenge facing the building's construction was the mandate it be built atop the school's underground gym, with no interruption in the gym's usability. In the 1970s, when Dodge Fitness Center was built, the Levien Gym was fitted with 4 super-columns at its corners, which would allow a building to be constructed above it without pesky additional columns. The Northwest Science Building was constructed on these super-columns, thus placing no weight on the Levien Gym roof, allowing it to remain open. Nevertheless, Moneo still had to employ truss construction to keep the building "floating" over the gym rather than resting on top of it, ensuring the basketball season could continue through construction.

In a lecture on campus in June 2012, lead architect Jeffrey Brock joked that with enough people, one could have "pushed" the building onto Broadway due to this "floating" construction. Probably not something you say aloud.

History of the site
Tennis courts occupied the site for decades prior to construction. At one point in the 1960s, it was proposed as the home of a new Life Sciences Building, but was abandoned in favor of the other side of campus, where Fairchild was built.

The Northwest Corner Building was the source of the Athletics Facilities Scandal. In the early 1990s, the Athletics Department proposed an extension of Dodge for the site that would hold a teaching swimming pool, racquetball courts, and an international squash court. When the Athletics Director at the time, John Reeves, was unable to raise any money for construction, it was decided to use the site for a science building with a few floors for athletics. But when President Bollinger took office, Reeves's boss, Provost Jonathan Cole, "forgot" to tell PrezBo about the the plans. Cole decided to build a science-only building instead, without informing Reeves of the change in plan. Reeves found out when the Spectator broke the news about the building in 2004.

Building Name
When news of the building broke in 2004, the project was referred to as the Northwest Science Building. Shortly thereafter Interdisciplinary Science Building was adopted as the name for the project in order to reflect the building's purpose and function. However, in Fall 2009 the school renamed the project yet again to Northwest Corner Building, "in the hopes of attracting a wider array of donors."
