Are the terms "South Lawn" and "South Field" interchangeable, or was "South Field" only used before Baker became the athletics center? Pacman 14:53, 3 April 2007 (EDT)
:South Lawn appears to be the official term: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lernerhall/graphics/outdoorspace.swf South Field may have been related to when the field was in one piece. We should probably add articles for the rest of those spaces? Maybe even incorporate this map somehow. It's a nifty piece of flash. anyway to embed it in an article? Absentminded 15:42, 3 April 2007 (EDT)
::Not sure how, but that's a great resource. The open space outside EC is "Ancel Plaza"? Who knew? Anyway there's a list waiting to be populated under Lawn. Pacman 15:48, 3 April 2007 (EDT)
:::Well, there's also this Outdoor spaces map. I don't know if it's fair to call it a "plaza". Ancel is more like a "barren wasteland."
::::Ach, it would be nice if those Google maps had at least a hint of where our campus is (lets alone building outlines). Anyway, Ancel is good for cricketeers, at least. Pacman 16:05, 3 April 2007 (EDT)
:I don't think there's any way to incorporate that Flash animation. However, I think I might rework the outdoor spaces map along the lines of this map: Map of campuses. Reaganaut 16:13, 3 April 2007 (EDT)
:Be careful linking to material from the Lerner site; we're redoing that whole site now. Moph 09:34, 5 April 2007 (EDT)

Housing Services, formerly University Residence Halls (URH), administers undergraduate housing for CC/SEAS. It is based at 125 Wallach Hall. Headed up by Herman Matte, Executive Director, who reports to Scott Wright.

Residence halls
Overview
Columbia has 17 undergraduate residence halls in an area bounded by Riverside Drive, Morningside Drive, 113th St, and 119th St. The residence halls accommodate 5,200 beds. First-year students usually live in one of the residence halls situated around South Lawn: Hartley, Wallach, John Jay, Furnald, or Carman. Upperclass students may also live in Hartley and Wallach, which are collectively part of the Living and Learning Center (LLC), through a highly selective application process. Other upperclassmen participate in a housing lottery. Rising sophomores may also live in Furnald if their lottery numbers are good enough. The other upperclassmen students can choose, in order of class seniority and a random lottery number, among Broadway, East Campus, 47 Claremont, Hogan, McBain, River, Ruggles, Schapiro, 600 W 113th St, Watt, Wien, and Woodbridge. The best housing options, usually only available to seniors, are considered to be a townhouse in East Campus or a suite in Hogan. Seniors with the very best lottery numbers can get their own studio apartment in Watt.

In addition to the 17 dormitories, Housing also oversees the Columbia-owned Brownstones on 114th and 113th street ("Frat Row") which are occupied by Fraternities, Sororities, and Special Interest Communities. The only Frat Row brownstone not owned by Columbia is the Beta Theta Pi house.

List of residence halls
Room Selection
Rising sophomores, rising juniors, and rising seniors select their rooms in the annual Room Selection process, also known as the Housing Lottery. In deciding where to live, you should consider housing factors, and also housing strategies that may help you in the room selection process.
* University Registrar
* Student Financial Services

Most concerns related to Student Services can be addressed in one of three places:
The Student Service Center in 205 Kent Hall (for billing, registration, transcript and related issues)
The Hospitality Desk in Hartley Hall Lobby (for housing and dining issues)
Health Services, in John Jay

Students may also have occasion to visit the University Event Management offices on the 7th floor of Lerner.

Student Services also operates Student Services Online (SSOL), the website used to register for classes, check bills, add money to dining and flex, check grades, check financial aid, and check degree progress, among other services.

Student Services also has a very useful FAQ website, Ask Us, with information on the topics of Billing & Payments, Tuition & Fees, Registration, Transcripts & Grades, ID Card, and Personal Information.
:Wait a minute- Hartley hall can't have been the firs undertaking to house students at a university. McCaughey clearly states that Columbia's commuter status was a major difference between it and other colonial-era founded schools. Columbia's official color's are "Columbia Blue" and white. Both colors were originally drawn from the two literary societies that were at the heart of student life in the 19th century: Philolexian Blue, and Peithologian White.

The current Philolexian Society (unrelated to the earlier group, save in name) maintains, in mock indignation, the position that the colors were in fact stolen.
