The '''Columbia Queer Alliance (CQA)''', the oldest [[w:LGBTQ|LGBTQ]] student organization in the world, is the central [[Columbia]] student organization that represents the lesbian, gay, transgender, and questioning student population. Its original name was the '''Student Homophile League (SHL)'''.

==Founder==
As an openly homosexual student, [[Robert Anthony Martin, Jr.]], pseudonym [[Stephen Donaldson]], [[CC]] '[[1970|70]] ([[July 27]], [[1946]] – [[July 18]], [[1996]]) was told by Columbia administrators that he would be allowed to register only "on condition that he undergo psychotherapy and not attempt to seduce other students."<ref name="eisenbach">[[David Eisenbach]] (2006). ''Gay Power: An American Revolution''. New York, NY: Carroll & Graf, 51-79, 260-262. ISBN 0786716339.</ref> His first year of college was difficult: he met no other gay students or faculty and had to move from a shared suite to a single room when his suitemates "told the college dean [[David Truman]] that they felt uncomfortable living with a homosexual".<ref name="eisenbach" />

After his [[1970]] graduation from Columbia, Donaldson enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In [[1971]], the Navy announced its intention to release him by General Discharge on grounds of suspected homosexual involvement. From [[1974]] to [[1977]], Donaldson was the Chair of the [[Student Governing Board]]. On [[July 18]], 1996, Donaldson died of AIDS-related illness.

==History==
The original organization had twelve members, who fought with the Columbia administration for a year before their organization was officially recognized. Columbia refused to recognize the SHL because a public membership was required, and the only gay members willing to provide their names were Stephen Donaldson and [[James Millham]]. Eventually, Stephen Donaldson convinced Columbia student leaders to add their names to the list and Columbia was forced to officially charter the country’s first student gay rights group on [[April 19]], [[1967]].<ref>Beemyn, Brett (2003). "The Silence Is Broken". Journal of the History of Sexuality 12: 205-223.</ref> The [[Spectator]] ran an editorial praising the chartering of the group and printed letters from students attacking and defending the decision. At this point, there was no apparent opposition from Columbia faculty or staff. The group was advised by the [[University Chaplain]], the Rev. [[John D. Cannon]].

Donaldson was active in promoting other SHL chapters around the country, including the [[Cornell]] Student Homophile League in [[1968]] and later the [[New York University]] chapter. By 1971, there were an estimated 150 gay student groups at colleges and universities in the United States.

Over time, SHL underwent many name changes, including '''Gay People at Columbia-Barnard''', before its present incarnation, Columbia Queer Alliance.<ref>[http://www.columbia.edu/cu/cqa/index.html Columbia Queer Alliance Website]</ref>

==Protests and Controversies==

On October 29, 2008, the [[Columbia Spectator]] editorial board published "Education, not Jubilation," <ref>Columbia Spectator Editorial Board (2008). "[http://www.columbiaspectator.com/2008/10/29/education-not-jubilation Education, Not Jubilation]" Columbia Spectator Oct. 29, 2008.</ref> which took Columbia Queer Alliance to task for allegedly failing to emphasize educational events over social events during Queer Awareness Month. The editorial, however, had some errors, including equating Columbia Queer Alliance and Queer Awareness Month as the same group, as well as stating that the [[Columbia University Marching Band]]'s Giant Penis Ring Toss was evidence of the month's overemphasis on "jubilation".

The editors ran a correction on the website and published the day after, addressing the distinction as well as the giant inflatable penis: "The editorial also misstated that a giant inflatable penis was part of QuAM's opening tabling. It was in fact part of a different campus event."

This led media outlets such as the [[Bwog]], American Spectator and [[IvyGate]] to identify the controversy as "Giant inflatable penis-gate." The following day, LGBT groups on campus organized a kiss-in in front of the Spectator's offices.

The group performed at off campus locations until it gained recognition from [[ABC]] in November, [[2004]].<ref>[http://www.columbiaspectator.com/node/16230 CU Clubs Fight for Funding, Approval], ''The Spec'', 11/19/04.</ref>

== The Name ==
The choice of the name 'Chowdah' remains a mystery to all, including the group's founders who claim not to remember. Guesses that it is a reference to the Simpsons episode, "[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_Who_Knew_Too_Much The Boy Who Knew Too Much]" have been denied.

== Students of Color Stage Ejection ==
In Spring [[2006]], Chowdah was invited by the [[Barnard]] Office of Multicultural Affairs to perform a show at a Students of Color Days on Campus event. The show was performed on [[April 22]], 2006 and ended with the sketch "A Whole New World... of Paranoia and Airport Security" (video of different performance can be seen [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaUKqW6W5-c here]), which featured Aladdin and Jasmine trying to board a magic carpet but being detained by airport security on the basis of racial profiling. Upon hearing the line, "Ooh, you better watch out Patty, this mother fucker is almost a burnt sienna," event organizers stepped onto the stage and ordered the performers to end the show. Chowdah was paid in full for the event and the incident is generally looked back on with much fondness by members.

'''Chowdah''' is a sketch comedy group. Chowdah has performed at Caroline's Comedy Club, the 2006 Annual Brandeis Sketch Festival, the [[West End]], and various locations on the [[Columbia campus]].

== History ==

Chowdah was founded in Spring, [[2004]] by [[Uri Weg]], [[Matthew J. Wilstein]], and [[Dave Verbitsky]]. On [[April 27]], [[2004]], it performed its first show at [[The West End]]. The group performed at off campus locations until it gained recognition from [[ABC]] in November, [[2004]].<ref>[http://www.columbiaspectator.com/node/16230 CU Clubs Fight for Funding, Approval], ''The Spec'', 11/19/04.</ref>

== The Name ==

Upon hearing the line "Ooh, you better watch out Patty, this mother fucker is almost a burnt sienna", event organizers stepped onto the stage and ordered the performers to end the show. Chowdah was paid in full for the event and the incident is generally looked back on with much fondness by members.
'''Mark Modesitt''', [[CC]] '10, is a [[Political Science]] and [[Spanish]] major. He was president of the [[CC 2010 Class Council|Class of 2010 Council]] for the [[2006]]-[[2007|07]] academic year, but is more widely known for his involvement in a "hate speech" incident that took place in March 2007.

On Monday [[March 5|March 5th]], [[2007]], a threat was written in permanent marker on the door of Modesitt's [[John Jay]] [[:Image:JJ8.gif|floor 8]] single.<ref>[http://www.columbiaspectator.com/node/24290 "CCSC 2010 President Gets Death Threat"], ''The Spectator'', 3/7/07.</ref> The threat read "Mark is racist, I'll kill you." Modesitt notified [[Public Safety]], naming at least four first year students. Public Safety then launched an investigation, sending an email to each implicated student. One of the students under investigation is Joey Goldberg, CC '10, a class representative running on the [[GO]] ticket against Modesitt's [[Alma Mater Remix]] party in the [[CCSC]] elections. Goldberg claims not to have had anything to do with the death threat. The other students under investigation include Chris Duncan, CC '10, an opinion editor for the [[Columbia Spectator]]; Rita Morales, CC '10; and Chloe Faux, CC '10.

The residents of Modesitt's floor were made to attend a mandatory meeting about "hate speech", held by floor 8 [[RA]] Alex Topkins. Modesitt's door was sanded down soon after the incident.

Some of the accused students have created a [[protests|protest]] group on [[Facebook]] called "I'm Being Investigated by Mark Modesitt". The group was deleted sometime between Thursday [[March 8|March 8th]] or Friday [[March 9|March 9th]]. Other Columbia students have since created a new group called "Class of 2010 is a Disgrace".
The Current's most recent issue, Spring [[2007]], was the first-ever Columbia publication to be printed in a 'green'--environmentally friendly--manner. The Current's paper is 100% Forest Stewardship Council certified, and 50% of it comes from recycled sources, of which 25% is post-consumer waste. Additionally, no chlorine or acids were used to bleach the paper or publish the journal. The '''Affirmative Action Bake Sale''' was an event organized by the [[Columbia College Conservative Club]] on [[February 5|February 5th]], [[2004]], mirroring [[:w:affirmative action bake sale|earlier affirmative action bake sales]] by Republican organizations at other campuses. (The first affirmative action bake sale occurred on the [[:w:UCLA|UCLA]] campus on [[February 3|February 3rd]], [[2003]], according to [[Wikipedia]], and has since been repeated at many campuses.<ref>http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/6708.html</ref>)

It was a 'cute' stunt,<ref>Left-wing stunts on campus are generally less cute and more on the scary side.</ref> characteristic of chronic right-wing provocation on campus, which initiated a wave of [[:w:moral panic|moral panic]] in everyone else. The club set up a stall selling baked goods at different prices to men and women of different races. The highest prices were charged for Asian men(?) and the lowest to black women (?). This was intended to highlight different treatment of different students by the [[Office of Undergraduate Admissions]] under the university's [[affirmative action]] policy.

The event resulted in a confrontation between students during which a student unaffiliated with C4 reportedly shouted "You don't deserve to be here!"<ref>References needed.</ref>

The incident was one of number which were cited as the cause for the [[Columbia University Concerned Students of Color Protest|Columbia University Concerned Students of Color Protest]] of Spring 2004.
The '''Blacky Fun Whitey cartoon''' was a cartoon published by [[The Fed]] on Friday [[February 20|February 20th]], [[2004]]<ref>[http://www.columbiaspectator.com/node/14768 "Citing 'Episodic' Racism, Students Stage Protests; Bollinger Responds"], ''Columbia Spectator'', 5/22/04.</ref> during Black History Month. It sparked the [[Columbia University Concerned Students of Color Protest]]. The cartoon was intended to highlight the reductionist effect of Black History Month on the subject of black history.

It was part of a series of cartoons called '''Wacky Fun Whitey''' by Ben Schwartz, who had already graduated at the time of the cartoon's publication.
Upon hearing the line "Ooh, you better watch out Patty, this mother fucker is almost a burnt sienna", event organizers stepped onto the stage and ordered the performers to end the show. Chowdah was paid in full for the event and the incident is generally looked back on with much fondness by members.
'''Václav Havel''', playwright and the ex-president of Czechoslovakia, spent 7 weeks in the Fall [[2006]] semester as Columbia's [[Artist in Residence]]. This primarily involved him giving mostly incomprehensible speeches in poor English, most notably a terribly garbled and underwhelming [[CC Coursewide Lecture]].

Columbia completely milked his 7-week stay for all it was worth including:
* Controversially, the first semester [[Lit Hum]] syllabus, which is traditionally limited to ancient Greek texts and the Bible, was altered that year to include one of Havel's plays, ''The Garden Party''.
* Littered the campus with [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ceremonies/commencement/docs/events/commencement/address.html havel water bottles][photo needed]
* Gracing even the hapless maintenance workers toiling perpetually to fix the [[Wien]] water boiler with his presence [http://www.bwog.net/publicate/index.php?page=post&article_id=2559]
* [[CCNMTL]] Created an entire website, http://havel.columbia.edu/, including video of
** [http://havel.columbia.edu/core.html His 'core' speech] (be sure and read the feedback before Columbia erases it)
** [http://havel.columbia.edu/lou_reed.html A set of interviews with Lou Reed]-- that's right, Lou fucking Reed, secretly a Havel scholar apparently, and
** Photos, his personal notebooks, and myriad other miscellany. Unbelievable, really.
The fraternity house was located at 531 West 113th Street. Zeta Psi is known on campus primarily for its parties, annual highlights include Jello Jam (hundreds of jello shots), Jello Wrestling, and Mardi Gras. The fraternity has had a strong relationship with the campus bar [[1020]], with brothers working there are as staff. The fraternity is generally considered to be composed of stoners and guys who like to party.

After several semesters of failing to fill their house, and after an incident that involved alcohol given to prefrosh at Days on Campus, Zeta Psi lost their house in the summer of [[2007]]. Since the house was confiscated, it is uncertain what will happen to it. Zeta Psi now joins [[Phi Gamma Delta]] as a Columbia fraternity that has lost their house.
While Fruit Paunch was never known to rely much on their [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/fruitpaunch/ official Web site], since September, 2006 (at least), the site has contained only the text "''Someone owes me $20. -Cody''". This message was posted by [[Cody Hess]], SEAS '06, who was listed as their official webmaster and member of the campus' other improv troupe, [[Klaritin]]. Not surprisingly, he claims that this was done in retribution for the group's failure to compensate him for his service as webmaster. A look at [[cunix]] reveals that aside from the default page <nowiki>index.html</nowiki>, all previous web files are present, intact, and owned current Fruit Paunch president, Addison Anderson. In other words, nothing is actually stopping the group from restoring their page.

In 2006, another [[Klaritin]] member, [[Alex Weinberg]] purchased [http://www.fruitpaunch.com/ fruitpaunch.com] and gave it to Addison Anderson as an act of goodwill. It was never developed, and currently lies dormant.
|Population=189}}'''Ruggles''' is a residence hall that mostly houses sophomores and juniors in suites.

Ruggles suites 708-714 and 808-814 were renovated during the summer of [[2006]]. Housing Services is considering renovating further suites this summer.

Most 4-person suites go to juniors or occasionally seniors. Most 7-person suites go to crafty sophomores (who are willing to take two doubles to get three singles) and mixed-class groups.

==History==

Ruggles was originally the Arizona Hotel. In [[1964]], the university purchased it and converted it into a graduate residence. It was later made into undergraduate housing.

Bad shit that's happened here:
*[[Ruggles murder-suicide]] of [[2000]] in room 509
*[[Ruggles vandalization incident]] of [[2006]]

== Facilities ==
Floors 7 & 8: recently renovated and kitchens have dishwashers.

=== Suites ===
* 16 4-person suites
* 1 1st floor 5-person suite
* 2 1st floor 6-person suites
* 12 8-person suites with 2 singles and 3 doubles
* 2 8-person suites with 4 singles and 2 doubles

== Advantages and disadvantages ==

== Advantages ==
* A short walk to [[JJ's Place]], the [[John Jay Dining Hall]], [[Butler]], and [[Hamilton Hall]]. [[Strokos]] is practically next door
* Parties more feasible than you'd think
* Some huge (175+ sq ft) singles
* Weekly cleaning of common areas
* High floors have access to the roof. Actually going up there is prohibited, but rarely enforced unless a lot of people are there
* Good soundproofing between rooms

== Disadvantages ==
* Exposed pipes
* Poor lighting
* Rodent infestation
* Poor temperature regulation
* Small bathroom in 8 person suites is very small (25 sq. ft)
* Insufficient laundry equipment (4 washers and 4 dryers when all are operational)
* Slow single elevator
* You have to take your garbage to the basement yourself
* No stair access to basement
* Inadequate common area (no chairs; flat screen with no remote)
* Many rooms exposed to nighttime noise on [[Frat Row]]
* You have to swipe open the entrance door only to be swiped again by a guard

*"''Most people don't have a very good understanding of statistics. They think that it's a special thing when they have a dream and it comes true, but if you think about it, you have - what? 3 to 5 dreams per night, 365 nights a year and your dreams are generally somewhat based on what happens in your everyday life, so there's a pretty good chance that some of them will come true from time to time. What would be more interesting is if your dreams ''never'' came true. You're actually pretty special if you can say your dreams never come true.''"
'''Clifford Stein''' is a professor in both the [[IEOR Department|IEOR]] and [[Computer Science Department|CS]] departments. He is best known as co-author of the book ''[http://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Algorithms-Thomas-H-Cormen/dp/0262032937/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-2183389-8664866?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184572112&sr=8-2 Introduction to Algorithms]'', the de facto standard book on programming algorithms. He teaches the course [[Introduction to Algorithms I]] based on the text.

== Classroom quotes ==
*"''I suppose if an adversary was trying to make your life difficult, he could think of a better way than to degrade the efficiency of your skip lists...''" explaining why he didn't build in defensive measures into his example [[w:skip list|skip list]] algorithm.

Revived in [[2001]] after a 12-year lapse in publication and again in [[2004]] after a shorter one, ''Jester'' has once again begun to produce magazines as well as sponsor comedy events on Columbia's campus.
