The 250 Greatest Alumni was a list published the Columbia Spectator during the course of Columbia 250, the University's celebration of its 250th birthday. The University came up with its own list of Columbians Ahead of Their Time. The Spectator's list, which includes graduates of all divisions of the University as well as Barnard College, was published in reverse order in sets of 10 with mini bios for each alumnus each Friday beginning on October 17, 2003 through the final week of April 2004, when the remaining 50 names were released in sets of 10 each day of the week. The series concluded with a commentary on methodology by then-editor-in-chief Megan Greenwell. As all things of this nature do, the list generated some controversy and numerous errors that were often pointed out in the letters to the editor. As one would expect, a number of dropouts rank highly on the list.
* The street grid falls apart
* The proportion of hipsters to investment bankers increases substantially
* NYU students abound

Union Square is located at the point that 14th meets Broadway and Park Avenue. One way to get there is to take the 1 train to 14th Street (or transfer at 96th to the 2 or 3 for the same station) and walk east along 14th.

The street itself is surprisingly sketchy for most of its length, given the wealth of its surrounds, and attracts an unusual number of transients and fast food outlets.
Once a mainstay of black culture in New York City, it is now populated by a considerable number of chain stores, including Starbucks, Old Navy, and H&M. There's also a 9-screen AMC movie theater (along with, of course, the world famous Apollo Theater).

Some Columbia students consider this to be the far northern boundary of Morningside Heights and fear treading beyond it. Many such students choose, absurdly, to shop at the same chain stores available on 125th Street at their far downtown locations.

Getting there
Instead of taking the (1) train to the 125th Street subway station, it's best to take the M60 bus, which stops at 116 and Broadway and runs all along 125th Street. Be careful not to go too far, or you'll end up in Queens, at LaGuardia Airport. Pathmark, at Lexington Avenue on the East Side, is two stops before the RFK Bridge to Queens.
Effectively Columbia's subway station. It is on the 1 line, which runs local from South Ferry to Van Cortlandt Park-242nd Street. The next uptown station is 125th Street, and the next one downtown is Cathedral Parkway-110th Street.

The station is one of the few at which you can change from the uptown train to the downtown train without exiting.

It is said that William Barclay Parsons, CC'1879 and Chief Engineer of the IRT Subway project, purposely designed the Columbia station to be the nicest in the system.
Between these gates, 116th Street is a pedestrianized preserve known as College Walk, the property of the school since the tenure of University President Eisenhower in the 1950s. 116th and Broadway is also the location of Columbia's subway station.

Within Morningside Heights, 116th Street extends only a block in either direction from campus. On the western side, it passes Casa Hispanica and the intersection with Claremont Avenue before ending at Riverside Drive in front of Riverside Park. On the eastern side, it passes the entrance to the law school, Deutsches Haus, Wien Hall, and the President's House before ending at Morningside Drive in front of Morningside Park. East of Morningside Park, the street picks up again, passing through a heavily Senegalese part of Harlem. There is another 116th St. station down there, on the 2/3 lines, that confused freshmen always wind up at late at night, prompting the need for a steep and unsafe climb of the steps in Morningside Park.
West 114th Street is also a major street for campus housing, as six of Columbia's residence halls and eleven of its brownstones are located on the street. 109 Gourmet Deli is a few blocks away on Amsterdam Ave. from local Columbia bar, 1020. Nicknamed CrackDel and 40s-are-us. Notably delivered 40s to freshman dorms.

After a police sting in 2013 lost them their liquor license, and Bloomberg raised the city's smoking age to 21, business has never been better!

Spicy Special
Incredibly tasty sandwich. It consists of Boar's Head Cajun Turkey, Pepper Jack Cheese, Onion, Green Pepper, Spicy Peppers, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo, and Spicy Mustard on your choice of a toasted roll or hero.

For $4.49, a free soda, and extremely late night availability, nothing in the Columbia vicinity comes close, except for Koronets and the no-longer existent Columbia Bagel.

Photos of the sandwich are unavailable. They are so delicious that the thought of photographing it never enters the consciousness.
1020 is a well-loved bar on Amsterdam Avenue at 110th St. It was once the low-key haunt of grad students and hipsters. Today, although it continues to skew a little older, 1020 is now home to a more energetic crowd. There's usually a line outside the door on Thursday through Saturday nights. Someone also celebrated his 21st birthday there once—with his parents. In 2012, Robert met Kristine here, and fell head-over-heels.

The bar boasts a dart board and one of the neighborhood's only respectable pool tables. It also comes with friendly bartenders and a groovy decor (read: Christmas lights all year round). Random movies (sometimes porn) are projected onto a large screen in the back, without sound, and the bar's soundtrack is the definition of a mixed bag.

Drinks are fairly cheap (Used to be $3 for Yuengling and Rolling Rock—now $4) and happy hours run every day from 4pm-7pm when drinks and tap beers are half price. If you're looking for a quieter scene and cigarette-centric conversation, head over later in the evening; the place is open till 4 am. If you try to order a cocktail there, you should leave.

Every Tuesday at 8, random people from the neighborhood and some brave Columbia souls venture to Trivia Night to test their knowledge of pop culture, music, and random facts. Winner of Trivia Night usually gets a $20 tab (or 5 Yuengling's).

10027 is basically Columbia's zip code. Notably, Lerner Hall falls into this zip code, so all students with a Lerner mailbox have an address of the form: #### Lerner Hall, New York, NY 10027.

In order to ensure proper delivery, however, it is best for students to be more explicit about where their mail is going. Either including "2920 Broadway" (Lerner's address), "c/o Columbia University," "116th and Broadway," or Lerner Hall's own zip code extension, 7164, seem to work.
South of the campus, many buildings fall into the 10025 zip code. So if you're using Google to look for something nearby, make sure to search "near 10025" instead of "near 10027." Unless you want to end up at a Duane Reade in the middle of Harlem.

Columbia University tunnels

Columbia has an extensive tunnel system connecting most buildings on campus and acting as conduits for steam, electricity, telecommunications, and other infrastructure. The tunnels are a mysterious, foreboding place fully explored only by legendary figures in campus history. They are where unspeakable acts of pure horror are committed.

History
:See main article at History of the tunnels

List of tunnels
:See main article at List of tunnels

Maps
Old maps, from the 1950s, are accessible easily from the Columbiana Library. They are still roughly accurate. If you bug the reference librarian enough she might bring over the newest editions of the grounds maps. These new maps unfortunately can't be posted online due to copyright restrictions.

The map at the top of this article was created by former Columbia student Mike Schiraldi and released under the GFDL. It was created in 1999 so it's somewhat out of date, and is incomplete. The purple areas, marked "rumored," are just that; they almost certainly don't exist. As described in the map's legend, different colors are used to indicate different types of tunnel and levels of certainty:

* Green lines indicate areas that are not only known to exist but also places that the Columbia administration openly allows students and staff to be. For example, the underground connection between Hartley and Wallach halls.
* Yellow lines indicate areas that are known to exist but considered off-limits to all but Columbia's maintenance workers.
* Purple lines indicate rumored connections that have not been verified. In particular, there is almost certainly no tunnel under Broadway or along College Walk.

Famous tunnel explorers
* Benoit - a famous tunnel explorer who still answers questions about and leads tours of the system
* Ken Hechtman - a student whose group ADHOC wrought havoc in the tunnels in the 1980s and subsequently was expelled for stealing uranium from the Pupin basement

Alexander Hamilton was a Founding Father of the United States. He also failed to graduate from Columbia's predecessor, King's College, over 220 years ago. It wasn't his fault. While many maintain Hamilton was a dropout, he only left because the school closed during the Revolutionary War. He remains one of the most famous people ever associated with the school - even though he never got a degree, and the school wasn't even called Columbia at the time.

A misguided young Hamilton was originally interested in attending Princeton (then hideously named the "College of New Jersey"), but was rejected. When he became a general during the Revolutionary War, he famously ordered a cannonball fired at Princeton's Nassau Hall when a battle was taking place on the college's campus.

A proud pseudo-alumnus, Hamilton was instrumental, with John Jay, in reinstating King's as Columbia College in less than a year after British troops departed New York at the end of the war. Several years later, he employed shrewd legal maneuvers to wrest Columbia from state control, placing the college under the control of a private Board partly led by himself.

Hamilton Hall is named after him, and that statue outside Hamilton, yeah, that's him too. The Alexander Hamilton Medal is given in his honor, and the Law School's full tuition scholarship is named after him. You might have also seen him featured on the $10 bill. Oh, and he was murdered in cold blood by the sinister Aaron Burr, who happened to be a graduate of darkest Princeton. Sadly, Burr inflicted a wound so deep and vile that not even Columbia medicine prof David Hosack could save Hamilton's life.

His son, James Hamilton, also attended Columbia, and was an early member of the Philolexian Society.
