Sigma Nu is a fraternity located at 556 West 113th Street, the Delta Gamma Chapter at Columbia. It is founded on the principles of Love, Truth, and Honor, and stands strictly by its historic mandate of not hazing new members. Many brothers are or have been members of the Men's Swimming and Diving team, but the fraternity nevertheless maintains its own separate identity. The fraternity has experienced significant growth and improvement since 2006 and is very happy with its progress. The Columbia chapter is well documented on its website, sigmanucu.com

The National Fraternity
See the Sigma Nu National website. More information coming soon.

Community Service
Sigma Nu is considered one of the more service-oriented fraternities at Columbia. Besides participating in all the large scale events on campus including Relay for Life, CCO (Columbia Community Outreach), and CU Dance Marathon, members also participate in all Greek-sponsored fundraisers, such as Theta's Breakfast at our CASA, AXO's "LipSync", and various other annual and one-time events. After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the fraternity sponsored a comedy show with a comedy central stand up comedian in John Jay lounge and all proceeds went to relief efforts.

Sigma Nu also supports a program at Hunter College called (Project HAPPY). Every weekend Sigma Nu brothers travel to the Hunter Campus and assist in giving sports instruction to autistic individuals. The main focus has been in swimming and water safety, however brothers also volunteer with tennis, bowling, basketball, and other activities. Each spring Sigma Nu sells raffle tickets to raise money for Project HAPPY.

As of 2010, Sigma Nu began officially supporting the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, specifically working for the Help4Ezra cause. Ezra, a four year old boy in need of matching bone marrow, is the cousin of a Sigma Nu brother which prompted the group's involvement.

Awards
In 2009, Sigma Nu was named the Most Outstanding Chapter in the Columbia Fraternal system.
In 2009, Sigma Nu also earned several awards for the outstanding size of their recruiting class.
In 2010, Sigma Nu again was named Most Outstanding Chapter.

Trivia
*It is widely rumored that Julia Stiles once spent the night in Room 33.
*The goal post from the streak-snapping Columbia-Princeton football game, from 1987, where the Columbia Lions came out victorious over the Princeton Tigers 17-14, resides in the backyard.
*The Members Room was completed in 2009, the most recent of several upgrades to the House.
*In the 80s and earlier the poorly insulated kitchen was actually a poorly insulated single - for this reason it was known as the "cheese locker".
*In 1984, when Bozo the Clown pretended to run for president to raise opposition to the incumbent Reagan he gave a well received speech at Columbia University. His 'Body Guards' were all Sigma Nu brothers (dressed in suits, sun glasses, and round red noses), as some brothers at the time were members of a band called 'The Nasty Bozos'.
Summary
The Men's Swimming and Diving program at Columbia competes in the Ivy League in Division I of the NCAA. The season officially begins in October and ends in early March, although technically all college swim seasons extend until the NCAA Championships regardless of whether they have entrants.
The Columbia Lions train in Uris Pool on the first floor of the Marcellus Hartley Dodge Physical Fitness Center. Information about the team can be found at Columbia University athletics website.
Tug McGraw Foundation
Since 2007, the Men's Swim team has had a strong connection to the Tug McGraw Foundation. The foundation has a team run in the New York City Marathon, and each fall the swim team will disperse in small groups across the five boroughs with signs and bright shirts to cheer on the foundation's runners. This time commitment is also usually coupled with a donation. Starting in Spring 2010, the Foundation will be participating in the Half Marathon and the Swim Team will be there again.

Achievements
The Columbia Lions tend to finish the season well. Their dual meet record is often a poor indicator of their end-of-season performance. Columbia enjoys healthy competition with most of the Ivy League, often just shy of league powerhouses Princeton and Harvard, and in close battles with Yale and Cornell. In 2009 Columbia finished 5th in the Ivy League; 2008 - 4th, 2007 - 4th, 2006 - 3rd.

The Lions are also a high accomplishing team within Columbia Athletics. In 2008-2009 the Men's Swimming and Diving team finished fifth in the Lion's Cup rankings in it's year of inception. The Lion's Cup ranks teams based on Athletic Achievement, Academic Achievement, Spirit, Community Service, and LIONS Fund Participation.

Miscellaneous
Former Assistant Coach Eric Scheingoltz is currently the Head Swim Coach at Drew University in New Jersey.

Juniors in High School are encouraged to visit or contact the head coach. Find out more about the team at the Columbia Athletics Website, gocolumbialions.com. For potential recruits, find the recruiting page.

Recruiting trips occur on weekends throughout the fall, during which high school seniors stay with current college swimmers and get to experience college life and collegiate athletics.

The Athletic Department encourages prospective students to consider Early Decision, which must be filed earlier than regular decision. These applications are favorably judged because applicants express their true desire to attend Columbia University exclusively. For those uncomfortable with this commitment, admission through regular decision is still possible, and in fact more common.

Notable Alumni/Members:
Darius Dehnad,
Anthony Corbisiero,
Derek Neal,
Robert Frawley,

Recruiting - New Members
Juniors in High School are encouraged to visit or contact the head coach. Find out more about the team at the Columbia Athletics Website, www.gocolumbialions.com . For potential recruits, find the recruiting page .

2009 Relay for life on Low Steps.

National History
In the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted
to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office. He
decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he
enjoyed—running marathons.
In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at
Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than
83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or walk 30
minutes with him. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer. That first year,
nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt's friends, family, and patients watched as he
ran and walked the course.
While he circled the track those 24 hours, he thought about how others
could take part. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could
raise more money to fight cancer. Months later he pulled together a
small committee to plan the first team relay event known as the City
of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.
In 1986, 19 teams took part in the first team relay event on the track
at the colorful, historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An
indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents that
dotted the infield.

Relay at Columbia
(for someone more verbose to rephrase) great entertainment, fun games, baked goods everywhere, French Society kissing booth ("oui, oui!"), SigNu/SigChi dodgeball tournament, water-balloon toss, Miss Relay Pageant, Lip Sync, free food and SOO much more.

Miss Relay Pageant
(for someone more verbose to rephrase) dudes in dresses and heels go bar-hopping begging for money for ACS and usually make a few hundred dollars each in about two hours.

Survivorship
