&lt;div&gt;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Joseph Bauke&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; was a professor of Germanic languages and chairman of the [[German Department]]. He joined Columbia in [[1959]] and continued teaching until his untimely death, in [[1983]], at the age of 51.  He was also the director of [[Deutsches Haus]]. In [[1976]], he received the [[Mark Van Doren Award]], given annually by students. He was usually seen around campus in a finely tailored suit and tie.  He endeared himself to his students with his charm and love of knowledge.&lt;br /&gt;
