I have to admit, I'm flattered. WhatYouKnowAboutThat 20:36, 12 June 2007 (EDT)
::* Why don't you guys follow your own rules? From the WikiCU help page:
" Complaints about an article

Wikipedia doesn't censor content. Neither does WikiCU. Occasionally someone will post stuff that others don't like. This might include slander or unnecessarily personal information. You are welcome to remove this content yourself by editing the article."

:I guess that rule is a bit misleading, but it is true. The maintainers of WikiCU are fairly hands off on censoring content, but the admins are just regular users who happen to participate a lot and were given extra rights. I wouldn't quite call the Erica Jackson or Matt Sanchez pages "attack pages". They're about people who are notoriously disliked on campus and part of wikicu is reflecting campus sentiment. The difference between the Jackson/Sanchez pages and what you posted is that those pages are factual, whereas yours is purely opinion and does not demonstrate any relevance to anyone in the student body besides you and the person you're attacking. I wouldn't delete something just because I don't think it's funny (though I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that thought what you wrote was funny). --Nonsensical 13:01, 13 June 2007 (EDT)

:* I would beg to differ with your statement regarding the "factual" statements you've posted about Erica Jackson, Matt Sanchez, and countless other controversial pages on this website. Frequently there are articles you've written that bear NO citations, but rather tout your subjective and rather erroneous opinions about the Columbia community. It's "funny" that you frequently seem to find yourself exempt from the rules that you purportedly support, as an admin, but have no problem deleting pages that don't fit some esoteric underlying objective you seem to be furthering with every article you write. You clearly socialize in different circles [if at all] if you believe Sanchez and Jackson to be more infamous on the Columbia campus than Beaulac; perhaps you should diversify content and maintain strictly factual articles if you intend to oversee a site that is useful to someone other than the four or five of you who are so clearly invested in this piece of shit.

::If you see something that's factually incorrect, I invite you to correct it, or at the very least point it out on a talk page. My problem with the page wasn't the relevance, but the fact that it just contained puerile insults towards him. You think Matt Sanchez is less infamous than ? I'm not going to really argue that, but just try typing "Matt Sanchez" and "" into searches on Spec, Bwog, and Google and see what you find. I remind you that this is a wiki. I got involved with this site simply because I saw it growing and thought it was a good idea and I could add information about what I knew at Columbia. If you feel like the articles lack diversity, then please by all means add/revise/contribute. --Nonsensical 12:37, 14 June 2007 (EDT)

I think a lot of these courses are far better known by their long names, like Frontiers of Science or Principles of Econ. The current list is a meaningless pile of numbers to me. ::I agree with Pacman. I prefer "Course Title (Bulletin Code)" as the main article title and then if it has alternate titles, we can redirect to the main article. We can also make redirect pages for "ECON W1105" to go directly to "Principles of Economics (ECON W1105)". Also, stellar work on getting in all these course outlines, Reaganaut. Nonsensical 15:01, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
::There's only occasionally a problem with conflicting names, though, whereas most of these course codes are completely obscure and unknown to the general student body. I agree with Nonsensical's proposal. Pacman 15:08, 4 May 2007 (EDT)

Thanks Nonsensical! I just hope this repository of syllabi gathers some momentum. As for article names, I still strongly believe it makes sense to have the main articles under the course numbers. Some reasons:
* Some courses have multiple names. For example: "Masterpieces of Western Art", "Art Humanities", "Art Hum".
* Some course have one name but people would still type different things to get to the course page. Example: "History of the City of New York", "History of New York City" "History of NYC", "NYC History".
* If you want to quickly go to a course page, you're probably on the bulletin, the directory, or Courseworks, so you have the code at hand.
* Some courses have horrible names. It's much more of a pain to type "Theoretical Foundations of Political Economy" than "ECON X3041". You think that's not too long a title? What about "Topics in the Black Experience: Black Civil Society, International Affairs and United States Foreign Policy" or "Comparative Study of Constitutional Challenges Affecting African, Latino and Asian American Communities"? Even worse, some courses have punctuation which could necessitate a dozen redirecting articles (& , ; : . ?).
* Articles named according to their code will be alphabetized in the courses category.
:Just a thought - if we precede titled names with numbers the categories will organize just as nicely... Pacman 16:57, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
* Update: Also, another confusion could be courses like Calculus II... it has variously been known as "Calculus 2", "Calculus II" and "Calculus IIA". 15:59, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
15:22, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
:I understand where you're coming from, but I feel like redirects solve a lot of those problems. If people want to go quickly to "Theoretical Foundations of Political Economy", then they can type "ECON X3041" and get redirected. The alphabetizing thing I agree is unfortunate, but I feel like if courses are further subcategorized at the level of departments, it won't be that bad. Nonsensical 15:39, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
::OK, well let's have a vote to settle it. If the majority of people want long titles, I'll go along with it. But I won't be responsible if duplicates start cropping up! :) 15:57, 4 May 2007 (EDT)

Vote
Should articles about courses use their number as the title (e.g. "HIST W3535") or their name as the title (e.g. "History of the City of New York")? This vote is being held to resolve the above discussion.

* Number - Some titles are too long or can be confused due to their punctuation. Worse, some courses have several titles. Also, if we use numbers, courses will appear alphabetically in categories. Course titles can redirect to the actual articles. For example, Masterpieces of Western Art, Art Humanities, and Art Hum will all redirect to HUMA W1121. 15:57, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
* Name - Theoretically, WikiCU exists for referential purposes. Someone looking up said course will more closely identify with any variant of the course name than with its rarely-remembered course number. Most class names, moreover, are not that ambiguous. There would be far less work to do creating redirects for name variants after choosing one acceptable version of the course name than creating redirects for EVERY SINGLE class which is titularly referred to by number. Pacman 16:02, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
* Name - I find the jumble of letters & numbers aesthetically displeasing. Nonsensical 16:54, 4 May 2007 (EDT)

The US News rankings are the most widely used set of university and college rankings. Columbia typically places around 9th or 10th. This is probably fairly accurate, but many people believe that Columbia is consistently under-ranked because its admissions committee places less of an emphasis on SAT scores than most of the other top 10 universities. Additionally, alumni giving is consistently lower at Columbia than at comparable institutions, further affecting our rank.

Erica Jackson, GS '06, was an English major and was active on GSSC. Apparently she hangs out on campus these days, despite an apparent hatred of Columbia which motivates her to organize the Literature-Writing Major Senior Thesis Reading. Anonymous people have also said that she think she's poor, which they consider to be ironic since she manages to live comfortably in NYC in a 12 x 6 room, with bath and kitchen shared with 17 other women in a women's hotel run by nuns.

Erica has applied to every Columbia graduate program, including the Business School, the School of Social Work, the School of Rock, and the school of Ninjitsu Arts and Sciences, but after being rejected she eventually was accepted, after 40 years in the desert, by both the CalArts MFA program and the School of Hard Knocks.

Erica is related to Crown Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands through her mother's side, and perhaps is one of the only Americans that can claim both a distinct royal lineage and a common American middle-class upbringing.

Some "anonymous and unnamed people" have said that she hates men, especially white men, whom she hates especially. Which is why she mentors people, including men. She's devious like that.

In response to her apparent hatred of white men, all the men on her mother's side of the family (the white side, if you will) are willing to accept it as long as she continues taking family photos for free.

In her free time, between working several jobs and helping the less fortunate, she laughs and laughs at people who sit around devising ways to hate on her anonymously.

She can be currently found shaking the haters off. She is doing this primarily by writing on the talk page of her WikiCU article.

Excerpts from her blog
<blockquote>"A classmate who was accepted into Columbia'as[sic] MFA writing program told me last year, "I knew exactly what they wanted and I gave it to them." I found that chilling. If that's what an MFA program is about, why not just copy the same books over and over and over again and just change the author's name and title? What scares me is that this woman isn't a great writer and she never will be. She is a competant[sic] one, yes, but her lack of self-reliance and addiction to people pleasing mean she never will be much more. Oh, she'll make great connections there and she'll be published. But her work will never truly change anyone's life."</blockquote>

<blockquote>"Men in these situations often tell me I have no sense of humor, which amuses my friends to no end, since I'm most often described as one of the smartest, funniest and kindest people they know."</blockquote>

<blockquote>"And, should I lose weight and become remotely thin, and at all successful in my career, I know I will deeply resent the men and employers who suddenly acknowledge all I have to offer. I saw it everyday[sic] at Columbia -- semi-attractive women with barely a fraction of my talent and intellect, but people fell all over themselves trying to help them."</blockquote>

<blockquote>"One of the biggest lessons I learned at Columbia was that, because I have twice as many X chromosomes as the next guy, my sole value is in my appearance. It made the difference in whether or not people talked to me, listened to my ideas, how they graded me and in how I was perceived in every situation. Appearance is an accident of who screwed who[sic] for the past few thousand years, why does my entire future hinge on my DNA rather than my intellligence, talent and hard work?"</blockquote>

Fun Fact: Lists "Superior spelling, vocabulary & grammar" on her resume.
St. Anthony Hall, better known as St. A's is a national organization that was founded at Columbia in 1847 and has since established chapters at elite universities around the country. It has the Greek letter designation Delta Psi. As Columbia's was the first chapter of the organization, it is known as the Alpha Chapter.

It is best described as half fraternity, half secret society. Though highly secretive, the organization is also known for its formalwear parties, and rumors of cocaine use abound.

At Columbia, St. A's owns a building on Riverside Drive adjacent to Woodbridge, between 116th and 115th Streets.

History
St. A's was first founded at Columbia in 1847, although it did not have a home of its own until 1879, when the first St. A's house opened. It is still standing at 29 E. 28th St. and was designed by Columbia College alum James Renwick, Jr. According to the New York Times, "old photographs show a high stoop arrangement with the figure of an owl on the peeked roof and a plaque with the Greek letters Delta Psi over the windowless chapter room. In 1879 the New York Tribune called it French Renaissance, but the stumpy pilasters and blocky detailing suggest the Neo-Grec style then near the end of its popularity." A late 19th century newspaper account dubbed the building a "perfect Bijou of tasteful decoration"

The present house on Riverside Drive was built in 1899, just after Columbia's move to Morningside Heights, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The former house was kept for a few years as a club for members from all chapters. From 1904 to 1990, a purpose-built St. Anthony's Club also operated for members of all branches of the society in an E. 64th St. townhouse.

Alleged incidents
Once, St. A's kids threw a glass bottle at a black kid, sparking a protest that lasted about five minutes.

On another occasion, a black student entering St. Anthony Hall for a party held the door open for a young white female. She responded, "Thank you, I haven't seen you before, how long have you been working here?". She was later rather embarrassed.

Brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha once snuck a homeless person into one of the St. A's parties, claiming that the man was a professor of East African studies. He was able to stay long enough to get one drink before members of St. Anthony Hall ejected him.

Members
Members are believed to include: Gussie Foshay Rothfeld, Rebecca Dunnan, Gillian Rogers, Clay Wiske, Preston Pohl, Brian Mulligan, Timothy Tzeng, Hugh Pollack, Bunny, Zoe Barry, Wyatt Angelo, Alexander Sullivan, Alexander Howard, Lizzy Fraser, Mariah Samost, Gabrielle Sloame, Charlotte Chapman, Lindsay Talbot, Katie Forer, Molly Black, Leila Forrence, Martina Hansen and Charmaine.

Somewhat controversial theory formulated by Tao Tan in 2004.

Basically, it goes like this. There are five pillars that define the greatness of a university. They are (in no particular order):
:* Undergraduate education and quality of life
:* Law
:* Business
:* Medicine
:* Science & engineering

Columbia's institutional agenda ought to focus on strengthening those five pillars, and not things like sustainable development, globalization, public health, arts, or postmodernist feminist deconstructionist antihegemonist critiques of Marxism.

Note that this theory fails for schools such as Princeton and Amherst which lack Law, Business, and Medicine. Then again, those universities may indeed be low-grade.
It is also known for its debilitating bureaucracy, but at least it has school spirit.

People
Recently a lot of "vanity pages" have been popping up, and WikiCU's never really established a policy on what the criteria is for people to have articles, I thought this would be a good place to discuss it. Nonsensical 19:46, 19 May 2007 (EDT)

Current Students
*Should articles about current students be expected to bear some relevance to campus life or is anyone deserving of an article as long as someone is willing to write one?

Nonsensical's thoughts
:So I'm sort of torn on this, but I'm leaning toward a standard criteria for notability. Here's my pro/con

:Pro Notability Standard:
:*One of the things that initially drew me to WikiCU was looking at the students section and realizing there were a lot of students that were important to campus life that I was not aware of. I feel like including people whose articles are only interesting to that person and their friends dilutes the wiki and makes it less interesting to read through. It was interesting to find out who Chas Carey was and see how much he's involved in that's important to student life on campus, whereas reading an article like Patrick Kerns, who I'm sure is a nice guy and all, but I don't really know why anyone would care to find out the nicknames of someone whose claim to fame is working for collegeboxes for a few weeks.
:*More vanity pages means a lot of pages that won't be carefully watched and will likely accumulate information that is either false or outdated as time goes on.

:Con Notability Standard:
:*Allowing "vanity pages" may draw in more users who will subsequently get very involved or at the very least edit a few more articles that are a little more relevant.
:*I'm somewhat eager to write stupid articles about myself and all my friends

:Proposed Criteria for Notability:
:*An article mainly about them in the spec, bwog, or any major publication.
:*Elected position in student government, university senate
:*Participation in one or more student groups that together play an important role in student life (e.g. writer for student publications, involvement in performing arts groups). And by important role in student life, I mean that it affects students outside the organizations in which they participate.
:*Created a book, album, or film that is widely distributed (or well known on campus)

----

Alumni
*Should alumni pages be held to different standards?
*If a person has an article as a current student, should its contents change to suit relevance to campus life several years after graduation?

Nonsensical's thoughts
:I feel like standards for creating a page for an alumnus should be higher than current students. If a student was borderline deserving of an article as a current student but then has absolutely no bearing on campus life whatsoever after graduating, I don't see why there needs to be an article about them unless they:
:*effected some change that is relevant after graduation
:*achieved something impressive after graduation

General thoughts
* I think Nonsensical has created a very well thought out set of criteria, and I would support making them the official criteria. 20:04, 19 May 2007 (EDT)
* Nonsensical's standards would be fine if there were a space crunch and we really had to limit the number of articles on WikiCU by imposing a filter like notability. But is there? I don't see how extra information about any student or an alumnus hurts the site in any way, whereas Nonsensical acknowledges it could help bring in more users. Pacman 00:12, 20 May 2007 (EDT)
* While I like the relatively informal nature of this wiki, some standards are necessary for it to be taken seriously by the student body, in my opinion. I think the criteria set out above are a good metric to use for gauging notability. WhatYouKnowAboutThat 13:43, 20 May 2007 (EDT)

Swish has an extensive menu, ranging from bog-standard Asian dishes to a few more exciting choices. Options include Thai Sate, Pad Thai, various curries, etc. Most dishes are of an average standard and fairly reliable. The service is quick, though sometimes it's too quick and you get your main course 10 seconds after your starter. A number of people believe the waiters can be a little harsh, and one of them is somewhat sadistic. Generally, however, you can't go wrong with this place. Just watch out for the communal table in the center of the restaurant - you might like it or you might hate it. Their Bento Lunch Box deal is among the best in the neighborhood.

Swish might be a good restaurant to try if you're looking for Asian food but you're bored of MSG-infested Ollie's.
