He transferred to Columbia from [[Northwestern University]]'s undergraduate journalism school, where he reportedly ignored all journalism classes in favor of literature and art history. At Columbia, he studied under poets [[Kenneth Koch]] and [[David Shapiro]] and edited the ''[[Columbia Review]]'' and ''[[Upstart]]''. He spent much of his final semester studying abroad in Paris before returning to enroll in [[NYU]]'s graduate film program.
