Haughton's hire by Columbia made the national press. After leading Columbia to a .500 record in his first season, Haughton got the team off to a 4-1 record in 1924 before collapsing and dying during a practice. Columbia attempted to hire legendary coach [[Knute Rockne]] to replace him, but screwed up the negotiations.
