His thesis, "Crystallization of a Conflict: The United States, Israel and the Palestinians, 1976-1980," was awarded the [[Chanler Historical Prize]] and the [[Alan J. Willen Memorial Prize]], and subsequently served as a model for history students, noted in particular for its use of oral history techniques.

He earned an M.Phil. in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from St. Antony's College, [[Oxford]], in 2008, and returned to Columbia to pursue his [[Ph.D.]] in International and Global History. A Wexner Graduate Fellow in Jewish Studies, Seth focuses on the Arab-Israeli conflict, U.S. foreign relations, and modern Jewish history. During the summer of 2009, he was an NSEP Boren Fellow in Beirut, Lebanon, conducting pre-dissertation research on American intervention in the Middle East during the late Cold War.
