Professor of Germanic languages and chairman of the department at Columbia, joined Columbia in 1959 and remained teaching until his untimely death, in 1983, at the age of 51. He was also the director of Deutsches Haus. In 1976, he received the Mark Van Doren Award, given annually by the university students. He was usually seen around campus in a finely tailored suit and tie. He endeared himself to his students with his charm and love of knowledge.
