See also Wikipedia's article about "Biosphere 2".

Biosphere 2 is an artificially-enclosed ecosystem in Oracle, Arizona. From 1995 to 2003 the site was managed by Columbia. During this time, Columbia students could "study abroad" at the Biosphere. The end of the university's affiliation with the Biosphere was widely lamented on campus.
