The Nicholas Murray Butler Medals are currently awarded every five years to individuals anywhere in the world who have made a distinguished contribution in philosophy or educational theory, practice or administration. The award has been administered since 1915, and was given out somewhat more frequently in previous years. The medals are either Gold, Silver, or Bronze.
They are named for domineering former University President Nicholas Murray Butler.
