David I. Hirsh was the Executive Vice President for Research. He took up the position in 2003 but resigned on July 9, 2010, following the Kreitschman PET Center scandal. He is remaining in his position until a successor is found.

Hirsh also has appointments in the Faculty of Medicine, where he served as interim dean for research 2000 to 2001, and is Robert Wood Johnson, Jr. Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, which he chaired from 1990 to 2003.

Prior to Columbia he served as Executive Vice President and Director of Research at Synergen, Inc., and held an academic appointment at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Hirsh is a member of the boards of Rockefeller University and the Agouron Institute, is a director of Zymogenetics, Inc., and serves on the International Advisory Council of the Singapore Economic Development Board. He received his B.A. from Reed College and his Ph.D. from Rockefeller University in 1968.
