Edward Saphir CC 1904 MA 1905 PhD 1909 was a reknown linguist. At Columbia, he studied for his BA and MA in German, but he switched to anthropology after realizing his linguistic interests were broader. Anthro don Franz Boas, who had brought linguistics under the purview of his department at that time, proved an influential mentor to him.
