James Renwick CC 1807 was a scientist and valedictorian of his Columbia class. From 1820 to 1854 he served as a professor of physics and chemistry at Columbia. In between, he surveyed the Canadian border and wrote biographies, including one of DeWitt Clinton.

His son, James Renwick, Jr., also attended Columbia, and became an architect.
