Jim Jarmusch CC '75 is a famous independent filmmaker. He transferred to Columbia from Northwestern University's undergraduate journalism school, where he reportedly ignored all journalism classes in favor of literature and art history. At Columbia, he studied under poets Kenneth Koch and David Shapiro and edited the Columbia Review and Upstart. He spent much of his final semester studying abroad in Paris before returning to enroll in NYU's graduate film program.
