John Dewey

John Dewey was an influential philosopher and educator. He taught and researched in several branches of the University from 1904 to 1930, but is perhaps most well known for his work at Teachers College.

Among his notable students were Mortimer Adler and B.R. Ambedkar. One of Dewey's most notable later detractors, Randolph Bourne, was also among his students when he was at Columbia.

In 1935, he was awarded the Butler Medal at Commencement.

A plaque on the building that is home to Tom's Restaurant commemorates the period when Dewey lived there.
