Mark Modesitt, CC '10, is a Political Science and Spanish major. He was president of the Class of 2010 Council for the 2006-07 academic year, but is more widely known for his involvement in a "hate speech" incident that took place in March 2007.

On Monday March 5th, 2007, a threat was written in permanent marker on the door of Modesitt's John Jay floor 8 single.[1] The threat read "Mark is racist, I'll kill you." Modesitt notified Public Safety, naming at least four first year students. Public Safety then launched an investigation, sending an email to each implicated student.

The residents of Modesitt's floor were made to attend a mandatory meeting about "hate speech", held by floor 8 Resident Adviser Alex Topkins. Modesitt's door was sanded down soon after the incident.

Mark Modesitt is a Columbia College student. He is best known as the first-year president of the class of 2010. Mark is now a member of the class of 2011 after taking a medical leave from Columbia from 2007-2008.

During his tenure as class president, he received death threats from a fellow Columbia student. This event elicited much attention from the Columbia community, especially after some students under investigation for making the threats launched a hate campaign against him.

After returning to Columbia in the Fall of 2008, Mark desisted from involvements at Columbia and began a career in men's fashion with jobs at GQ Magazine and Grown & Sewn, a men's collection.
