The New Student Orientation Program takes up your first week at Columbia. There are no classes, but lots of events. Some of them are "mandatory." None of them really are—NSOP is the last week you're treated like high school students, i.e. as if you really had to be anywhere. Because of the, ahem, extracurricular passtimes of NSOP prefrosh, the week is also known as NSLOP, as in, "We got NSLOPPY last night."

NSOP once included an event called "CUnity," which involved rotating small social circles and theoretically meeting lots of people. After the organizers realized no one really made lasting friendships this way, it was eschewed.
