Paul Anderer is a professor of Japanese and comparative literature.

He was born on April 16, 1949 in Philadelphia, and was educated at St. Joseph's Preparatory School (1967), the University of Michigan (B.A. '71), the University of Chicago (M.A. '72), and Yale (Ph.D. '79). He taught at Notre Dame before joining the Columbia faculty in 1980.

He is the author of Other Worlds: Arishima Takeo and the Bounds of Modern Japanese Fiction (Columbia U. Press, 1984), and Literature of the Lost Home: Kobayashi Hideo-- Literary Criticism, 1924-1939 (Stanford U. Press, 1995; paperback edition, 1999).
