He has served the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures as its Chair (1989-97), and the University as Acting Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, as Director of the Keene Center of Japanese Culture, as Assoc, VP for Academic Planning and Global Initiatives, and as Vice Provost for International Relations.  He is married to Mia Takehita Anderer.
