Philippe Reines is Deputy Assistant Secretary of State. He transferred to the School of General Studies from a night school in Boston, and earned his B.A. in political science when he was 30. He then applied to the Journalism School, the Peace Corps, and the FBI, but eventually decided to work on Al Gore's ill-fated presidential campaign. After working as Gore's assistant while the former VP was teaching at the J-School, Reines took a series of political jobs, eventually working on Hillary Clinton's 2008 primary, which was his route into the State Department.

In 2009, he was selected as General Studies' Class Day speaker.
