Samuel Johnson was the first president of King's College. He was originally a minister from Connecticut, and attended Yale.

Johnson helped popularize George Berkeley's philosophy in British North America. The Columbia Engineering Alumni Association awards the Samuel Johnson Medal for Distinguished Professional Achievement in his honor.
