Tess Majors (BC '23) was an 18 year old Barnard freshman who was killed in a fatal stabbing on the evening of December 11, 2019 in Morningside Park. The suspects were several teenaged boys, who were attempting to rob Tess, and stabbed Tess several times in the chest when they resisted. The suspects then fled, while Tess staggered up the stairs and collapsed at the corner of Morningside Drive and 116th Street, in front of an empty guard booth. Tess was later found and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were pronounced dead at 7:23 pm. One 13 year old boy was convicted of first degree robbery, and charges for 2nd degree murder are still pending for him and two 14 year old boys.

Tess was from Waynesboro, Virginia, and graduated from St. Anne's-Belfield School in May 2019. Tess sang and played bass in their band, Patient 0, which had recently released an album. Tess also led the creative writing club in high school, ran cross-country, and volunteered on political campaigns. An intern at the Augusta Free Press during the spring of 2019, Tess had an interest in journalism and planned to study journalism at Barnard.
