The University Statutes are the governing documents of the university. The Statutes are laid out by the Board of Trustees and govern the highest level of the university administration, including officially establishing each of Columbia's faculties and governing the relationship between them (such as the Columbia-Barnard relationship).

The Statutes also establishes the official roles of university officials, such as the University president and Provost. They also officially establish the University Senate and the Student Governing Board (SGB), though the purpose of the SGB has changed since its original creation in the Statutes.
