Columbia's Philosophy Department was established as a graduate faculty in 1890, and characterized by an unlikely equilibrium between analytical and continental philosophers.

It is located, appropriately enough, at the top of Philosophy Hall, "above everything else, which is as it should be," according to Professor Lydia Goehr.
