1917 in Columbia history:

  • With the entry of the United States into World War One, student soldiers begin drilling on South Field
  • After Columbia is commissioned to do so by the US government, Frederick J. E. Woodbridge designs a "war issues" course for student soldiers; this will lead to the eventual establishment of Contemporary Civilization
