Marcellus Hartley Dodge CC 1903 was a trustee and major benefactor of the university. He was the heir of Remington Arms Manufacturing. He probably set the bar for senior fund giving when he donated $350,000 for the construction of Hartley Hall on his graduation.

His family had previously donated Earl Hall, and his family and estate underwrote the Dodge Physical Fitness Center. Columbia named the previously unnamed Dodge Hall in his honor in 1965 after his death.
