Melvil Dewey put the Dewey in the Dewey Decimal System. He was also Columbia's chief librarian from 1883 to 1888, and personally arranged Columbia's card catalogs according to his system (located in Butler 310, they're slated to be removed permanently by 2014).

He is also credited with being the founder of the now-defunct School of Library Economy, later the School of Library Service.
