Brian Greene is a professor in the Math Department who is famous for his research on String theory. He wrote The Elegant Universe and has appeared in many a crappy PBS special.

String theory may be utter rubbish, but since the university's reputation rises with Brian Greene, praise him anyway. Or not: Greene's chief critic, Peter Woit, is on the Columbia math faculty too!
