Justus Buchler PhD '38 was a Columbia philosopher. After earning his doctorate with a dissertation on "Charles Peirce's Empiricism," he became an instructor in 1939, an associate professor in 1950, and a full professor in 1956. During the 1950-56 period he was a Core Curriculum pioneer and served as chairman of Contemporary Civilization. He was later chairman of the Philosophy Department before jumping ship to teach at SUNY Stony Brook. In 1973, he was awarded the Butler Medal.
