Mark Strand is a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet who is a former Poet Laureate of the United States. He taught at Columbia from 1969 to 1972 and again in 1980. After teaching at the university for the two previous years, Strand formally joined the faculty of the English Department in 2007, at age 73.

When it was on Wien 2, Writers House hosted hosted Strand for dinner in a tiny single with all the furniture removed.
